LIMOUSIN WEANED CALF AT 2400GNS

Following up their Maiden heifer success at the Red Ladies Derby, barely a week before at Carlisle’s Borderway Mart, AH& GW Roberts from Hafod Las, Ysbyty Ifan, Betws Y Coed, Gwynedd, led the trade from the front at the society’s weaned calf sale at Carlisle with a 10-month old bull calf, Hafodlas Unben.

Only the third calf into the ring it went on to sell for 2400gns, to TW Gorst, Gilpin Farm near Kendal, home of the Hollythwaite pedigree herd. Mr Gorst bought this young bull to use on his 30 strong herd next summer. Hafodlas Unben was sired by Hafodlas Llion, a homebred bull by the prolific Broadmeadows Cannon. Llion was also the sire of the Maiden Heifer champion at the Red Ladies Derby, which sold on for 3500gns last week.

In all, over ten lots at this young stock sale, sold for more than 1000gns and the sale enjoyed a healthy 85% clearance rate of the catalogued entry.

Buyers were selective, with top quality animals earning the best bids of the day. Messrs T & J Derosa, Talfryn Cottage, Erbistock, Wrexham, Clwyd, attracted a lot of attention with their finely turned out calves. The stars of the Derosa Stable were Derosa Urban and Derosa Uccello, which sold for 1500 and 1600gns respectively. Both these well grown calves were by Derosa Ruggero, a son of Ideal, and even at this early stage are both well inside the top 10% of the breed. Buyers for these much admired bull calves were Mr C Jones, Rhyd Y Fallen, Ceredigion who forked out 1500gns for Derosa Urban, and Mr D Hall, Lanerton, Brampton paid 1600gns for Derosa Uccello.

A further 3 bull calves pushed over the 1000gns mark, including a bid of 1000gns for Glenrock Upstart, from Stephen Illingworth, Howgillside, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie. This late March born calf, by Glenrock Rocus, had a Beef Value of +30 and a 200-day weight just shy of 400kgs, at 394kg. In all, 30 bull calves levelled out at a respectable £828.10.

Mardoneen Ursula

A total of 4 heifer calves pushed through the 1000gns mark, including two for G Phillips & Son of Broadoak, Low Braithwaite, Ivegill, Carlisle, selling the two top priced heifers. Mardoneen Ursula took top spot with a final bid of 1450gns, travelling all the way down to its new home in Somerset, after Messrs Hutchings, Kings Brompton, bought her. Ursula, a stylish, well-made heifer was by the top French AI bull, Genial, and out of Mardoneen Pamella, who was NW heifer derby Champion in 2000. Ursula could well be one to keep an eye out for in next year’s showrings. Her stablemate, Mardoneen Una, a daughter of the Ronick Hawk sired bull, Greenfield Pete, and full sister to Mardoneen Siesta, who was shown with great success this summer, went on to make 1200gns.

Another calf by Glenrock Rocus from Stephen Illingworth, fired into four-figures was Glenrock Upsadaisy, which again had a good set of figures behind it, with a 200 day weight of 342kgs, and a beef value of LM+24. This calf was bought by the keen, young breeder, Alex Ibbs, 83 Holly House, Draycott Old Road, Stoke-on-Trent, looking to add a bit more quality to his already stylish herd, for 1100gns.
