LIMOUSIN END OF SEASON SALE HITS 8,000GNS TOP PRICE

The Limousin breed's last pedigree bull sale of the season once again maintained a solid trade and brought a top price of 8,000gns at Harrison & Hetherington's Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Friday July 12th 2002.

The top price came for Loosebeare Ricky which, with a beef value of LM32 puts him in the top one per cent of the breed, for Arthur and Julie Brownrigg's Hesket herd at Howhill Farm, Hutton Roof, Penrith, Cumbria. It was one of 13 bulls to sell for 3,000gns and more, rounding off a terrific trade for British Limousin Cattle Society official sales as well as production, reduction and dispersal sales this year.

The 21 month old bull had caught the eye of Julie's father Alan Chapman at the sale, but he wanted to consult his daughter and son-in-law before making the purchase, and it was not until the ring was closed that the deal was made - just in time before Andrew and Mark Quick set off on their return journey to Devon with the bull.

"His figures are very good and we've got a great feeling about the bull," said Arthur Brownrigg.

The Brownriggs have been re-stocking their Hesket pedigree Limousin herd after falling victim to foot and mouth disease last April and have been building up cow numbers to 60 pedigrees. They are also aiming to run 40 commercial cross bred Limousins.

Ricky is by Greenwell Manager, bought for 9,000gns in Carlisle in October 1997, and out of Loosebeare Nayley.

Fieldson Rumpy

The top priced bid through the ring was 6,200gns for Fieldson Rumpy bred by John Fieldson, of Poplar Farm, Corringham, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, a son of Fieldson Officer which sold at the Carlisle February 2000 sale for 6,500gns.

The 20 month old bull had been the favourite for Hector Rutherford who was looking for a stock bull for his re-stocked Limousin cross commercial 60 female herd at Low Eshells, Hexhamshire, Northumberland.

His wife Jillian had her eye on another Fieldson bull, Fieldson Reflex at 21 months old, which they also secured for 3,800gns for the enterprise they run with son Roger.

The third top priced bull of the sale also went to Hexham bidders, Messrs Walton, of Greyside Farm, Fourstones. They paid 5,200gns for Gunnerfleet Runningbull, a 20 month old son of Tunnelby Monkeytricks, purchased for 10,000gns in October 1997 at Carlisle by Jim Handley, for the Gunnerfleet herd based at Chaple le Dale, Ingleton, Carnforth, Lancashire.

Two bids came at 4,000gns. The first was for an early entry in the catalogue, George Anderson's Muirhouse Reyna, bred at Netherton, Wishaw, Lanarkshire and a 27 month old son of Mereside Challenger. Purchasers were borders breeders A & AW Lammie, of Castlemains, Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire.

Also at 4,000gns was Swarland Rudolph, a grandson of Ronick Hawk, bred by A & D Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, Swarland, Morpeth, Northumberland, and bought by Messrs Paterson, Thistlebottom, Caldbeck, Wigton, Cumbria.

Three bids came at 3,800gns, including the Rutherfords' second purchase. Also at the same price was Quaish Radar from Somerset breeders Nick and Lisa Hill, an outstanding quality son of their show winning bull Laverock Nimrod.

The bull has already notched up success in the show ring, including the interbreed exhibitor group of three at the Devon County and Royal Bath and West shows this year. The purchaser was RW Nairn, Shield Hill, Lochmaben, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.

The third bull at 3,800gns was Sarkley Shannon, bred by Glyn and Liz Pennie and sons Chris and Nigel, of Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys. The successful bidder was A & MJ Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall Farm, Keswick, Cumbria.

Averages: 52 bulls, £2,524.04.
