Club Report 2007

2007! The best thing one can say about it is that it is nearly over. It began quite well with members looking forward to improved prices and export of breeding stock etc.

At the AGM in January it was decided to give a bursary of £500 as a travel voucher to the young member with the highest score at the Royal Show stock judging, to be used towards extending their cattle knowledge abroad.

At our Monthly meetings held from January to April in the Shepherds Inn, Carlisle, we had speakers from Igenity, Schering Plough and an interesting ‘any questions’ evening with an Auctioneer, Vet, Butcher & Farmer in the hot seat.

There were large entries of good Limousin cattle at Ulverston and Carlisle primestock sales which we sponsor annually; we will also be sponsoring Wigton & Cockermouth later on in the year.

To actively encourage and interest young breeders the Club decided to hold an inaugural annual Young Handlers Calf Show, this was held at Borderway Mart in May and proved very successful. We are very grateful to sponsors Harrison & Hetherington (for the use of their premises and catalogues), Barclays Bank, Agri-Lloyd and Mobile Cattle Services (trophies & prize money). Our Judge, Archie MacGregor, Allanfauld, did an excellent job and gave us some useful advice for the future.

Winner of the under 16 Young Handlers Class was Andrew Ewing aged 13yrs.
Winner of the 16 to 28 yr class was Mark Harryman.
The champion calf was M & C Ridley’s heifer Haltcliffe Bornie.

During May we held our usual Qualifying Junior Stock Judging classes at 4 herds in our region, these being Redrock, Dentox, Beeches & Terrace. Our Senior team, Richard Ridley & Richard Livingstone, Individual Michael Norman and Juniors Amy & Gemma Slater were selected to judge at the Royal. Congratulations to our Senior team who were third and especially Michael Norman who was first overall & winner of the NWLCBA 2007 bursary. Michael used his bursary to travel to Tullamore, Eire to represent the UK mainland along with Rob Kirton & Dafydd Evans against Eire and N Ireland teams, where they won the trophy.

The month of June saw us hold a very successful open stock judging at Seaview Farm, Pennington, Ulverston by kind permisson of Mr & Mrs Alan Myerscough where large numbers attended to enjoy judging excellent stock, on a beautiful evening, a very rare occasion on what became a monsoon summer, when many later shows were abandoned due to the appalling weather and subsequent flooding to be followed later by pestilence in the form of Foot & Mouth.

FMD prevented us from holding both our Herd Competition (after we had eventually sorted out the route!) and our trip to Wales, which we had fully booked and were looking forward to.

All shows and visits were put on hold until restrictions were lifted and we were looking forward to the Westmorland Show where we were to hold the final of the Heifer and Bull Derby and then the day before the event all livestock classes were abandoned as FMD had broken out again! With permission from the Exhibitors who had entered the Heifer and Bull Derby final at the show our Judge Mr Andy Holliday agreed to judge them on farm. Champion Bull was D Stobart’s Cracrop Banjo with the Heifer Championship awarded to Stephen Illingworth’s Glenrock Bianca.

We usually hold our Dinner Dance in early November on the night before the Red Ladies Day but this year it had to be moved to the end of the month as the October Bull sales took their slot. As our Judge could not be the ‘entertainment’ we hired an amusing speaker.

At our October meeting we had an interesting and worrying lecture on Blue Tongue; yet more pestilence.

Our members served refreshments on the Society & Club stand at the very successful H&H Agri Expo event held in November, which is set to be held annually.

It is gratifying to report that the Suckler Calf Sales which we sponsor across our region (about 17 auctions) have returned a high percentage of named Limousin sired Supreme Champions this Autumn, making very good prices. Hope for the future then!

New Members welcome - just ring Helen 017683 41388 or Judy 017683 61526 to join. All welcome!
