sale dates / sale reports / carlisle 19th february 200542,000 GNS CLOUGHEAD BULL STARS AT CARLISLE LIMOUSIN SALE34 Junior Bulls Average £4953 - 124 Bulls Average £3413 - 31 Bulls Sell at Over £4000 It was a day to remember for George Hutton, Setmabanning, Threlkeld, Keswick at Carlisle on Saturday 19th February 2005 when his bull Cloughead Umpire topped the February Limousin Bull Sale at a mighty 42,000gns, the third highest price ever paid for a Limousin bull in the UK. Another outstanding line-up of bulls from the prolific Cloughead herd saw five bulls in all gross 63,600gns at an average of 12,720gns per bull. All of the Cloughead bulls were sired by the French bred Petunia, a son of Malibu, and imported by Mr. Hutton in 2000.
Cloughead Umpire had, on Friday, won the pre-sale show’s Junior Championship before being placed Supreme Champion by judge Chris Pennie, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys. On pedigree alone this bull brought a lot to admire on both sides. Twelve years ago, Mr Hutton bought two heifers from the noted Daniel Lagautriere herd in France. One of these heifers, Glorieuse, bred Cloughead Jurassic who himself has produced a string of five figure bulls sold at Carlisle. The second heifer, Gascogne, has now produced the 42,000gns Cloughead Umpire. Quite a return on two heifers! The sire, Malibu, Champion of the beef bull class at the French National Show in 2000, is from the admired French herd of Franck Camus. Mr Hutton was naturally delighted with his top price which eclipsed his previous highest auction sale of 24,000gns attained at last May’s Carlisle Sale. “It has been a grand couple of days and all through on a combination of breeding and the bull in himself I think this is probably the best animal I have bred,” he said. The purchasers were well-known breeders Matt & Craig Ridley, who run the noted Haltcliffe herd at Haltcliffe, Hesket New Market, Wigton. In the ring they had to head off some strong competition before securing this end of August 2003 born calf. The complete package of visual appearance, breeding and performance drew them strongly to the bull. “This is an outstandingly good bull,” commented Matt Ridley, “he has class, presence, shape and muscling, and a good loin; he is really hard to fault. He went on: “Espagnol was a cracking bull for the Lagautriere herd and behind him, Tardiff bred some of the best females in France.” Cloughead Umpire was also sold with an excellent Beef Value of LM+26 putting him in the top 10% of recorded Limousin bulls. The junior section of bulls was packed full of quality lots and the 34 sold from these classes averaged an impressive £4953. In all, 124 bulls averaged £3442 with 31 bulls in all (26%) selling at over £4000. The strong trade at Perth earlier in the month meant that in the space of a fortnight, approximately 240 Limousin bulls sold at an average of £3400.
Second leading price of the day went to Glangwden Useful from Chris & Fiona Jerman, Trefeglwys, Caersws, Powys who had stood second in class to the 42,000gns Supreme Champion. A son of the French bred Paul and out of homebred dam Glangwden Primrose, he sold to JW Dent & Sons, Naby View, Lartington, Co Durham for 12,500gns. The Reserve Champion Junior bull, Heathmount Uppercrust, offered by McKinney Bros, 91 Craigadick Rd, Maghera, Co Londonderry made 9,500gns when selling to Ballechin Farms, Ballinluig, Perthshire. This Kype Orkney son and out of Lumbylaw Ogilvy, is listed in the top 100 young Limousin bulls having an EBV of LM39 putting him firmly in the top 1% of recorded Limousins. Cloughead Union was knocked down for 9,200gns. Another Petunia son, this time out of Cloughead Matilda, he joins Mr J Lee’s Morley herd based in Whitfield, Hexham, Northumberland. Another outstanding bull calf, this time a 16 month old Ravageur son and out of Normande Julia, named Normande Urquhart presented by N&E Cruickshank, Cowford Farm, Cleghorn, Lanark sold for 7,500gns to the Maraiscote herd of Mr J Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Newmains, Wishaw. Senior and Overall Reserve Champion, Bailea Ulsterman, made 11,000gns for owner MT Jones, Sennybridge, Brecon, Powys. Messrs Heald & Co, Home Farm, Grove, Notts purchased this April 2003 born Ocelot son out of Bailea Ohdear for their Coachhouse pedigree herd. Senior Reserve Champion, Dyfri Usant, from DG & MJ Edwards & Son, Cilycwm, Llandovery, Carmarthenshire sold for 8,500gns. This Jockey son and out of Dyfri Megan heads to Northern Ireland breeder Mr M Rutherford, Killinchy, Co Down and his herd with the Foxford prefix. Again in the Senior section, Haltcliffe Uncle from Messrs Ridley went under the hammer to Messrs John Logan, Humebyres Farm, Kelso, Roxburghshire. Having stood second in class to the Senior Reserve Champion, this 22 month bull was sired by Sympa and out of Reole, finally hitting the 7,200gns mark. Intermediate Champion Scorboro Universe from JCG Bloom & Son, Decoy Farm, Scorboro, Driffield, E Yorks made 10,000gns when selling to WL & JA Forrester, Higher Heath, Whitchurch, Shrops and joins their Twemlows herd of pedigree Limousins. Winner of the Hallingbury Perpetual Trophy for Best Young Bull at RASE 2004, he is an Elrick Raketeer son and out of homebred dam Scorboro Polka. Reserve Intermediate Champion was Mr R Cruickshank’s Kype Ulysses, sired by Cloughead Lord and out of Kype Morag. Purchaser at 5,000gns was Mr S Whiteford, St Johns Kirk, Symington, Biggar.
