sale dates / sale reports / carlisle 1st may 200443,000 GNS HALTCLIFFE BULL TOPS CARLISLE LIMOUSIN SALE Two bulls over 20,000gns – Thirty-three over 5000gns – 70% clearance – Average of £3918 for 178 bulls. Matt & Craig Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket New Market, Wigton, had a day to remember at the May Limousin Bull Sale when they attained the sale’s top price of 43,000gns and sold two further bulls at 18,000gns and 10,000gns to gross an incredible 71,000gns. It was a remarkable performance by the Ridleys who have quickly rebuilt their herd back to a position of high quality and prominence only three years after having been depopulated during the FMD crisis.
The top priced bull, Haltcliffe Ullswater, was a February 2003 born calf that had won the youngest class in the catalogue at the pre-sale show judged by Brian Wills, Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan, Stirling. It was sired by Sympa, the Ridley’s French stock bull purchased as a calf-at-foot in 2001. Sympa’s mother is Operette, a quality female who was a French National Limousin Show winner in 2000. The dam of Haltcliffe Ullswater, Renoncule is also French bred and is sired by Ludo. This combination of visual quality and superb bloodlines led breeders EH Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys of the Sarkley herd and by CL & FE Jerman, Glangwden, Trefeglwys, Caersws, Powys of the Glangwden herd to pay, what is the second highest price ever for a Limousin bull. Speaking after the sale Mr. Pennie and Mr. Jerman said; “This bull is the ‘real McCoy’ and in our eyes was as close to perfection as possible. We had no hesitation in investing what we consider to be the very best of genetics”. In addition to use within their respective herds of 130 and 100 cows, the Pennies and Jermans will also collect and make semen available from this bull. The Pennie team of father Glyn, and sons Chris and Nigel had had a fantastic day themselves, having sold four bulls at 15,000gns, 13,500gns, 11,000gns and 11,000gns to gross 50,500gns. Overall, another excellent day’s trading, with plenty of depth, saw 178 bulls sell to average £3918.62, an increase of £303.95 on the year and a total gross of just under £700,000. Two bulls sold at over 20,000gns and thirty-three in all sold to 5000gns and over. From the outset, the older bulls sold readily and both the senior and intermediate sections averaged just over £3500. For the second sale running, the junior section saw an average in excess of £5300, this time for 48 bulls. Commenting on the sale, BLCS
Chief Executive, Iain Kerr said, “It
was a strong sale with plenty of depth throughout the catalogue. Commercial
buyers are reacting to the industry signals by looking for constant
improvement in their breeding females and the finished product. They
are looking for a step up in quality and the breeders are responding
to this with the quality of bulls they are bringing forward”.
The second top price in the sale was the 24,000gns paid to George Hutton,
Setmabanning, Threlkeld, Keswick for Cloughead Titanic. Again, a class
winner from the junior section, this October 2002 born calf was sired
by the noted French bull Heros. Titanic’s dam is Cloughead
Orrissa sired by the prolific Cloughead Jurassic. This bull carried
tremendous shape and muscling was very correct. Again it was a partnership
that purchased the bull with Jimmy Mulholland, Midtown Farm, Great
Orton who runs twenty breeding females in the Liscon pedigree herd
and Robert and Mike Scott the noted suckled calf producers from Thirwall
Castle, Greenhead, Carlisle, with around 400 mainly three-quarter bred
Limousin females, joining forces. Greenwell Major was also the sire of Sarkley Thunderbolt, a first prize bull in the intermediate section who went on to sell for 13,500gns. A September 2002 born calf, Thunderbolt’s dam was Sarkley Judy, a Ronick Gains daughter who was also the dam of Sarkley Ragtime, who topped the Carlisle 2002 May sale at 20,000gns. Again it was a pedigree combination that bought this bull with breeders Alan Common, Crossdykes Farm, Lockerbie of the Crossdykes herd and George Wilson, Reddings, Moffat of the Reddings herd, snapping this bull up. Two further bulls from the Sarkley herd made 11,000gns. The first was Sarkley Topknot a June 2002 born calf, got by AI, sired by Haltcliffe Novel. Out of the Talent sired Winsbury Ebony, this bull also went to a pedigree herd, with Jamie Cooper, Hilltop, Lanefoot Road, Dacre, Harrogate adding the bull to his Tomschoice pedigree herd. Later in the catalogue, in the last senior section class, Sarkley Trendsetter also made 11,000gns. This bull, again by AI, was sired by Ronick Luke, a Cannon son with a track record of breeding shapely progeny. The bloodlines were again impressive with the dam, Sarkley Marianne, being the mother of Sarkley Sebastien, the Pennie’s 23,000gns sale topper at last May’s corresponding sale. Trendsetter was purchased by Messrs CG Simpson & Sons, Square House Farm, Quebec, Co. Durham. Another strong team of bulls from Jim Goldie and sons Hamish and Bruce, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries, saw six of their lots sell for in excess of 5,000gns. Top of their trade was the 12,000gns paid for Goldies Ultraspecial. This junior bull was born in January 2003. An embryo calf, he was got by the AI sire Malibu and is out of the French bred Idole. Ultraspecial is half brother to the sire of the 14,000gns bull sold at Carlisle at the February 2004 sale. Purchasers were AG Kirton & Sons, Severn Lodge Farm, Buttonbridge Lane, Kinlet, Bewdley, Worcs, who run the Ashledge pedigree herd. The Goldies second highest price was the 9,000gns paid for intermediate class section winner Goldies Tamsin. Again, a French bred embryo calf, this bull was sired by Domino and is out of Dalida. This October 2002 born bull had an outstanding Beef Value of LM+36 and was sold into the East Midlands, to HG Blaxell & Sons, Eastfield Farm, Hicking, Norwich, Norfolk who run the Blaxfield pedigree herd. Tunnelby Monkeytricks has been a prolific sire of five figure price bulls at Carlisle for Mr J Handley, Gunnerfleet Farm, Chapel le Dale, Ingleton, Carnforth. On this occasion, Gunnerfleet Twister, a July 2002 born calf made 11,000gns. This calf was out of the Heros daughter Gunnerfleet Nivia and was purchased by pedigree breeders Messrs J&M Pirie, Chapel Park, Lynchat, Kingussie, Inverness-shire. Champion of the junior section was Haltcliffe Underwriter, an embryo calf again from Matt & Craig Ridley. By the same sire, Sympa, as the day’s top price bull, this January 2003 born calf’s dam was Ronick Ricole, a Broadmeadows Cannon daughter. This was another bull heading to Northern Ireland, this time to the Craigatoke pedigree herd of Mr MJ Conway, 26 Meenagorp Road, Plumbridge, Co. Tyrone who paid 10,000gns. It was an excellent day for Messrs D & CE Marston, Easegill Head, Wharton, Kirkby Stephen who sold Easegillhead Terminator for 9,800gns. This AI calf, by the prolific Tunnelby Monkeytricks, was out of Shire Pixie, who was sired by the Ronick Gains son, Shire Milton. Purchasing this November 2002 born calf was Messrs A Minto & Son, Town Head, Dolphinton, West Linton, Peebleshire. Twemlows Torville from Will and
Jackie Forrester, Twemlows Farm, Higher Heath, Whitchurch, Shropshire,
who stood second in his class to the eventual Senior Champion, went
on to sell for 9,000gns. Born in June 2002, this bull was sired by
Kype Ramsay, a son of Cloughead Lord and is out of the Haltcliffe Hercules
sired dam, Wiggonby Polly. A bull with plenty of power, he also carried
a top 1% Beef Value of LM+40. This bull was purchased by Mr P Robinson,
Slatehall, 174 Main Street, Seahouses, Northumberland. GOLDIES HERD LEADS LIMOUSIN FEMALES AT 8,000GNS A small sale of pedigree females on Friday evening (April 30th) saw JK Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries, lead the trade with the 8,000gns paid for Ronick Sandra and her bull calf at foot, Goldies Unsunghero. Ronick Sandra is a full sister to the prolific Ronick Hawk, one of the most widely used bulls in the Limousin breed. She is a daughter of Broadmeadows Cannon and is out of the Talent sired Ronick Esther. She was sold with a very smart seven-month-old bull calf at foot that was sired by Lascard. The purchasers were Mr A Irving, Toppin Castle Farm, Heads Nook, Brampton. The show’s Female Champion, judged by Hazel Fotheringham, Westhall Farm, Forgandenny, Perthshire was the two-year-old Newstart Tangarine exhibited by David and Mary Cormack, Abotts Close Farm, Sutton Road, Thirsk, North Yorkshire. She made the sale’s second top price at 4100gns when selling to the pedigree herd of Roger Chadwick, Cronk Beck Farm, Greeba, Isle of Man. This heifer is out of Ryedale Mandarina, a daughter of Greenwell Ike. Her sire is Ryedale Orion, a Cannon son who was a multi Royal show winner in 1999 who went on to sell for 10,500gns in 2002.
