10,000GNS TIMES FOUR FOR LIMOUSIN BULLS AT CARLISLE

Four bulls topped the British Limousin Cattle Society autumn show and sale at 10,000gns at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Saturday October 19th 2002, with a total of 18 bulls selling at 5,000gns and more.

The sale's overall average for 122 bulls sold was £3,190.31. At the previous autumn sale held in Carlisle in October 2000 the overall average for 102 bulls was £2,805.15.

A good show of Limousin bulls reflected the depth of breeding quality in the catalogue for the sale conducted by Harrison & Hetherington. Buyers were selective in picking out the good bulls and trade was also influenced by the evident swing towards spring calving.

First through the ring to sell at 10,000gns was the senior and reserve supreme champion from Steven Priestley, of Hilltop Farm, Denholme, Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Brontemoor Stantheman

Stantheman had been selected reserve supreme champion by the judge Richard Bartle, of Shifnal, Shropshire, at the previous day's show. The bull was also in the winning Carlisle Three group sponsored by Stanford Livestock, of Wiltshire, for Mr Priestley along with Brontemoor Sting and Brontemoor Sparrowhawk, rounding off a great show and sale for the Brontemoor herd.

Buyers were Geraint and Hugh Owen, of Sandilands Farm, Tywyn, Gwynedd, who intend to use the bull mainly on their 100 cow pedigree Vaenol herd but may also use him to produce potential show calves from their 100 suckler cows.

"We liked his qualities, particularly his hind quarters and he is a very well balanced bull. His high beef value of LM29 was also a factor," said Geraint Owen.

Mr Priestley sold another bull from his winning group of three, Brontemoor Sting for 7,000gns to Buriton Estates, Petersfield, Hampshire. Farm manager John Reynolds had picked out the bull as his choice from the catalogue on his length and his successful brothers sired by Haltcliffe Olympus for the estate's Miscombe herd of 50 pedigree cows.

Kype Suburu
Kype Subaru 10,000gns

A bull which had attracted much interest before it went through the ring to sell at 10,000gns was the 19 month old Kype Subaru, from Ron Cruickshank, of Little Kype Farm, Strathaven, Lanarkshire.

It was commercial cattle producers Michael and Robert Scott, of Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead, Carlisle, who picked the Cloughhead Lord son on his conformation for their 370-cow suckler herd.
Their predominantly Limousin cross herd is all run with Limousin bulls with Subaru joining the other seven pedigree Limousin stock bulls.

Having his best sale yet was Limousin breeder and butcher Jimmy Mulholland of Great Orton, near Carlisle. His 18 month old bull Liscon Striker sold to Alan Harrison and son William, of Aspatria, Carlisle, for 10,000gns, Jimmy's best price for a bull from his pedigree herd established four years ago.

Liscon Striker

Striker is by Greenwell Ludo, bought from the Nattresses as supreme champion in 1997 which also sired Mr Mulholland's May 7,500gns bull at Carlisle this year. Striker's dam was bought at a heifer for the Liscon herd which numbers 15 pedigree cows.

The Harrisons re-stocked their holding near Wigton in the spring with 100 pedigree cows from the Creedy herd based in Devon, when previously they had run only commercial cattle. Striker is the second stock bull for the herd and William Harrison liked his thickness and bone.

At the end of the sale David Baillie, of Calla, Carnwath, Lanark, paid the fourth cheque for 10,000gns for Richard and Paul Byas's Middledale Scoobydoo, from their herd at Kilham, Driffield, East Yorkshire.

The father and son team believed that the bull was one of the best they had bred at Middledale and with a beef value of 36, placing him in the top one per cent of the breed, he was 169kg above breed average on sale day. Scoobydoo is by Sarkley Jonathon whose sons have sold well.

The next highest price at 8,800gns was the 18 month old Ronick Shapely from David Dick, of Mains of Throsk, Stirling. Buyers were Drew and Bob Adam, of Newhouse of Glamis, Glamis, Forfar, Angus for the son of Ronick Nucleus out of Ronick Hainsi which was full sister to Ronick Gains and Ronick McAinsi which sold for 28,000gns at the Carlisle Red Ladies sale in November 1997.

Loosebeare Superman

Making 8,200gns was the supreme champion, Loosebeare Superman shown by brothers Andrew and Mark Quick, of Loosebeare Manor, Zeal Monachorum, Crediton, Devon. By Greenwell Manager, the 17 month old bull has a high beef value of 31 and sold to Doug Mash for his herd at Torrington Farm, Grove Lane, Chesham, Bucks.

The Quicks, in turn, bought Jim Mulholland's second bull for 7,000gns to run with their 60-plus herd of pedigree Limousins, selecting him for his cleanness and muscling. They run a total of 220 cows including commercial cattle.

John and Heather Phillips first sale in Carlisle netted them a 7,600gns price tag for Gronw Scott, their April 2001 born son of Dyfri Omar with an exceptional beef value of LM42 from their herd at Esgerddeugoed, Cwmfelin-Mynach, Whitland, Carmarthen.

Scott was also in the reserve place Carlisle Three group of bulls at the previous day's show and he was knocked down to Martin Bull, manager for Bapton Estates, which runs 25 pedigree Limousins in its Bapton herd at Warminster, Wiltshire.

Mr Bull chose Scott on his figures as well as his conformation describing him as "a long, stretchy bull". A 20 month old bull from the Bapton herd, Bapton Supersonic, by Grange Linaria, has recently joined the Genus AI stud.

Making 6,000gns was Terrace Sarkey shown by Ian Armstrong, of Terrace Farm, Lorton, Cockermouth, Cumbria. The 15 month old bull was by the home-bred sire Terrace Mickey, by Goldies Gigolo and out of Terrace Melinda. The bull sold to J Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Farm, Ratlinghope, Pontesbury, Shropshire.

Averages: 35 senior bulls, £3,043 (£2,474 for 24 sold in 2000); 48 intermediate bulls, £2,934.53 (£2,962 for 44 sold in 2000); 39 junior bulls, £3,637.31 (£2,835 for 34 sold in 2000); overall 122 bulls, £3,190.31 (£2,805 for 102 sold in 2000).
