LIMOUSIN MAIDEN HEIFER MAKES 5000GNS AT CARLISLE

A sale of young Limousin stock from the White Rose Limousin Group saw a sixteen month-old maiden heifer make the top price of 5000gns at Carlisle’s Borderway Mart on Saturday 20th March 2004.

The White Rose Limousin Group consists of three Yorkshire based herds whose aim is to use performance recording and technical progress to improve member’s herds. At this youngstock sale, cattle were offered from the Rachels herd of Mark Woolhouse, Staveley Wold, North Dalton, Driffield, from the Scorboro herd of Jim and Richard Bloom, Decoy Farm, Scorborough, Driffield and from the Pennys herd of Paul Walker, Wilfholme Farm, Watton, Driffield.

The mixture of good visual cattle with high performance figures resulted in 38 maiden heifers averaging a very healthy £1470 and an almost total clearance of stock.

Pennys Tess
Pennys Tess

It was Pennys Tess, a November born 2002 heifer from Paul Walker who made the top price of 5000gns. This classy young animal was sired by Pennys Nimrod, a Ronick Hawk son who himself displays excellent figures for milk, growth and muscle. Out of Pennys Oriana, a Haltcliffe Hercules daughter, Pennys Tess sported a beef value of LM+34, a figure comfortably in the top 1% of recorded animals. Purchaser of this top priced animal was Harry Emslie, Brae of Coynach, Mintlaw, Peterhead for the Emslies pedigree herd. Commenting on his purchase, Mr. Emslie said, “this heifer was a fantastic looking breeding animal whose looks are backed up by some very strong performance figures”.

The Pennys herd enjoyed a super day’s trading with ten heifers averaging £1795. The herd’s second top price was the 1900gns paid for Pennys Tina, a two-year-old heifer again sired by Pennys Nimrod. This heifer was out of Rachels Idole, a son of Rachels Eureka out of Rachels Una. Purchaser of this animal was W Orme, Home Farm, Stalling Busk, Leyburn, N Yorks who runs the Busk pedigree herd.

Also at 1900gns was Pennys Uther, a year-old maiden heifer with a beef value of LM+31. Scorboro Olympian, again a bull with very good figures for both milk and muscle, sired this calf. The dam, Rachels Letitia, was by Melys Heritage, a son of Roughley Capricorn and is out of Rachels Hebe. This calf also went to a pedigree herd with the buyer being Mr&Mrs PA Kermode, Orrisdale Farm, Ballasalla, Isle of Man who have the Kermode prefix.

Pedigree buyers were to the fore and GL&D Reid, South Park House, Muthill, Crieff, who run the Osprey herd, purchased the top price animal from the Rachels herd of Mark Woolhouse, Rachels Topaz, for 2700gns. This April 2002 born heifer was sired by Rachels Luigi, a son of Rachels Hamlet, who has a beef value of LM+45. Rachels Shula, a half sister of Topaz, was a first prizewinner at the Royal Highland Show. Again, figures were to the fore and Rachels Topaz carried a beef value of LM+36.

Another high figured animal, the young bull Rachels Ulric, sold for 2000gns to W Weightman, Haining Law Farm, Seaton, Seaham, Co. Durham. Rachels Luigi also sired this ten-month-old heifer. Out of the top ranked EBV cow in the herd, Rachels Onyx who has a beef value of LM+45, this calf has a beef value of LM+46 and is in the top 1% of recorded animals for muscle and growth.

Rachels Tabitha, an October 2002 born heifer, made 1800gns when selling to the Hollingreave herd of S Littlewood, Hollingreave House Farm, Raygate, Newmill, Huddersfield. This heifer featured an interesting pedigree having been sired by the French bull Ionesco, a son of Bambino, and being out of Rachels Olivia whose great grand sire is Ronick Gains. This heifer again had good figures with an overall beef value of LM+32.

GL&D Reid, South Park House, Muthill, Crieff, who had earlier purchased the top price from the Rachels herd, also purchased the top price from the Scorboro herd of Jim & Richard Bloom. Scorboro Teazel, an October 2002 heifer, was purchased for 2400gns. By Scorboro Ramrod, a son of Pennys Nimrod, Teazel was out of Scorboro Rhodora, a Normande Judge daughter, and carried a high beef value of LM+36. The same buyer later purchased Scorboro Utmost for 1700gns. The Normande Judge son, Scorboro Olympian, sired this February 2003 born heifer. Out of Scorboro Omen, a daughter of Ronick Iceman, this heifer sported a terrific beef value of LM+40.

Scorboro Truelove, also a Scorboro Olympian daughter, made 1700gns when selling to the Redpaths herd of Redpath Farms, Spylaw, Kelso, Roxburghshire. Out of Scorboro Naomi, another Iceman daughter, this December 2002 born heifer had a top 1% beef value of LM+33.

The sale also featured the Dispersal of the Knockhill herd of Messrs WW Powner & Son, St.Vedas, Coldingham Sands, Coldingham, Berwickshire. The Powner’s top price was the 2500gns paid for the January 2000 born cow Knockhill Rose. This female was by Newhouse Noel, a son of the bull Jupiter, and purchased in Perth in 1999 for 8500gns. She was out of the Talent sired cow, Knockhill Iris. The purchaser was P Hill, Old Hall Farm, Ugthorpe, Whitby, who runs the Ugthorpe pedigree herd.

G&P Long Mill Brow Farm, Skelwith Bridge, Ambleside paid 2300gns to add Knockhill Rosette to their Millbrow pedigree herd. This March 2000 born cow was again sired by Newhouse Noel and was out of Normande Mariette, a daughter of Filip. Mariette’s grand dam, Rosette, has produced bulls that have sold up to 12,000gns.

Selling at 1900gns was the three-year-old Knockhill Surprise. Again sired by Newhouse Noel, this heifer is out of Hydesville Emerald, daughter of Hydesville Vandal. RJ Shennan purchased her for his Farden pedigree herd at Farden, Turnberry, Ayrshire.
