50 Junior Bulls Average £5301 -144 Bulls Average £4046 – 31 Bulls Sell at Over £5000 – 67% Clearance Rate

A massive audience of commercial and pedigree producers competed fiercely for a quality show of Limousin bulls at the British Limousin Cattle Society’s Spring Show and Sale held at Borderway Market on Saturday 21st February 2004.

Top price for the day was 31,000gns paid for Wilodge Thumper.

Bidding was fast and furious with a terrific day’s trading topped at 31,000gns for the junior bull Wilodge Thumper offered by the prolific partnership of Christine Williams and Richard Bartle trading as DA Williams, Lodge Hill Farm, Park Lane, Shifnal.

The junior section of bulls was packed full of quality and the fifty sold from these classes averaged an incredible £5301. In all, 144 bulls averaged £4046 with 9 bulls selling at over £10,000 and 31 bulls in all (21%) selling at over £5000. The sale very clearly demonstrated the market’s demand for first quality bulls and the commercial producers willingness to pay five figures for bulls of this type.

Breed Society Chairman Peter Henshall was delighted that the sale reaffirmed the breed’s dominant industry position. “The breed’s strengths are built on good economics. Bulls that can produce both consistent, quality calves with conformation and also highly maternal, efficient female replacements add up to profitability”, he said.

Wilodge Thumper, a first prize winner in the junior section, was the first son offered at sale by Nouvelle Prospect a son of Wilson Jupiter out of Hartside Dream. This June 2002 born calf is out of the French bred Mascotte, a highly thought of breeding female that was purchased as a maiden heifer from the noted Chastanet herd. Buyer of the bull was Robert Hutchinson, Greenhill Farm, Balderton, Newark, Notts for his establishing Beaconsfield pedigree herd. He was naturally delighted with his purchase. “Buying this bull is an investment in building a quality herd. He is a bull with great natural muscling and is out of a tremendous mother. He is full of breed character with a magic head and I will look to him producing both bulls and females”. The Beaconsfield herd presently has 28 breeding females.

This sale also marked the continuation of a purple patch of sales for the Wilodge herd. In 2003, the herd set out on the show circuit with three bulls within their team. Since October of last year those three bulls have sold for a remarkable 30,000gns, 10,000gns and 31,000gns respectively to average just under 24,000gns!

Overall and Junior Champion, Goldies Tony, made 16,000gns.
