LIMOUSIN CONFIDENCE CONTINUES WITH TOP PRICES AND AVERAGES

Confidence in the Limousin breed continued on a high at the first pedigree bull sale south of the border in more than 12 months at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

The British Limousin Cattle Society sale conducted by Harrison & Hetherington and attended by a capacity crowd, brought a top price of 16,000gns and another massive overall average of £3,929.06 for 100 bulls sold.

The Carlisle sale, which met an 80 per cent clearance of the bulls forward, along with the successful sale at Perth in February has seen more than 200 bulls average over £4,000.

At last February’s Carlisle sale, the last pedigree sale before the foot and mouth outbreak, 121 bulls sold to average £2,664.50 with a top price of 9,500gns.

Iain Kerr, BLCS chief executive, said: "It is great to see a sale back at Carlisle following a very tough year and this sale proves that confidence in the Limousin breed has not diminished. Among the buyers were numerous commercial producers who were willing to pay up to 8,000gns for a bull."

The judge, Ron Cruickshank, of Little Kype Farm, Strathaven, Lanarkshire, was proven right in his convictions when his supreme champion Cloughhead Radar, from Cumbrian breeder George Hutton, of Setmabanning, Threlkeld, Keswick, sold for the top price of 16,000gns.

Buyers were Steadman and Judy Dodd, of West View, Temple Sowerby, Penrith, who lost their Redrock herd, which had been established for 22 years, to foot and mouth disease last year.

The Dodds have recently re-stocked with 32 pedigree cows, in-calf heifers and bulling heifers, mainly purchased from Tom Cheshire, in Buckinghamshire, which they will increase herd numbers from. They have also bought 100 Limousin cross commercial females.

Cloughhead Radar is their first main stock bull for the new herd. "We had seen him on farm and we thought he would work with both the pedigree and commercial cattle," said Judy Dodd. "He is well muscled and has a good conformation and he has a good temperament."

The 25 month old bull is by Cloughhead Jurassic, a Broadmeadows Cannon son, whose sons have previously sold to 9,000gns, and out of Magneto.

Mr Cruickshank’s junior champion, the 20-month-old Gunnerfleet Richard bred by J Handley, Gunnerfleet Farm, Chapel le Dale, Ingleton, Lancashire, made the second top price at 12,000gns.

Buyers were David and Vicky Hill, of Rayson Hall Farm, Ousby, near Penrith, who were looking for new bloodlines for their Raysonhall 20-cow pedigree herd and in particular daughters of stock bull Haltcliffe Novel, bred by Matt and Craig Ridley and was bought for 9,000gns in 1998.

The first five of Novel’s sons averaged £5,000 last year when sold privately and the Hills are planning to build on his success and increase the numbers of pedigrees and reduce the commercial cattle. Currently 25 Limousin cross cows are run to produce year-old stores.

The Hills selected Gunnerfleet Richard on his breeding, size and conformation. His sire Tunnelby Monkeytricks was reserve champion in Carlisle in October 1997 and sold for 10,000gns, since when his sons have topped sales for the Handleys. The first maiden heifer by him made £18,000 privately in November 2001.

The third top price of 11,000gns went to the 24 month old Dyfri Riogrande, from West Wales breeders, David and Aled Edwards, who also had the top priced bull at last year’s February Carlisle sale, Dyfri Pascal, which sold for 9,500gns.

Making the bid was John Smillie, and son John, for their Smithston herd at Patna, Ayrshire.
The Smillies were attracted by the bloodlines which include top show winners. Riogrande is by the French bull, Jockey which sired Dyfri Pascal and numerous other top priced bulls, including Neutron which made 14,000gns in October 1998.

His dam is Dyfri Missouri, out of Tanhill Toujour and by Rake Denver, both top show winners. As well as his show winning bloodlines, Riogrande has a beef value of LM30 placing him in the top one per cent of the breed.

The Smillies run 65 cows in their pedigree herd and plan to use the bull on heifer daughters of Cockleshell Jarrow. Eleven of Jarrow’s sons have sold privately recently to average £4,300 to a top of £7,200.

"He was chosen mostly because of his fleshing ability as well as his bloodlines and beef value," said John Smillie senior. They also run 150 commercial Limousin cross cows.

Averages: 35 senior bulls, £3,693.14; 35 intermediate bulls, £3,805.50; 30 junior bulls, £4,348.45; overall, 100 bulls, £3,929.06.
