NEW BREEDERS BUY INTO ESTABLISHED BLOODLINES

The first pedigree Limousin sale of the new year, a major reduction of the noted Simbo herd at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Friday 17th January 2003 gave numerous new breeders the opportunity to buy into well-established bloodlines.

There were a number of new names to the Limousin breed in the buyer’s list as well as those who have recently established their own pedigree herds, bidding alongside breeders of long-standing for the cattle bred by Graham Simms and his son Nigel, of Hulse Farm, Lach Dennis, Northwich, Cheshire.

Volume buyer was Andy Ryder, of Newtown Farm, Annan Water, Moffat who bought 16 lots – eight cows, four bull calves, two heifer calves and a maiden heifer which made the sale’s individual top female price of 2,150gns – for the Annanwater herd.

The Ryders also paid the combined top price of 3,100gns for a cow and calf outfit going to one purchaser. Simbo Oswiss, a four and a half year old cow by Haltcliffe Flashman, sold separately for 1,800gns to the Ryders. Her second calf the July-2001-born bull calf by Jupiter sold to them for 1,300gns.

The Annanwater herd was established by Andy and his father Brian and Andy’s brother Brian two years ago and the 10 cow herd received a huge boost in numbers on Friday.

The Ryders run a large sheep enterprise and have two other small pedigree herds run alongside their 150-cow commercial suckler herd.

Andy Ryder, accompanied by stockman Ian Roberts, paid 2,150gns for Simbo Racie a two years eight month old heifer served by Foxcroft Rudi.

The heifer was sired by the French-bred bull Jupiter, a son of Dimitri, off a very strong female line, and out of Hallingbury Grace.

The cow and calf which made the highest overall combined price for an outfit at 3,200gns was, Simbo Paula, selling for 1,700gns to PRC Dean, of Kirkhouse, Brampton, Cumbria. Her heifer calf, Simbo Thea, sold for 1,500gns to Andrew Ewing, of Drumbretton, Annan, Dumfriesshire.

Paula is a daughter of Haltcliffe Flashman with a high beef value of LM27. Her yearling heifer calf is by Jupiter.

Paying the top price among the bulls at 2,600gns was IA & W Forsyth, of Monkseaton Terrace, Ashington, Northumberland for Simbo Rexie, a 34 month old bull by Sarkley Oscar out of Simbo Nellie.

David Weaver, of Endon, Stoke on Trent paid the next highest price for a male lot at 2,000gns for the stock bull, Jupiter. He bought a total of 10 lots.

Founding his Limousin herd at the sale, Eddie Sims, who works in engineering and who has 30 acres at Stockton Brook, Stoke on Trent, bought four maiden heifers and two heifer calves to run as a hobby herd.

Keen to get into pedigree breeding he took the opportunity to buy into the Simbo herd bloodlines.

His top price was 1,200gns for Simbo Stella, a 23 month old daughter of Jupiter out of Simbo Model.

Another newcomer to the Limousin breed Andrew Carr, of Redway Farm, Waterfall, Waterhouses, Stoke-on-Trent, paid 1,700gns for Simbo Solvent, one of four lots purchased. The 19 month old maiden heifer is another Jupiter daughter out of Simbo Olivet.
