191 LIMOUSIN BULLS SELL TO A TOP OF 23,000GNS AT CARLISLE

Two bulls over 20,000gns – Nineteen over 5000gns – 78% clearance – Average of £3600 for 191 bulls.

The terrific depth in demand for Limousin bulls continued unabated at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Friday 2nd May 2003. Two bulls broke through the 20,000gns mark, a further five made over 10,000gns and nineteen in total went through the 5000gns mark. Commercial beef producers and pedigree breeders competed fiercely for the 245 bulls forward resulting in 191 selling at an average of £3614.75. This represented a 78% clearance of bulls and an increase of 41 bulls sold on the corresponding sale in 2002.

From the outset, the bulls in the senior section sold readily with seventy averaging £3414.75. A further 67 intermediates averaged £3813.50 whilst the junior bulls maintained the momentum with 54 averaging £3614.67.

British Limousin Cattle Society chief executive Iain Kerr was delighted with the sale and said: "The Limousin breed continues to go from strength to strength. In two sales at Carlisle this year, a massive 331 bulls have sold to an average of over £3800. Today we have seen commercial producers readily willing to bid into the teens of thousands to buy the bulls of their choice.”

" Again, it is the versatility of the breed that is building this trade. Both as a terminal sire and as a breeding female, commercial producers know that they are purchasing premium-earning cattle. Time and again, commercial producers say that the breed’s ease of calving is a huge bonus. 98% calving ratios means live calves and drives profit margins."

He added: "In such a big sale it is terrific for the breeders to get such a good clearance of bulls."

Sarkley Sebastian
Sarkley Sebastian 23,000gns

It was a great day for Welsh Limousin breeders with three of the four top prices going to the principality. Leading the way was the 23,000gns paid for the Show’s Intermediate and Overall Reserve Champion, Sarkley Sebastian from Glyn, Chris and Nigel Pennie, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys. This was also the second year in a row the Pennies have topped the May sale with a 20,000gns plus price. Sebastian, an August 2001 born bull, is sired by the prolific Broadmeadows Cannon and is out of a big Ronick Gains cow, Sarkley Marianne. A well muscled bull, he also sported a Beef Value of LM+31 putting him in the top 10% of recorded Limousin cattle.

The purchaser was father and daughter team Raymond and Louise Savage, 8 Scroggy Lane, Glenavy, Co. Antrim, N.Ireland for their 50-strong Aghadolgan herd. Mr. Savage was delighted with his purchase. “This bull had terrific muscle, power and strength. He had great plates and carried the width all the way down to the hocks,” he said. Mr. Savage, who features little Cannon breeding in his herd, also intends to collect and make semen available from the bull.

The 23,000gns paid was the top price paid for a Cannon son at a Society Sale and is also the top price paid for a Limousin bull going into Northern Ireland from Britain.

Bailea Spunkie
Bailea Spunkie 22,500gns

Following close behind was the 22,500gns paid for Bailea Spunkie from MT Jones, Bailea, Senny, Sennybridge, Brecon, Powys. The September 2001 born bull will travel back to Powys having been purchased by Andrew Powell, The Grove Farm, Knighton, Powys. Mr. Powell runs a small pedigree Limousin herd but is particularly well known for breeding top quality show calves from his commercial Limousin and Belgian Blue females. A heifer’s calf, Bailea Spunkie is sired by Marron whose sons, up to this sale, had sold up to 14,000gns at Carlisle.

Continuing the Welsh theme, the fourth top price of 13,000gns was paid to first time Carlisle exhibitor TM&EA Powell, Penyrheol Farm, Pengenffordd, Talgarth, Powys for Penyrheol Sam. This stylish Ronick Hawk son who stood second in his class to the Senior Champion was purchased by Matt and Craig Ridley for the Haltcliffe Herd, Haltcliffe, Hesket-New-Market, Wigton, Cumbria. Penyrheol Sam is out of the Heros sired dam Penyrheol Ophelia.

The February Sale at Carlisle had seen Robert Graham, Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan, Stirling break the Limousin world record in selling Grahams Samson for 55,000gns. This time round he followed that up by producing the third top price of the day when Grahams Tycoon sold for 16,000gns. One of the last bulls in the catalogue, Tycoon is a February 2002 born calf sired by Grahams Poncho, a maternal half brother to Samson, and is out of the French cow Hardie. Following this bull all the way through was purchaser and near neighbours, J & D Graham, Mains of Burnbank, Blairdrummond, who run the Burnton pedigree herd.

Sold into a commercial herd, was the Show’s Junior Champion, Woodhouse Smart at 11000gns. This December 2001 born bull is sired by Jockey, the stock sire in the Edwards Dyfri herd, who had sold five sons to average 7,000gns at the February 2003 Carlisle Sale. Woodhouse Smart was bred by Geoff Blood, Woodhouse Green Farm, Clay Lane, Endon, Soke-on-Trent and is out of the show cow Jencra Gemma. This bull was bought for the 400-plus suckler herd of David and Iain Robertson who farm at three units just north of Alnwick, Northumberland and run one of the biggest commercial Limousin bull teams in the country.

The Show’s Senior Champion was Greenbank Star from J & M Struthers, Greenbank Farm, Carluke, Lanarkshire. This classy 21-month-old bull is by Griseburn Legend, a Rake Terence grand son who has previously sired Greenbank Osirus a Carlisle February 2000 supreme champion. Greenbank Star was picked and purchased by David Work, Mains of Dumbreck, Udny, Ellon, Aberdeenshire. Mr. Work runs the 40-strong Dumbreck pedigree herd and is renowned for producing and showing commercial cattle of the highest quality. In 2000 in association with Scott Watson, he won the Supreme Championship at Royal Smithfield.

The last animal breaking the 10,000 gns mark was Saunders Stallone from A&W Watson, Saunders Close, Slaggyford, Brampton, Cumbria. This December 2001 born calf was very stylish and was the source of much ringside comment. He stood second in his class to the junior champion and promptly followed him through to place junior reserve champion. By Cloughead Jurassic who has previously sired bulls at Carlisle to 16,000gns, Saunders Stallone was out of the Heros cows Sarkley Nadia. This bull was purchased by Paul Dawes, Kipperknowle Barn, Dimore Manor Estate, Hereford who farm a total of 1600 acres on three farms, Dimore Manor in Herefordshire and two in Cheshire. As well as 140 suckler cows they run the 150-strong Dinmore pedigree herd.

Croftlimousin Spencer
Croftlimousin Spencer - Champion

It was a terrific couple of Days for David Freer, Croft Lodge Farm, Broughton Road, Croft, Leicester. He arrived at Carlisle with two embryo calves, same way bred, and went home with the Supreme Championship and a cheque for almost £18,000. Croftlimousin Spencer is sired by Marron, the same sire as the day’s second top priced bull, and is out of the Talent sired Ronick Gertrude. Gertrude had bred only one previous bull, Croftlimousin Napoleon, who was Reserve overall Champion at Carlisle in February 1998. This September 2001 born Champion bull was purchased jointly for 8000gns by pedigree breeders Gordon & Dougie Cruickshank, Gordonstone, Torphins, Banchory, Kincardineshire, who run the Balnacraig pedigree herd and Michael Massie, Mains of Elrick, Auchnaggat, Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

The second bull from David Freer, the same way bred Croftlimousin Squire stood second to the Champion in his class and sold for 9000gns to Sarah Jane Jessop, Castleton Farm, Station Road, Airth, Stirling for the Springsett herd she runs with Dougie McBeath.

The judge who had the mammoth task of placing the 245 bulls was the Limousin breeder Sam Coleman from Glarryford, Ballymena, Northern Ireland who runs the Glarryford herd.

The previous evening had witnessed the show and sale of Limousin females. Taking the Overall Championship in the show and the top price of 5000gns in the sale was the second lot, Cockleshell Layla from Society President, Peter Pitcher, Ivy House Farm, Friskney, Boston, Lincolnshire. This six year old Haltcliffe Handsome daughter was sold with her February 2003 Greensons Gigolo heifer calf at foot into the Mountainview pedigree herd of RE&KM Jackson, Mountain View, Seaville, Silloth, Cumbria.

Judging the females was Mary Reynolds, 11 North Lane, Buriton, Petersfield, Hampshire.
