Sale Ring |
Our year starts with the planning and budgeting for our annual sale, which in 2007 was for the first time to be held on a Saturday separate from the normal market at Newark. There was some apprehension amongst us regarding this step but we are very lucky to be ably guided by Paul Gentry who effectively takes over all the day-to-day organisation. The sale on the 21st April resulted in 411 head being sold of which 195 were pedigree animals, bulls sold to £3000 and a heifer to £4100. A great result and our collective thanks go to Paul for all his efforts. A sale is planned for Saturday 19th April 2008 DEFRA etc permitting and all entries and buyers will be welcome.
At about this time we also launched the club website and it has been an ongoing topic at each subsequent meeting to make sure we use it to the benefit of the whole membership. An area we are still growing into but it does allow non-members to learn something of what the East Midlands is doing and you will for example be able to find out about our sale there. That’s www.limousin-eastmidlands.co.uk
May led us into a debrief of the Sale and a sorting out of the financial aspects, together with the detail of our Club outing to Chatsworth. We were very lucky to be able to join with the North West Midlands Club who were visiting at the same time to their herd competition winners. A good time was had by all who went and considering all the rain that had recently fallen, Ian and his team must have worked very hard for us. Thank you, Ian.
After the Royal Show which involved several Club members, we were into our herd competition judged this year by Martin Bull from the Bapton Herd. As I write the results are not yet known but Martin’s deliberations will be appended below. A big thank you to Martin for giving his time and effort to travel around the region which is quite spread out.
After harvest in weather which was to say the least unhelpful this year, we reconvened in October for a meeting addressed by Mike Thorne, a veterinary surgeon, who led us into a discussion on health schemes. I’m sure this is a subject we will revisit from time to time as we share in the overall Society commitment to improving the health status of the breed.
The year ends with our annual presentation evening at which Martin will reveal all regarding the herd competition and then shortly after will follow the AGM. The AGM ought to be the springboard for the coming year as we review the last twelve months of what went well, what could be improved, and set in place the initial blocks for 2008.
We hope to start the year with a discussion on feeding, at a time of high grain prices it could be challenging some of our traditional methods, moving through times of planning for the sale to the herd competition and a herd open day. An enthralling year ahead and a good time to be an East Midlands Club member.
