Club Report 2008
Well, this year has again been a very difficult year, with movement
restrictions imposed due to the blue tongue vaccination program making
showing and trading very difficult at times.
The Club teamed up with the South West Angus Club to hold another very
successful mouse racing evening raising £350 for the Devon & Cornwall
Air Ambulance. Our thanks to Mark Bromell from Kivells for doing a
grand job of auctioning the mice and we were very pleased to make the
presentation at the Devon County Show.
We held our first sale this year at Holsworthy Market in April; this
was a great success with a top price of 4,000gns. At our regular summer
sale at Bristol we had a top price of 3,600gns with the blue tongue
restriction zones not helping as stock was not able to move into Wales.
The Club feel these two sales should work well together to cater for
the whole region.
Most of the shows in the region went ahead but with significantly less
cattle and sheep entries than usual. The season kicked off at North
Somerset where Nick Hill took the Interbreed Championship with his
maiden heifer Quaish Bee with two fine lady judges in charge!
David & Anne Wheeler followed the trend at Devon County with “Rosecroft
Versace” (as in the designer) with every commentator managing
to get her name wrong! They also took the Junior Interbreed with Rosecroft
Charlie, a Grahams Unbeatable son, and Matt & I snuck in winning
the Exhibitor-bred Group of Three with Columbpark Beaujolais, Columbpark
Chunkey Monkey and Columbpark Chantilly, all sired by our stock bull
Rombalds Utah. Versace then teamed up with Goldies Trophy to take the
Pairs. What a good day! Then on the Saturday Nick and Quaish Bee were
there again, winning the Commercial Championship.
Bath and West was hit badly with the lack of entries and the weather,
with a freak storm flooding much of the showground including the Goat
tent! So it was all hands on deck to rig up some pens in the Cattle
lines (just a well the cattle numbers were down!)
The results were a repeat of Devon County really, but the Lims also
took the Col. Bill Roberts trophy for the Society Group of Four, consisting
of Rosecroft Versace, Goldies Trophy, Columbpark Beaujolais and Quaish
Bee.
Royal Cornwall. Well, what a nightmare! At the very last minute DEFRA
decided not to include Cornwall in the Blue Tongue protection zone
as there was a problem with the supply of vaccine, so it was a Cornish
Show except a few from the Midlands that could travel through Somerset
and Devon as long as they didn’t stop! (There must have been
some red lights jumped that day!)
We managed to have our Herd Competition this year and we were very
pleased to welcome Daf & Jane Griffiths to the region, well I suppose
you could call Jane a native as I believe she is Cornish born and bred!
(Clearly some of the best females come out of the South West!) I think
they had a good week and the weather wasn’t too bad.
Some of our members were very pleased to host visitors from the North
West Midlands and North Wales Club. I don’t know who chose the
dates, but they couldn’t have picked a better weekend, the weather
was glorious. I hope they all had a good weekend.
It wasn’t long before we bumped into some of them again, this
time in Ireland (are they ever at home)!! The Beef Expo was great,
and the Irish Limousin Society showed us a very warm welcome. They
had some tremendous females on show - one or two of which I believe
have come to the South West!
As I write this report the Winter Fairs are well under way (but will
be over when you read it)! Smithfield is just a couple of weeks away
and is being held again this year at The Royal Bath & West Showground.
I personally felt they did a great job in 2006, and couldn’t
do enough for us. It might not be the easiest place to get to, but
you can be sure of a very warm West County welcome when you get there!
Finally on behalf of Colin and the South West committee I would like
to wish Society members and staff a very happy and successful 2009.
