Suckler Herd Competition

Following the success of the last two competitions, the British Limousin Cattle Society is again pleased to announce that Caltech-Crystalyx will continue as principal sponsor.

With a prize fund of £5,500, the National Suckler Herd Competition will again seek highlight and reward the best commercial herds using Limousin bulls and genetics.

Play your part by entering the competition or encouraging good commercial herds that you know of to put their entry form in and have a go.

Rules & Terms of Entry

The competition is held by the British Limousin Cattle Society and has a prize fund of £5,500.

The National Suckler Herd Competition serves to highlight and reward the best commercial herds using Limousin bulls and genetics and it is hoped the BLCS and its members will be able to benefit from this further avenue of breed promotion. In the first instance, the nine respective Limousin regions conduct a competition within their own area with the winning herds going head-to-head in a National final to provide an overall winner. Competitors have the chance of taking home a £1,000 top prize and/or a share of the £500 prize fund for each of the regions.

Eligibility
Entrants must be commercial suckler herds:

  • with a minimum of 30 cows

  • running mainly with pedigree Limousin bulls

  • be available for regional judging 1-15th August and national judging 1-15th September

Judging criteria
Judges will be mainly looking at overall quality and performance including:

  • performance of Limousin-sired calves

  • suitability for market place

  • good commercial practice

  • overall management

  • relevance/appropriateness/suitability to local conditions

Regions
9 regions as defined by Society Regional Club boundaries rather than defined geographical areas:

  • North West

  • North East

  • NW Midlands & N Wales

  • South Wales & Mid West

  • East Midlands

  • South West

  • South East

  • Scotland

  • Northern Ireland

Entrants who are not members of the Society will be notified as to which area they qualify to compete in.

Rules

  • This competition is promoted by the British Limousin Cattle Society which reserves the right to amend the rules at any time

  • Regional judges to be appointed by Regional Clubs

  • National judge to be appointed by the Society

Prize fund

  • £500 per region, to be divided as seen fit by the Regional Clubs

  • £1,000 for the overall winning national herd

Timetable

  • Regional judging first two weeks in August each year

  • Final judging in September

  • Entries closed 13th July 2007

This competition is warmly welcomed by Limousin Club Chairmen & Secretaries and is viewed as a team effort between Clubs, the Society and commercial producers.
