20,000gns MAIDEN HEIFER LEADS PREMIER RONICK LIMOUSIN SALE

The first sale held from the famous Ronick Limousin herd of David & Ronald Dick, Mains of Throsk Farm, Stirling sparked an electric trade at Carlisle’s Borderway Mart on Saturday 20th November, 2004.

Top prices of 20,000gns and 18,000gns was complemented by twenty other lots making 4,500gns or more. The quality of the breeding stock on view coupled to the tremendous depth of proven pedigrees drew a packed ringside of established and new breeders. Bidders competed fiercely for the lots of their choice resulting in some tremendous averages. Forty-seven cows averaged just under a cracking £4,000 whilst a sparkling heifer trade saw an average of £4,261.76 for the seventeen sold. In all, 93 females averaged a fantastic £3,646.99. The total gross of the sale was a mighty £345,260.07.

Ronick Telma
Ronick Telma

It was the maiden heifer, Ronick Telma, that lead the day’s trade at 20,000gns when selling to Harry Emslie Limousins, Kinknockie, Mintlaw, Peterhead. This classy October 2002 born heifer was sired by Bailea Olympia, purchased by the Dicks at Carlisle in May 2000 for 14,000gns, and is out of Ronick Pelma. Earlier this summer she had been shown successfully, winning titles at the ILC National Limousin Show as well as Gargunnock Show.

It was as a young calf that Mr. Emslie first saw his eventual purchase: “When you visit the Ronick herd you are mesmerized by the quality of females. Telma caught my eye as a young calf and she has been a tremendous beast at all stages. In my eyes, she is the complete modern Limousin female. Her bloodlines go back to one of the Ronick foundation cows, Hampton Maria, and this line and the quality it has produced was particularly attractive to me,” Mr. Emslie commented. In 2003, Mr. Emslie purchased Wilodge Ritzy at 20,000gns from DA Williams and Grange Rialto from George Smith for 18,500gns. Building a quality herd from first class foundations is the goal of the Emslies’ herd which presently stands at twenty-five breeding females.

The second top price of the day was the 18,000gns paid for the May 1996 cow Ronick Money by DB Mairs & Son, 194 Hillhead Road, Ballyclare, Co. Antrim. This powerful, big cow is a daughter of Ronick Gains and is out of the Broadmeadows Cannon sired Ronick Honey. She was sold with her sixth calf at foot, a heifer by Ronick Rio Grande named Ronick Valueless. In August, Ronick Money had stood second in a strong cow class at the ILC National Limousin Show. The purchaser, Bernard Mairs, is building up a pedigree herd of around twenty females under the Bearbrook prefix. Again, he had done his ‘homework’ prior to the sale and was attracted by the combination of visual appeal and bloodlines.

His plan now is to get Money in calf and show her through the summer of 2005. “She really is a great cow and worth every penny,” was Mr. Mairs assessment of his new acquisition. Later in the sale Ronick Tweenie, a March 2002 born served heifer, was also purchased for the Bearbrook herd for 6,000gns. This Bailea Olympia daughter is out of Ronick Jeanee. The dam line of this animal includes Fingask Natalie, the original foundation cow of the Ronick Herd. Tweenie had also been shown successfully in the summer having won her class at the ILC National Limousin Show.

Mr & Mrs DK Wheeler, Goodiford Mill, Kentisbeare, Nr. Cullompton, Devon continued to build their twenty female strong Rosecroft pedigree herd when purchasing Ronick Tess, a September 2002 born maiden heifer for 7,000gns. By Goldies Porterhouse this heifer is out of the Ronick Idol sired Ronick Phyliss. The Wheelers have been prolific Limousin purchasers in 2004 having most notably bought Grahams Unbeatable for 35,000gns at the ILC Elite Sale in August.

Selling at 6,500gns was Ronick Peanut. This five and a half year old cow was sired by Newhouse Leigh and is out of Ronick Nougat. She was sold in-calf to Ronick Rio Grande and with her February 2004 born heifer calf, Ronick Venus by Bailea Olympia, at foot. The purchasers were Skye Beef, 6 Galtrigill, by Denvegan, Isle of Skye. The same purchasers later bought Ronick Melke, an eight year old Broadmeadows Cannon daughter for 4,800gns.

Ronick Nutella, a 1997 born cow, came under the hammer at Lot 6. In June 2004, this Calice sired cow had won the best Limousin cow title at the Royal Highland Show. Out of Ronick Flora and sold with her Bailea Olympia sired bull calf, Ronick Vegan, at foot, this maternal sister to Ronick Marg made 6,300gns when selling to the Westhall herd of Alan Fotheringham, Craighall Farm, Forgandenny, Perth.

Ronick Usk was a much admired maiden heifer sired by the Lascard son, Ronick Rascard. This January 2003 born heifer out of the Cannon daughter Ronick Risky, made 6200gns when selling to the Beaconsfield herd of RP & DL Hutchinson Ltd, Greenhill Farm, Balderton, Newark, Notts.

Five lots sold at 6,000gns. The first at this price was Ronick Neat who was purchased by Jim Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries. This 1997 born twin to a female was sired by Broadmeadows Cannon and is out of Ronick Isabelle. Isabelle’s grand dam is Ronick Esther, the mother of Ronick Hawk, who was purchased in 2001 for the Goldies herd. A half brother to Ronick Neat, Goldies Union Flag, was subsequently sold for 12,000gns in October 2004.

Sold separately, Ronick Neat’s bull calf at foot, Ronick Viking, sired by Bailea Olympia made 3,000gns.

Limousin Heifer
Winning the Holiday to Portugal was Mr Kenwell, with the lucky heifer (and new owners!)

Continuing to underpin a strong cow trade was Ronick Poshspice, who also sold for 6,000gns to the Bryngles herd of G Evans, 11 Maes-Y-Grug, Bruncrug, Tywyn, Gwynedd. An April 1999 daughter of the Tarvis sired Ronick Idol, Poshspice was out of Ronick Jeanee. She was sold in calf to Ronick Rio Grande and with her February 2004 born heifer calf at foot, Ronick Veronica by Bailea Olympia. Poshspice was a maternal sister to Ronick Tweenie who also sold for 6,000gns.

The Lodge herd of Ian and Wendy Callion purchased Ronick Shadow, a July 2001 born heifer with her first calf at foot. This full sister to Broadmeadows VIP is sired by Ronick Idol and is out of the Hampton Nadine daughter, Broadmeadows Vera. She was sold with her February 2004 born heifer calf at foot, Ronick Veil sired by Ronick Gains.

A further Ronick Idol daughter, the five and a half year old cow Ronick Pinesse, also reached the 6,000gns mark when selling to the Orkney based Sebay herd of Balfour Baillie, Sebay Cottage, Tankerness. Out of the Cannon sired Haltcliffe Finesse, Ronick Pinesse was sold with her Bailea Olympia sired April 2004 born calf at foot Ronick Vince.
