LIMOUSIN BREED WORLD RECORD SET AT 55,000gns

Records were smashed on Friday February 14th 2003 when a Limousin bull made a world record price for the breed of 55,000gns at the spring sale of bulls in Carlisle.

Grahams Samson

Grahams Samson brought the world record price and UK record for a British Limousin Cattle Society sale - and an all-breeds beef record for sales centre Borderway Mart, Carlisle - for Robert Graham, of Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan, Stirling, Scotland, shown in the hands of farm manager Brian Wills.

Ten other bulls sold for 10,000gns and more as the bidding was fierce for a high quality show of bulls. Averages and numbers of bulls were also up with the trade levelling at over £4,000 for 139 bulls sold.

The sale met a 75 per cent clearance of the 172 bulls forward, with 39 more bulls selling on the spring 2002 sale and an increased average of £123.

British Limousin Cattle Society chief executive Iain Kerr said: "It was a very high quality show with a tremendous strength and depth of bulls suitable for commercial and pedigree breeders and for that high standard of bulls breeders have got their just rewards with the fantastic trade.

" Within the space of 10 days at this sale and at Perth, 250 Limousin bulls have sold to average over £3,500. It is confirmation that there continues to be a continuous growth in demand for the Limousin breed. Commercial producers know that it is the versatile, complete beef breed and they know that when they are buying into the breed they are getting premium-earning cattle of either sex."

First bid for the record-breaking bull, which had attracted great interest and was much tipped to make a high price, was at 20,000gns. The crowded ringside was silent as Harrison & Hetherington auctioneer David Thomlinson rapidly took bids up to 55,000gns with Penrith breeder Doug Edgar writing the record cheque for the breed.

The 18 month old bull had been placed the supreme champion at the pre-sale show the day before by the judge Ian Callion, of Bolfornought, Stirling.

Doug Edgar and his wife Carol, from Fellside, Ousby, near Penrith, Cumbria have been breeding pedigree Limousins since 1979 and they have 60 cows in their Shire herd. "I liked previous bulls that the Samson's mother Lisette has bred and he has excellent figures with a beef value of LM+32," said Mr Edgar. "The bull also has a tremendous growth rate for his age."

Robert Graham said: "It is the best animal we have bred and he is out of an exceptional breeding cow." The Grahams herd has 50 pedigree Limousin cows and was formed in 1979.

Underbidders for Samson were father and son Drew and Bob Adam, of Newhouse of Glamis, Glamis, Angus, who kicked off the bidding at 20,000gns. Doug Edgar entered the bidding alongside several other breeders after the price topped 40,000gns.

Mr Graham has retained 200 of the 300 straws of semen taken from Samson and Mr Edgar said he would be making semen available for sale.

Auctioneer David Thomlinson described the sale as "unbelievable". He said: "This is one of the best shows of bulls we have ever seen at Carlisle and quality was particular evident among the intermediate and junior bulls. It has been a fantastic day for the Limousin breed."

The previous UK record for a Limousin bull was 21,000gns for Culbeg Andromedes, sold by Robert Graham's son, also Robert. The record price for a UK Limousin animal was 29,000gns paid for the cow Druk Larissa.

The evidence of buyers looking for bulls with high beef values is demonstrated by 11 bulls which sold which were in the top one per cent of the breed averaging £10,491. Eight with a below average EBV averaged £1,904; 10 with average EBVs averaged £2,552; 18 in the top 25 per cent averaged £2,864 while 24 in the top 10 per cent averaged £4,800.

Next in line of pricing came for Ron and Aileen Cruickshank, of Little Kype Farm, Strathaven, Lanark, who sold their reserve junior champion Kype Spartacus for 14,000gns to Northern Ireland breeders BG McCauley, Larkhill Farm, Sevenmile Straight, Muckamore, Co Antrim, and C McAuley, Ballynamullan, Carmorn Road, Toomebridge, Co Antrim.

The 18 month old Spartacus is by Waverbank Nassau, whose first two sons sold at Carlisle in May 2002 for 10,000gns and 5,000gns, and out of the home-bred Kype Poppet.

It was the very first bull into the ring, the French-bred Rossignol from George Hutton, of Setmabanning Farm, Threlkeld, Keswick, Cumbria, which sold for 13,000gns to John Richardson of Ghyll House, Dufton, Appleby, Cumbria. The September 2000-born French bred bull is sired by Jacot and out of Logette.

Brian Carter, of Priory Farm Blackborough End, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, sold Heathlands Samson for 12,000gns to Alan Fotheringham, of Forgadenny, Perth, Perthshire.

Heathlands Samson has a high beef value of LM35 putting him in the top one per cent of the breed and has plus score for milk. He is by Newhouse Lightfoot and out of Heathlands Nikki.

Father and son Brian and Matthew Jones of Bailea Farm, Heol Senni, Sennybridge, Brecon, Powys, Bailea Scoobydoo sold their reserve supreme champion for 11,500gns to R & N Barclay, Harestone Farm, Crathes, Banchory, Kincardineshire.

Scoobydoo is by their successful French bull, Marron and out of Bailea Inez. It follows on from their success at Perth earlier in the month when they shared the joint top price of 10,000gns for their 23 month old Bailey Seely.

Five more bulls sold at 10,000gns and more to include Roughley Solomon from Walter Smith (Farms), Chase Farm, Roughley, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, at 11,500gns jointly to Ron and Aileen Cruickshank, who showed the reserve junior champion, and Normande Limousin, of Cleghorn, Lanark.

Soloman a 21 month old son of Ronick Iceman is out of Roughley Lavish one of the largest cows in the herd and has a high beef value of LM33.

Karen Henshall, of Sarkshields Farm, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, had a good day with Loganburn Stirling, from her small pedigree herd which sold for 10,500gns to AI Services, of Ballycraigy, Antrim Road, Newtownabbey, Belfast.

Stirling is another high beef value bull at LM28 by Dundee and out of Ringway Olympia.

Among the breeders who travelled a distance to enjoy a successful sale were Andrew and Mark Quick of Loosebeare Manor, Zeal Monachorum, Crediton, Devon.

Loosebeare Supreme made 10,500gns to John and Heather Phillips, of Esgsirddaugoed, Cwmfelin-Mynach, Whitland, Carmarthen.

The 19 month old Supreme is a son of Greenwell Manager whose full brother was best young bull in the south west club herd competition. He is out of Loosebeare Jancy, one of the best cows in the Loosebeare herd.

The Quicks also sold Loosebeare Spitfire, another Greenwell Manager son and one of the best bulls bred at Loosebeare Manor with a beef value of LM27, for 10,000gns to H Annett & Son, Widdrington Farm, Morpeth, Northumberland. He is our of Creedy Forsythia.

Father and son David and Aled Edwards also had a successful sale after travelling from Home Farm, Cilycwm, Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, selling Dyfri Superior, for 10,000gns to J Capstick, Whicham Hall, Silecroft, Millom, Cumbria.

Dyfri Superior, a 19 month old son of their successful French sire Jockey, is three quarter brother to Sarkley Ragtime which sold for 20,000gns at the Carlisle May 2002 sale and broke the then centre record for the breed. Superior has a beef value of LM29 which places him in the top one per cent of the breed.

The Edwards also sold Dyfri Sundance for 8,500gns to Greenmount College, Greenmount, Antrim, Northern Ireland and Dyfri Sampras for 6,200gns to RA Patterson & Son, Capheaton, Newcastle on Tyne.

Victor Woods, of Greenmount College, selected the bull for the college's LIMO Project herd. The Jockey son has a beef value of LM34 which also qualifies him as a sire for the new Beef Quality Initative in Northern Ireland.

Averages: 22 senior bulls, £2,955.52 (minus £737.62); 58 intermediate bulls, £3,794.48 (minus £11.02); 54 junior bulls, £4,777.50 (plus £429.05); 134 bulls, £4,052.89 (plus £123.83).
