LIMOUSIN HEIFER LEADS RED LADIES TRADE AT 10,000GNS

In-calf heifers at 10,000gns and 6,000gns respectively led a strong trade for Limousin females at the British Limousin Cattle Society’s annual Red Ladies Derby Sale held at Carlisle on Friday 7th November 2003.

Sixty-two of the seventy-seven lots forward sold with the sale grossing over £120,000. The trade for heifers underpinned a good day’s trading with 15 served heifers averaging £3125.50, an increase of £768.83 on the year, and 38 maiden heifers averaging over £1500.

Sheelin Shamrock
Champion Sheelin Shamrock - 10,000gns.

The five-figure top price of 10,000gns went to the classy April 2001 born in-calf heifer Sheelin Shamrock from Matt Brunton, Hill Cross Farm, Holy Cross Hill, Wormley, Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. This heifer featured super bloodlines being sired by Ronick Matador, a Broadmeadows Cannon son out of the 1996 Limousin 2000 Champion Ronick Danita. Sheelin Shamrock is out of Sheelin Jan, a 1994 cow sired by Fenrose Gambit and out of Greensons Fidji. She was sold in calf to Greenwell Manager. In 2003, Shamrock had won a string of show titles at various county shows and had been a part of the team that won the Breed Pairs Championship at the Royal Show. She was a Red Ladies winner to having been placed pre-sale Show Champion by Judge Joan Gilliland, The Grove, 110 Ballyrobin Road, N.Ireland.

Buying the Champion animal was Mrs Ann Wheeler for the Rosecroft pedigree herd of DK Wheeler, Goodiford Mill, Kentisbeare, Nr. Cullompton, Devon. Looking to build the small Rosecroft herd to around 12 high quality females, Shamrock fitted the bill perfectly. “She is a lovely heifer, extremely well bred and is a great foundation to breed from. I plan to show her and I hope she will help build the profile of the Rosecroft herd,” said Mrs Wheeler.

Newstart Soprano
Newstart Soprano - 6000gns.

Standing second in the Champion’s show class, and selling for 6,000gns, was Newstart Soprano from David and Mary Cormack, Abbots Close Farm, Sutton Road, Thirsk, N. Yorkshire. This in-calf heifer, also April 2001 born, was sired by Fenrose Orly and is out of the Ronick Matador sired Brockhurst Opera. She was purchased out of the ring by Alan Hall, Preston Tilery Farm, Brassington, Darlington, Co. Durham for his establishing Hallmark pedigree herd.

From this same high quality class, Thornage Sapphire who had stood third, made 5000gns for JF Allison, No. 2 The Pyghtle, Thornage, Nr. Holt, Norfolk. This thick heifer was sired by Cockleshell Olympus, a son of Greensons Gigolo and is out of the Heros sired Tredon Lavender. Sapphire again had a good 2003 show record behind her having won three breed and two interbreed titles. She was purchased for the Whinfellpark pedigree herd of Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor Farm, Clifton, Penrith.

David Freer, Croft Lodge Farm, Broughton Road, Croft, Leicester had two animals forward in the sale, the same way bred, and sold both for 4,500. The two heifers were both out of Ronick Gertrude who was purchased as a heifer for £4500 from the Ronick herd of David and Ronald Dick. Gertrude is by Talent and out of Ronick Tracy. To date Mr. Freer has sold three sons out of this dam who have featured in the sale Championship prizes at Carlisle. In May this year, Croftlimousin Spencer and Squire sold for 9000gns and 8000gns respectively with Spencer also attaining the Supreme Male Championship.

SKYE
Croftlimousin Skye, 4500gns

Croftlimousin Skye, who stood first in her class, was the first heifer to sell for 4500gns. An AI calf by the French sire Marron, this August 2001 born heifer was purchased for the Redrock pedigree herd of JS & JO Dodd, West View, Temple Sowerby, Penrith.

Croftlimousin Starr - 4500gns.

The second heifer at this price, Croftlimousin Starr, an embryo calf also sired by Marron, was purchased by D & V Hill, Whitewall, Great Asby, Temple Sowerby, Penrith for their Raysonhall pedigree herd. Three lots later, the same buyers purchased Rougley Starlight for 3000gns from Walter Smith (Farms) Ltd, Chase Farm, Roughley, Sutton Coldfield, W. Midlands. Starlight was sired by the Normande Fortress son, Scorboro Ingot and is out of Roughley Nadia.

TILI
Best Maiden Heifer Hafodlas Tili - 3500gns.

One of the youngest animals in the sale was Hafodlas Tili the September 2002 born maiden heifer from AH & GW Roberts, Hafod Las, Ysbyty Ifan, Betws-Y-Coed, Gwynedd. By Hafodlas Llion, a Broadmeadows Cannon son, this smart young heifer won her class and took the Sid Bowe Trophy for the Best Maiden Heifer shown. Out of the Titan sired Medrad Nia, Hafodlas Tili was sold for 3500gns to the Foxford herd of Myrtle Rutherford, 48 Saintfield Road, Killinchy, Co. Down, N.Ireland.

SAPPHIRE
Grahams Sapphire - 3000gns.

Grahams Sapphire, an October 2001 born served heifer from Robert Graham, Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan, Stirling made 3,000gns when selling to the Ioman herd of RH Quayle, Ballavitchel Farm, Crosby, Isle of Man. Sapphire is by the French sire Illegal and is out of Dyfri Ina who bred Grahams Omar, the Supreme Champion at Perth, February 2000, who sold for 7500gns. This heifer had earlier stood Overall Reserve Champion in the pre-sale show.
