AVERAGES UP AND 6,200GNS TOP FOR LIMOUSIN RED LADIES

There were plenty of ready bids, particularly for the younger females, at the annual British Limousin Cattle Society Red Ladies Derby at Borderway, Carlisle on Friday November 8th 2002, which resulted in a top price of 6,200gns and an increased average of more than £300 on the previous sale in 2000.

The sale conducted by Harrison & Hetherington maintained the strong trade for pedigree Limousin females which has been evident throughout the year and it provided one of the best shows of females seen at this fixture in recent years.

The sale resulted in a virtual total clearance with 50 of the 54 females sold.

Topping the sale at 6,200gns was the heifer Millington Randy which Millington Grange Estate, of Millington, near York, had consigned to the sale, giving all the proceeds to the BLCS young members’ arm, the Young Limousin Breeders.

Appropriately, it was a young Limousin breeder who paid the top price for the 2.5 year old in-calf heifer.

Seventeen-year-old Alex Ibbs, from Stoke-on-Trent was not only impressed by the heifer’s looks but also by her high beef value of LM32 and tremendous growth rates with a 400-day weight of 60kg above breed average.

“I wanted to contribute to my society and put a bit into the funds for these young breeders who want to farm,” said Alex.

He founded his Lolinger herd four years ago and only at the last sale in Carlisle, the society autumn bull sale, he fulfilled his ambition to sell a bull for good money at the centre when Ednaston Socrates made 4,000gns.

Millington Randy was sold in calf to the October 1999 Perth show and sale champion Redpaths Optic which was purchased for Millington Grange for 9,000gns. By Ryedale Lusty out of Newsham Mandy, the heifer joins the Lolinger herd’s six other pedigree cows.

Randy was in the winning regional club team for the North East Limousin Breeders Club along with the 34 month old Rombalds Rosie and 2.5 year old Rombalds Rolo, from Geoff Rowson, of Goose Farm, Sutton on Forest, York.

Rolo, a daughter of Ronick Iceman, sold for 2,600gns while the Redpaths Jaguar sired Rosie made 1,600gns.

The proceeds from the sale of Millington Randy will be used in various Young Breeders activities for 2003 which include a national stockjudging competition held at the Royal Show, cultural exchanges and a calf show at the Birmingham Primestock Show.

The pre-sale judge Margaret Penny, of Shannas, Mintlaw, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, was proven right in her conviction in selecting her champion which sold for the joint second top price of the sale at 4,500gns.

Westhall Royal, a 19 month old heifer from Alan Fotheringham, of Forgadenny, Perth, had also caught the eye of John Kingan, of New Abbey, near Dumfries in south west Scotland, when he first saw her exhibited at this year’s Royal Highland Show.

The Haltcliffe Novel sired heifer out of Haltcliffe Oldgirl makes the 15th pedigree female for Mr Kingan’s Laneside herd which he is establishing in re-stocking after foot and mouth.

“Previously I had Piemontese cattle but I had always fancied the Limousin and this has given me a great chance to get into the breed,” he said. The heifer’s conformation and character attracted him.

Also selling at 4,500gns with her heifer calf at foot very early in the catalogue was the 11 year old cow Staveley Irene for William Bedell, of Newadd Isaf, Penybont, Llandrindod Wells, Powys.

The bid of 2,500gns came over the telephone from Smiths of Bloxham who had seen the outfit on the evening before the show and sale. They paid 2,000gns for Irene’s seventh calf which has show prospects.

The January 2002 born Staveley Tigra is the first daughter of Opera to be sold since foot and mouth. William Bedell has just clinched a deal for sales of Opera semen in Australia

Staveley Irene was offered for sale due to the Staveley herd reducing numbers to four heifers, which includes one of her daughters. She is the best daughter of Djerk bred at Staveley and is an excellent brood cow.

Alan Jenkinson and farm manager Iain Scott, who had been underbidders on the top priced heifer, paid the sale’s third highest price of 4,100gns for the 18 month old Newstart Shelley, one of three in the first consignment of females from David and Mary Cormack’s herd which they have now based near Thirsk.

The Cormacks currently run 35 cows on the 65 acre holding they moved to in May this year to run their pedigree Limousin herd which they aim to build up to between 50 and 60 cows alongside a new livery service producing breeders’ cattle for the show and sale ring.

Newstart Shelley was reserve champion at Stokesley Show and she was winner of the North East Limousin Breeders Club Heifer Derby championship in 2002. She is by Fenrose Orly out of SarkleyNellie which was Red Ladies champion in 1999 and purchased for 9,000gns.

Two other females topped 3,000gns. The 19 month old Cheadlewood Sabrina from Milton Schofield, of Cheadlewood Farm, Cheadle, Cheshire soild for 3,300gns to J Taggart, Glashen Farm, Ballasalla, Isle of Man. By the French sire Imposant, she is out of Cheadlewood Odelia.

At 3,100gns was the four year old cow Tydewi Olivia from WJ Williams, of Ty Delvi, Llanasa Road, Gronant, Prestatyn, Clwyd. The Ronick Hawk sired cow with her second calf at foot, the May born bull Tydewi Tex by Genus Habitus, sold to R Chadwick, Cronk Breck Farm, Greeba, Isle of Man.
