6 bulls over 10,000gns – 22 bulls over 7000gns – 137 Bulls Average £3661 – Averages Up £150 – Sale Grosses Over £500,000

The renowned Glenturk pedigree name truly made its mark in a Limousin ring when Glenturk Ultrasolid, a May 2003 born calf by Grahams Rocksolid, bred and sold by Brian Allan and his son Graham of Glenturk, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, made the top price of 21,000gns at the Autumn Show & Sale of Pedigree Limousins, held on Saturday 16th October 2004 at Carlisle.

Glenturk Ultrasolid
21,000gns - Glenturk Ultrasolid

At the pre-sale show held on Friday, this young bull had been placed as Junior Champion and Overall Reserve Champion by judge, Michael Priestley, Hill Top Farm, Denholm, Bradford. A bull of tremendous scale, Rocksolid combined shape, muscling, excellent bloodlines and performance figures. The sire, Grahams Rocksolid, was purchased for the Glenturk herd at Perth in February 2002 for 12,600gns. The dam, the 14-year-old Luttrellstown Flossie, a Talent daughter, was purchased from the Republic of Ireland where she was a prolific show winner. This total package of breeding and performance convinced Doug Mash of the well-known Brockhurst herd, Torrington Farm, Grove Lane, Chesham, Buckinghamshire to pay the day’s lead price. “This bull has great scope, length and back end and above all excellent growth potential,” said Doug, commenting on his purchase. With a herd now numbering around 200 pedigree breeding females and his second on-farm sale planned for next April, Doug is keen to raise the profile of the breed in Southern England.

It was another excellent day’s trading for the Limousin breed with, on the year, 10 more bulls selling and averages up by over £150. In all, six bulls sold for over 10,000gns and 22 bulls sold at 7,000gns and above. 137 bulls averaged £3,661 giving a fantastic sale gross of over £500,000. From a big entry, the clearance rate of bulls sold from the 248 forward was just over 55%.

The strength of the sale was welcomed by the British Limousin Cattle Society’s Chief Executive, Iain Kerr. “Breeders provided a terrific show of bulls with a real depth in quality right through the catalogue. To sell more bulls in the year and for averages to go up by so much is a total endorsement by beef producers that breeders are providing the commercially relevant, profit leaving bulls they are looking for,” he said. “You always want to sell more bulls but 137 is entirely realistic for an October Sale and buyers have such depth of numbers from which to choose their bulls. This sale also came on the back of the ILC Elite Sale in August where a world record average was set for bulls, many of which would otherwise have been here,” he continued.

Goldies Uppercrust
16,000gns - Goldies Uppercrust

It was another superb day’s trading for the prolific Goldie herd of Jim Goldie and sons, Hamish and Bruce, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries who captured the second and third top prices and sold five top drawer bulls for a combined total of 45,500gns. At 16,000gns was Goldies Uppercrust an embryo calf by French bull Imperial and a first prize winner in the junior section. This June 2003 born calf was out of Emue, a French cow who bred Goldies Tony, the Supreme Champion at Carlisle in February 2003 and who also sold for 16,000gns. This well-bred young bull sported a Beef Value of LM+39 and sold into the pedigree herd of Lincolnshire breeders John and Michael Fieldson, Poplar Farm, Corringham, Gainsborough.

Selling at 12,000gns was the previous lot, Goldies Unionflag who stood second in the same class. Again an embryo calf sired by Imperial, Unionflag was out of Ronick Isabelle whose mother, Ronick Esther bred the noted Ronick Hawk. This June 2003 born bull was purchased by Andrew Ewing, Drumbretton, Annan, Dumfriesshire.

Matt & Craig Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket New Market, Wigton, featured yet again in the top end of the prices when selling Haltcliffe Understudy for 10,500gns. This embryo calf was entirely French bred with the sire being Leo and the dam Idole. Born in March 2003, this shapely first prize winner from the intermediate section was purchased by Mr JE Carruthers, Silloans, Rochester, Newcastle On Tyne who runs the Redesdale pedigree herd. Haltcliffe Ulex, also from the Ridleys had been placed the previous evening as the show’s Intermediate Champion. This March 2003 born bull was sired by the French bull Sympa and was out of Cloughead Romany a daughter of Oasis. In May of this year, Haltcliffe Ullswater, a bull by the same sire had sold for 43,000gns at Carlisle. Haltcliffe Ulex was purchased by Messrs DR Owen & Son, Sandilands Farm, Tywyn, Gwynedd who run the Vaenol pedigree herd.

Two bulls made 10,000gns. The first was Ronick Upshot from David & Ronald Dick, Mains of Throsk, Stirling. This March 2003 born bull carried an impressive pedigree having been sired by Bailea Olympia, a bull purchased at Carlisle for 14,000gns and being out of Ronick Janita the breed champion at the Royal Highland and Royal Shows on several occasions. In August, Upshot had won the Junior Male Championship at the ILC National Limousin Show. These factors, along with some impressive figures giving an overall Beef Value of LM+37, resulted in Jim Bloom, Decoy Farm, Scorborough, Driffield buying the bull for the Yorkshire based White Rose Limousin breeding group.

Also at 10,000gns was Maraiscote Uganda from John Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Bogside, New Mains, Wishaw. This bull, displaying width with shape and muscle, caught the eye of suckled calf producer, Henry Ridley, Woodhall, Hesket New Market, Wigton. A first prize winner in the Junior Section, this April 2003 born bull sired by Tyddyn Mei, a son of Broadmeadows Cannon, was out of the Glespin Classic sired Maraiscote Marguerite.

Ian and Wendy Callion of the Lodge Herd, Bolfornought Farm, Stirling provided the show’s Overall Supreme Champion in the form of Lodge USA. Having placed Senior Champion, this long, shapely bull went all the way through to take the top pre-sale honour. Again a bull that had featured at the ILC National Limousin Show, Lodge USA, February 2003 born, was a son of Ronick Luke and is out of the Cloughead Charlie sired Lodge Golden. Carrying a Beef Value of LM+30, the Show Champion was snapped up for the commercial herd of GW Richardson, Bedrule, Hawick, Roxburghshire.

TW & J Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Brydekirk, Annan, also made 9200gns when selling Low Abbey United. This March 2003 bull was a long muscly bull who carried an excellent Beef Value of LM+36 and some strong bloodlines. His sire, Grahams Ramrod is by Logis, the same sire as the day’s top price bull and is out of Lisette, the mother of world record holder Grahams Samson. Low Abbey United’s dam is Low Abbey Rainbow by Bailea Laja. This combination of breeding and performance attracted Patrick Greed, Columbjohn Farms Ltd, Rewe, Exeter, Devon for the Killerton pedigree herd.

8,200gns was paid by P Guiry & Son of Alnwick, Northumberland for the April 2003 Jencralodge Ulex from Malcolm J Smith’s Stoke-On-Trent pedigree Limousin herd. From a strong female line and out of the herd’s show heifer, Rebecca, he was sired by Haltcliffe Novel. Moving on from his success as Reserve Male Champion at the Nantwich Show, he was another class winner here at Carlisle.

Gallowshieldrigg Uno, a January 2003 born bull from AR Asfari was purchased by Colin MacMillan, Ardbeg, Port Ellen, Isle of Islay for the sum of 8,000gns. A Cloughhead Jurassic son from the Broadmeadows Cannon/Glorieuse bloodline and out of home-bred dam Gallowshieldrigg Michelle, this shapely bull has 200 day milk figure of +3 putting him in the top 10%.

Matching the 8,000gns mark was Newstart Unlimited, a Ronick Iceman son and out of Ryedale Mandarina, from Mr D & Mrs M Cormack. Winning his class the previous day, he also featured prominently on the Summer show circuit, placing 1st at the North Yorkshire County Show. He now embarks on a journey to Orkney, joining the Lagas Herd of Mr R Cursiter & Son, Laga Farms Ltd, Arwick, Evie, Orkney.
