SCARCLIFFE BULL LEADS NEWARK LIMOUSIN TRADE AT 6,500gns
100% clearance of 496 Lots
Sale grosses £568,000
Bulls average £4,600
Cows in calf/with calf at foot average £2988
Served heifers average £2482
Maiden heifers average £1909
A 100% clearance of 496 pedigree and commercial Limousin cattle was seen at Newark
Livestock Market’s fifth Annual Limousin Day on Saturday 18th April 2009.
Held on behalf of the East Midland Limousin Cattle Breeders Club and the North
West Midlands and North Wales Limousin Cattle Club, trade was buoyant with bulls
averaging £4,600 and females selling to a top of 4,500gns with maiden heifers
to 3,200gns.
With cattle prices at an all time high and the Limousin breed sailing on a crest
of a wave, interest was always going to be good, however no-one anticipated the
record levels that would be seen at Newark on Saturday. The alleys were heaving
with prospective purchasers and as the Sale commenced the ring was packed with
the largest crowd ever seen in Newark.

| Scarcliffe Cracker |
Leading the sale were Newark regulars Ian Wildgoose & Family, Scarcliffe,
Chesterfield with the 6,500gns Scarcliffe Cracker, a November 2007 son of French
bred AI bull Objat and out of the homebred Scarcliffe Victoria, a Jockey daughter.
Snapping up this shapely bull at 6,500gns were Messrs L Bamforth & Sons,
Hoyle Bottom Farm, Wainstalls, Halifax who run the Waindale pedigree
herd.
Enjoying a good day’s trade were local breeders, Barry, Gill & Matthew
Heald whose Coachhouse Herd had an outstanding consignment of 3 bulls and 12
heifers which produced both Male Champion & Reserve Male Champion under the
pre-sale Show Judge Miss Louise Todd, East Torrington, Lincolnshire. At the point
of Sale, it was the Reserve Champion, Coachhouse Casper, taking the day’s
second highest price, selling at 6,000gns. This February 2007 born
son of homebred sire Coachhouse Virgil, a Fedneyhouse Nelson son,
and out of the Haltcliffe Picasso-sired Coachhouse Vivian was purchased
by Andrew and Tom Armett, West Leake, Loughborough.
Next up was Coachhouise Constable - born May 2007 – another by the Healds’ herd
sire, Haltcliffe Picasso, and out of a Hydesville Delta dam. Constable was purchased
at 5,000gns by Tony Randall for use in his Melbourne Herd. Completing the Heald
Three was Coachhouse Busby, a powerful December 2006 born son of the renowned
Sympa and out of a Picasso daughter when going under the hammer for 4,700gns
to Mr EA Hull, Southminster, Essex. In all, the Healds’ three bulls averaged
a terrific £5,495.
Next best was from Roger Hazard and Sons, Lincs with the rising 15 month old
Limousin bull, Mereside Dallas, sired by senior herd sire Vagabond and out of
the imported cow Unique. The youngest bull catalogued, he sold to primestock
producer Richard Ellis, Cubbington, Warwickshire at 4,500gns.
Overall 12 bulls met a 100% clearance and averaged a very respectable £4600.91
Newark’s reputation for Pedigree females grows year-on-year and attracts
a tremendous entry from breeders from across the region. Auctioneer Paul Gentry
commented: “The sale of females was again the best seen and 4,500gns was
achieved three times with the first of these consigned by a new vendor to Newark:
Nigel Matthews of Pye Brook Farm, Sutton, Stanton Lacy, Ludlow, Shropshire when
selling five cows with calves at foot to average £3360.”
Mr Matthews’ topper was the 7 year old Jencralodge Topaz bred by Malcolm
Smith, Stoke on Trent and sired by Gaulois out of the impeccably bred Jencralodge
Hope (Osiris X Uplands Carmine) and with a tremendous Tunnelby Scallywag bull
calf at foot and PD’d 6 months in calf to Haltcliffe Ben. Buyers
at 4,500gns were Meadowell Farm, Bakewell, Derbyshire.
Next at the same money was Peter and Ian Pitcher who sold Cockleshell
Vicky (January 2004) by the famous Jockey and out of the Pitchers’ former
show cow, Cockleshell Madonna. Sold with a Winnington Trumps-sired
December 2008 born bull calf at foot and in calf again, purchaser
this time was Judith Fountaine, Buckinghamshire.
The third 4,500gns price tag was achieved by Stephen and Heather Timms
with their home bred in-calf heifer Roseycombe Betty. Sired by Lasso,
this September 2006 daughter of the Jockey-sired Rosecombe Tamarin
sold to John Carroll, Somerset."
Millington Grange Estate sold TOWTHORPE ULARA (December 2003) by RIO and out
of the GRIZZLI sired LARA with a very smart January born SOLEIL heifer calf at
foot. Buying at 3800gns was top suckled calf producer Frank Page, Northamptonshire.
Millington was straight back into the action this time selling MILLINGTON ALI
(September 2005) sired by WOODHOUSE PRINCE and out of the GREENSONS GIGOLO sired
BROCKHURST NELLIE sold with a December born MILLINGTON VELOX sired bull calf
at foot. Buying at 3,600gns was Mr RM Hardy, Cauldon Low, Stoke-on-Trent.
Other senior females selling at 3,600gns was Nigel Matthews JENCRA LODGE TAMMY
to Meadowell Farms and at 3,500gns Millington Grange sold TAPINEUSE to Mr PJ
Dale, Ripley, Derbyshire.
In calf heifers from Peter and Ian Pitcher sold to 3,200gns for COCKLESHELL CONNIE
selling to volume buyer John Crofts who is establishing a new herd at Gamston,
Nottingham. The Pitchers also sold COCKLESHELL BAMBI at 3,000gns to Mr DC Wharton,
Harleston, Norfolk.
Messrs Heald’s COACH HOUSE consignment of 12 maiden heifers sold to 2800gns
for COACHHOUSE CLARA by Junior Herd sire BAILEA ULSTERMAN and out of the HALTCLIFFE
PICASSO sired COACHHOUSE TILLY purchaser this time was Robert Hutchinson, Newark.
The COACHHOUSE consignment averaged £2,222.50.
Helen Burton sold REMPSTONE CLARABELL at 2,700gns to John Carroll,
Somerset. Breed Society Chairman Jim Bloom sold his consignment of
15 maiden heifers to 2,500gns and averaged £2044. Completing
the Pedigree section of the catalogue was a consignment of embryos
from CLASSIC LIMOUSIN, Leics, the past Royal Show winner NEWSTART
UPSYDAISY being the dam and with HALTCLIFFE VERMOUNT or WAINDALE UFO
the sire. After much interest, the egg was sold at 1,000gns to Mr
D Wright, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.
Leading the Commercial section of the catalogue, Messrs Smiths of
Bloxham, Banbury sold a consignment of crossbred cows with calves
at foot to £2200 with
others at £2100 twice. Messrs WN & RR Shirley, Rugby, Warwickshire
sold three pure (non registered) 2 year old heifers 12 weeks in calf at £1600.
Ian Brown sold two Limousin 8 and 10 month old Limousin bulls at £930.
Messrs Scott and Scott (Ayston) Ltd sold 14 month old steers to £980 and
averaged £870.90 for 11 heifers sold to £870 and averaged £747.80
for 41.
John and Denise Davies, Rugby sold 11 month old Limousin heifers
to £1150 and 13 month old steers to £1000. Messrs L Bamforth,
Halifax sold 76 pure Limousin bulls and heifers 8-12 months old. Bulls
sold to £1300.00 and heifers £1420.00 with the consignment
averaging £746.32.
Messrs Foster and Copley sold Limousin Cross South Devon steers and heifers (13-14 months) to £960 and £910 respectively. Joe Gilbert, Coventry sold Limousin steers 10-14 months to £1000 and averaged £932.50. Jack Codd sold Limousin Cross bulls (12 months) to £755.00 and heifers to £790.00. William Timm had Champion Cross bred with a11 month old Limousin steer and sold to £1600.00.
Messrs DJ and M Hull, Southminster, Essex sold 47 Limousin heifers 10-16 month old to £940.00 with others at £900, £900, £900 and £870 three times.
Mark Whitlock, Coventry sold 33 steers and heifers all 11 months
old to £860 for steers and £890 for heifers.
Another excellent result at the Midlands’ leading Livestock
Centre and with particular thanks to sponsor Mr Les Wilson-Sponsor,
judge Miss Louise Todd and to the stewarding team led by Mick Hardy.
Club Report 2008
In short, another busy and satisfying year for the Club; great support
for all the events in the Club’s calendar, an encouraging year
for the Young Breeders and plenty of success in the sale and show rings
for our members.
Our recent presentation dinner dance perhaps demonstrates the best
of this Club. Members old and new, family & friends came to hear
the results of the Herd Competition, all enjoying a very sociable evening
at the Royal Oak Hotel, Welshpool. In announcing the results, our judge,
Peter Henshall, complimented all the entrants on the quality of their
cattle. In fact, with so many good entries in the Young Bull class,
it had been necessary to split the class by age to do them justice.
The results speak for themselves - real depth in the quality of cattle
in our region. The award of the Overall Herd Championship to the Twemlows
herd of Will & Jackie Forrester is, therefore, a real ‘feather
in the cap.’
Equally enjoyable was the Club visit in late September to herds in
the South West. The sun shone throughout the weekend – a very
rare occurrence this year, allowing the Nealford, Killerton, Rosecroft,
Columbpark and Loosebeare herds to show us their excellent cattle and
the scenery of the area at its best.
Our Young Breeders – well supported and encouraged by Sarah Kirton
- are a credit to the Club. At the Royal Show, the Senior and Junior
teams were each placed 2nd. Matthew Wright was placed 2nd as an Individual
and then went on join the GB team in the Anglo-Irish Young Limousin
Breeders’ Stockjudging Competition held at Moira, N Ireland.
During the summer, the Dweliog and Pyebrook Herds held successful open
and stock judging afternoons. The winners of the Overall Herd Championship
last year - the Dolcorsllwyn herd - also had a tremendous turnout at
their Open Day in early August. In June, the opportunity to join the
East Midlands Club on a visit to the Fieldson herd proved very worthwhile.
Due all the difficulties with Blue Tongue restrictions, it was not
surprising that holding Club sales caused some headaches this year.
However, prices for bulls of up to £5,200 were achieved with
an average of £2,250 at Ruthin, and the two Welshpool sales averaged £2,500
(spring) and £2,750 (autumn). To provide a Club sale for members
in the Surveillance Zone, it was decided to organise a sale for bulls
and females at Bakewell Auction Mart. The sale was held in early May
with encouraging support from both breeders and buyers to produce an
average of almost £2,000 for bulls. Several members also supported
the East Midlands Club Sale at Newark in April with good results, leading
to our first joint sale with the East Midlands Club at Newark on 11th
October. Whilst we are all hoping that Blue Tongue will not be such
a problem in 2009, these developments should help service members furthest
from our traditional Club sale venues.
Manning the breed stand at The English Winter Fair at Stafford resumed ‘normal
service’ in November after its cancellation last year. This year,
we had a larger ringside stand with two eye-catching bulls from the
Garnedd Herd on display. With the usual warm welcome and refreshments
provided by members, the Limousin stand was undoubtedly the meeting
place of the show. The stand was busy all weekend and we were awarded
the Best Stand in Show trophy.
We are an active, thriving and sociable club, supporting both pedigree
and commercial interests in the breed. Best wishes to all for 2009!
