The 64 head which comprised 54 pedigree cows and heifers and 11 crossbred heifers, met a total clearance at the sale conducted by Harrison & Hetherington.

A total of 13 lots made 3,000gns and more with five topping 4,000gns for females from a wide base of families across the herd at Saltby Heath Farm, Skillington, Grantham, which was established in 1983 with bloodlines from the Grange, Uplands, Broadmeadows, Tanhill and Lumbylaw herds.

The pedigree females averaged £2,520.97 and peaked at 6,800gns for Mereside Petticoat the three year old cow with her three month old bull calf Mereside Terry at foot, a son of Dyfri Orator son which was bought at the Carlisle February 2000 sale where he was reserve supreme champion.

Petticoat, from French bloodlines sired by Imprudent, purchased at Lanaud in 1994 which has made a big contribution to the herd, and out of Ginette, has run with Lascar. She sold to Smiths of Bloxham, at Newlands Farm, Bloxham, Banbury, Oxfordshire.

Lascar was purchased in France in 1999 from Domaine de Pompadour, the national herd.
One of six lots over 3,000gns to sell to Alan Jenkinson, of Clifton Moor Farm, Clifton, Penrith, Cumbria, was the second top priced animal at 5,200gns, Mereside Perry. A granddaughter of Broadmeadows Cannon, the January 1999 born Perry was with her six month old heifer calf at foot, Mereside Shelly, sired by Lascar.

Mr Jenkinson also bought the proven brood cow Mereside Furycine. The 12 year old, which sold for the fourth top price of the sale, has produced eight calves and was sold scanned in calf to Lascar. The upstanding cow is full sister to the show winning bull Mereside Bevan and is sired by the Favori son Oakley Oscar.

Mr Jenkinson paid 3,700gns twice for the four year old Wheatsheaf Laird daughter Mereside Ontar with her heifer calf Mereside Treasure at foot, and for the four year old Mereside Obadiah with her March-born bull calf Mereside Tobago at foot.

RA Walker, of Elm Tree, Asby, Appleby, Cumbria, paid the sale’s third top price of 4,500gns for the three year old Mereside Ormulu with her heifer calf Mereside Tracy, another Lascar calf, at foot.

Mereside Lewisia, at 3,800gns, joins the herd at Lower Griseburn, Great Asby, Appleby, Cumbria, for Andrew and Helen Horn. The seven year old milky cow, again sired by Imprudent and out of Mereside Hebe, was sold suckling her sixth calf, the heifer Mereside Tessa, another daughter of Lascar.

Averages: 54 cows and heifers served and/or suckling £2,520.97;
11 cross-bred cows with calves and maiden heifers £591.81. Total clearance.
