sale dates / sale reports / carlisle 13th november 2002SECOND WEANED CALF SALE DRAWS TREMENDOUS HEIFER TRADEPedigree Limousin heifers met a very strong trade at the British Limousin Cattle Societys annual weaned calf sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Wednesday November 13th 2002. The sale was only the second staged by the BLCS, the previous being in the autumn of 2000. At this years event 18 bull calves averaged £862.75 with 19 heifer calves averaging £922.89.
Topping the sale at 2,200gns making a successful day for Lanarkshire breeder Ron Cruickshank and his wife Aileen was an eight month old heifer Kype Tapestry which sold to AJ Mason, of Oddacres Farm, Embsay, Skipton. Close behind at 2,100gns was Stuart Neale, from Northern Ireland who topped the bull calf section with a first consignment from his herd, the 10 month old bull calf, Saulbrae Tory. The leading priced heifer is by Cloughhead Lord and
her dam Kype Irma is from a good bull-producing line in the Cruickshanks
50-cow herd which they run with sons Dean and Keith. Tapestry is full
sister to Kype Subaru which sold at the Carlisle autumn bull sale in
October for the shared top price of 10,000gns. Four other daughters of Cloughhead Lord sold to a top price of 1,800gns for Kype Tina, an eight month old daughter of Kype Jay. Purchaser was Gary Ibbs, of Holly House, Forsbrook, Stoke on Trent, as an early Christmas present for his 11 year old daughter Laura. The heifer will be run alongside the small pedigree Lolinger herd founded by Lauras elder brother, Alex, aged 17. He bought the top priced animal, the 2 1/2 year old heifer Millington Randy at 6,200gns at the Red Ladies Derby in Carlisle five days earlier, the proceeds of its sale going to the Limousin Young Breeders movement donated by breeders Millington Grange Estate, of York. Laura intends to compete alongside Alex at shows.Gary Ibbs said: The heifer has a good beef value at LM23 and she comes from some of the best bloodlines. I thought it would be nice to take the Kype breeding to Stoke on Trent. At 1,900gns, the second highest price in the heifer section was the 10 month old Hafodlas Tara from Alun and Glenys Roberts, of Hafod Las, Ysbytty Ifan, Betws-Y-Coed, Gwynedd, north Wales. By their successful stock bull Hafodlas Llion by Broadmeadows Cannon, the heifer is out of Hafodlas Iona, which has produced other top heifers. Buyers were Sandy Hamilton and son David, of Allanton Farming, at Darvel, Ayrshire. The purchase is the first into pedigree bloodlines for the Hamiltons who run 140 commercial cows, three quarters of which are more three quarters or seven eighths Limousin put back to pedigree Limousin bulls. They also paid 950gns for another of the Roberts Llion sired heifers, Hafodlas Trefina, aged 10 months, out of Hafodlas Nia.
It was also a worthwhile day for Stuart Neale, of
Mearn Road, Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, who sold three of the four
bulls he brought from his Saulbrae herd to make the two male calf top
prices. The three bulls sold were all calves of these heifers, with the top price selling of 2,100gns for Saulbrae Tory going to Geoff Little, of Greenhill Farm, Wigton, Cumbria. Mr Little liked the bulls conformation he has a high beef value of LM32 and he is by the French bull Geant. He is re-stocking his to previous 90 head of sucklers after foot and mouth and intends the bull will be used as a herd stock sire. Also from the Saulbrae herd at 1,400gns was Saulbrae Teak, another 10 month old bull calf, by Ronick Gains and out of Saulbrae Pamela, a good, quality cow by the herds stock bull. He sold to J & E Beckett, Rockcliffe Cross, Rockcliffe, Carlisle, Cumbria. Averages: 18 bull calves, £862.75; 19 heifer calves, £922.89. Leading prices: Heifers R Cruickshank, Little Kype
Farm, Strathaven, Lanarkshire, Kype Tapestry, 2,200gns to AJ Mason,
Oddacres Farm, Embsay, Skipton. |
