Young Bull Promotion Scheme
April 2007
37,000gns Fieldson Alfy selected for MLC/Signet Young Bull
Promotion Scheme
Limousin bull Fieldson Alfy, owned by David Kelly, Nether Hall Farm
Ltd, Monsergh, Kirkby Lonsdale, Carnforth, Lancashire has been selected
for inclusion in the MLC/ Signet sponsored Young Bull Promotion Scheme.
The general aim of the scheme is to promote the use of genetically
superior bulls across herds within a breed.
Fieldson Alfy, bred and sold by JW Fieldson, Poplar Farm, Corringham,
Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, was purchased at Carlisle’s October
Limousin Sale for the top price of 37,000gns. A March 2005 born bull,
Fieldson Alfy was sired by Gunnerfleet Plunas, a Tunnelby Monkeytricks
son that the Fieldsons purchased from Carlisle in 2000 for 7000gns.
Out of Eden Natasha, Alfy features the prolific Broadmeadows Cannon
on both sides of his pedigree and carries an excellent Beef Value of
LM+33.
In the traits for Muscle Score and Muscle Depth respectively, Alfy
ranks in the top 1% of recorded Limousin cattle. His 400-day growth
EBV of 63 also places him easily in the breed’s top10% for that
trait.
At the time of sale, October Carlisle Show judge Brian Jones of the
noted pedigree Bailea herd, Heol Senni, Sennybridge, Brecon, had awarded
the Supreme Championship to Fieldson Alfy and was full of praise for
the bull’s qualities . “He is a terrific bull, just like
a Limousin should be. A tremendous carcase animal with a great top
and back end, he is also ultra clean. Really he had no faults and pedigree
or commercial this is a bull whose progeny should be top earners,” he
said.
The YBPS sees the selection of a promising young bull to a set criteria
and the distribution of at least 100 straws of semen, free of charge,
to at least 20 herds. All participating herds must be a member
of the Beefbreeder service operated by Signet.
The two principal aims of the scheme are; to promote rapid genetic
improvement via reduced generation intervals and improved selection
differentials and secondly, to improve the accuracy of EBVs by increasing
the connectedness (related animals) amongst herds. To be considered
for selection, bulls must ideally be in the top 1% of the breed for
both Beef Value and Calving value as calculated in the BLUP evaluations
at the time of selection. Bulls must be under 30 months old on
the date of submission and must have 200 and 400 day weights and scans
recorded to be considered.
The Society is responsible for arranging collection and distribution
of the semen. All BLCS members who are performance recording
are eligible to apply for an allocation of straws.
