LIMOUSIN PEDIGREE FEMALES SELL TO 3,300GNS

Prices for pedigree Limousin females peaked at 3,300gns in Carlisle on Thursday February 13th 2003.

Topping a small female entry in the British Limousin Cattle Society spring sale conducted by Harrison & Hetherington was the heifer Ardbrack Ruth with her first calf at foot for Mark Phillips, of Broad Oak, Ivegill, Carlisle.

Bred by Martin Gethin, of Havorfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Ruth was bought by Lowther Park Farms, Lowther, near Penrith.

She is by the 11,000gns Spage Master with her pedigree going back to Shire Cyclone and Rusee. She was sold with her four month old heifer calf, Mardoneen Tialusso by Lino.

In addition to the sale conducted by Harrison & Hetherington, a collective catalogue of females from five pedigree herds was also offered. This included the dispersal of the Briarwood herd for John and Mabel Garthwaite, of Pelton Fell, Chester-le-Street, Co Durham, started in 1992.

The highest price for the herd at 2,100gns came jointly for the in-calf cow Hydesville Penny, bought from John Powner’s Hydesville production sale in 2000, along with her bull calf Briarwood Tommy.

Penny, a quiet daughter of Hasard and a granddaughter of Gaulois, sold for 1,250gns to GD Pickering, of Thackside Farm, Goathland, Whitby, North Yorkshire, while the 13 month old Tommy was bought for 850gns by CD & WA Bland, The Flatt, How Mill, Carlisle.

Included in the collective sale was a production sale for George and Pat Long’s Millbrow herd at Skelwith Bridge, Ambleside, Cumbria, which was founded by females from Tommy and Robin Holliday’s blodlines.

Topping the Millbrow entry jointly at 2,200gns was the 11 year old cow Millbrow Hannah, which sold for 1,200gns to BJ Lowery, Townend Farm, Whitbeck, Millom, Cumbria, along with her seventh calf, a heifer Millbrow Trudy, which made1,000gns to IK & AM Grisedale, of Greenmount Farm, Milton, Crooklands, Milnthorpe, Cumbria.

The production sale from the Treetops herd for Alan Haigh, of Ashgrove Farm, North Willingham, Marketr Rasen, Lincolnshire, peaked at 2,050gns for the maiden heifer by Greensons Gigolo, the potential show female Treetops Ronette, which sold to A Sayer, of Cresswell, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

The Foxcroft production saw a top price of 1,400gns for Wayne Lawson, of Foxes Farm, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, for the five year old in calf cow Foxcroft Nicky, purchased by WG Walker, of Cramie, Glen Prosen, Kirriemuir, Angus.

South Wales breeders DT Roberts & Son’s Carne Swansea-based herd production had a top price of 900gns for the in calf heifer Carne Roberta, selling to SW Thornber & Sons, of Templewood, Clitheroe, Lancashire.
