OUTSTANDING LIMOUSIN TRADE PEAKS AT 14,500 GNS

A Pedigree Limousin Breeders’ Sale at Carlisle on Saturday 4th September 2004 saw a tremendous trade for breeding cattle from four pedigree herds with 78 lots grossing over £240,000 and a leading price of 14,500gns.

The sale featured production offerings from the Greenwell Herd of Messrs JT & J Nattress & Son, Greenwell Farm, Lanchester, Durham, the Rombalds Herd of Mr GC Rowson, Goose Farm, Eastmoor, Sutton-on-the-forest, York and the Grahams Herd of R&J Graham, Airthrey Kerse Farm, Bridge of Allan and was complemented by a guest consignor Mr W Bedell of the Staveley Herd, Neuadd Isaf, Penybont, Llandrindod Wells, Powys.

Staveley Rebecca, an Octave daughter, sold in calf to Picaro and with her heifer calf at foot Staveley Valerie.

Topping the sale at 14,500gns was the December 2000 born Staveley Rebecca with her heifer calf at foot Staveley Valerie, sired by the French bull, Opera. Sired by Octave and out of Staveley Irene, Staveley Rebecca and her calf were described as “the best heifer and calf unit Staveley has ever offered at public auction,” by breeder William Bedell. Guaranteed in-calf to Picaro, this was one of several purchases by Smiths of Bloxham, Newlands Farm, Milton Rd, Bloxham, Banbury who run the Ironstone pedigree herd.

Asked what had spurred him on, Peter Smith replied: “pure and simply the bloodlines on offer, to keep improving our stock.” Peter farms 300 acres with 100 pedigree Limousins plus followers and bought Staveley Rebecca with a telephone bid having seen the animal on farm.

Top priced heifer was Grahams Trudy, a Grahams Poncho daughter, which made 8000gns.

The strength in depth of the Grahams Herd was underlined by an outstanding average of over £3,500 for the 31 lots on offer. 18 cows served and/or suckling averaged £3,575, 7 served heifers were at £3,480 and 5 maiden heifers equated to £3,507.

Leading price was Grahams Trudy, a two-and-a-half year old served heifer out of senior herd sire Grahams Poncho and dam Guerriere and in-calf to Waindale Prime. A stylish heifer, she heads to the Rosecroft Herd of Mr & Mrs DK Wheeler, Goodiford Mill, Kentisbeare, Cullompton, Devon where she joins the impressive Grahams Unbeatable, purchased by the Wheelers at the ILC Elite Sale on August 6th for the top price of 35,000gns. The Wheelers were again in action on the following lot, purchasing Grahams Tulip another in-calf heifer, this time to Tomy to the tune of 5,800gns.

Grahams Tulip was Limousin and Interbreed Champion at the Drymen Show 2004 and is out of Pipmanie by Grahams Poncho. Parade, a March 1999 born third calver out of Joviale and sired by Illegal along with her bull calf at foot Grahams Vulcan, by Poncho went to an undisclosed buyer for 7,200gns. 7,200gns was also the price paid by I Wilkinson of the Redstroke Herd, Baldarroch Farm, Murthly, Perth for Sage, a March 2001 born first calver out of Laps and by Lascive. Offered with bull calf Grahams Unicorn at foot and in calf to Samy, this was another fantastic outfit. Grahams Rene went to Grahams Agricultural, Meadow Lea Farm, Mickle Trafford, Chester for 6,000gns. Out of Feuille and sired by Logis she is a second-calver with bull calf at foot, Grahams Ulisses, the first bull calf by Grahams Samson to go on sale from the Grahams Herd.

On a very strong day for the Rombalds Herd, both top lots were again bought by Smiths of Bloxham. Rombalds Sabrina, a January 2001 born first calver, is out of Newsham Judy and the renowned bull Dauphin. With her bull calf at foot, Rombalds Venice by sire Lino, she was offered in-calf to Oxygene, another fine example of French genetics. On the other side of the age spectrum was Rachels Melody, the most successful cow in the herd according to the Rowsons with an EBV of +25. She is in-calf to Greensons Gigolo who was also sire to Rapier and Triumph. 5,200gns and 5,000gns were the prices paid respectively to join the Ironstone Herd of Smiths of Bloxham.

Leading the way for the Greenwell Herd was Greenwell Natasha, a good-looking cow who breeds true to herself according to the Nattresses. Out of Greenwell Gevorn and by Igolo, this prolific breeding cow has both Gigolo and Talent as grand-sires. Greenwell Viking, her bull calf at foot by Ronick Member, has a lot of potential having weighed in at 197kg at 100 days. Greenwell Natasha was offered in-calf, having run with Tanin. New owners at 4,800gns are JS Gibson & Son, Thornton Tower, Newbrough, Hexham, Northumberland.
