sale dates / sale reports / carlisle 7th may 2005WELSH BULLS LEAD LIVELY CARLISLE LIMOUSIN TRADE Five bulls over 10,000gns – Twenty over 5000gns – 71% clearance – Average of £3109 for 175 bulls It was another ‘grand slam’ day for the Welsh, this time at the May Limousin Bull Sale at Carlisle on Saturday 7th May 2005, with breeders from the Principality taking the top two prices and the Overall Supreme and Reserve Supreme show honours. Leading the Sale at 19,000gns was the much admired Hafodlas Valour, a junior bull from the Roberts of Ysbyty Ifan, Betws-Y-Coed, Gwynedd. A January 2004 born son of Cloughead Royal and out of Fieldhouse Eleanor, he went under the hammer to the pedigree herd of Procters Farm Ltd, Woodhouse Lane, Slaidburn, Nr. Clitheroe, Lancs.
Sarkley Unrivalled from the Pennies, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys sold for 17,000gns. By the renowned sire Nenuphar and out of homebred Sarkley Pollyjen, this August 2003 bull had earlier impressed Show judge Mark Quick, Loosebeare Manor, Zeal Monachorum, Crediton, Devon when crowning him Supreme Champion – so much so that he remained the final bidder purchasing Unrivalled for the pedigree Loosebeare herd.
Overall the sale saw a very lively and confident trade with commercial buyers and pedigree breeders competing fiercely for the first-quality bulls of their choice. Five bulls sold at 10,000gns and over with a further twenty selling at 5,000gns and over. The sale was underpinned by a strong demand that saw 175 bulls sell to realise a clearance rate of over 70% at an average of over £3100. British Limousin Cattle Society Chief Executive Iain Kerr was delighted with the trade and commented, “The strength in depth of this sale confirms the confidence the commercial producer has in the breed. Ease of all-round management coupled with the ability to produce a profitable end product continues to drive further demand for Limousin cattle”. The Reserve Junior Champion and the day’s third top price of 12,000gns went to Glenrock Valiant, another Nenuphar son this time out of Princesse, consigned by Mr SD Illingworth, Howgillside, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie and jointly owned by John McKeen. He was knocked down jointly to Mr J Handley, Gunnerfleet Farm, Chapel Le Dale, Ingleton, Lancs and to W&R Lawson, Stubbsgill Farm, Distington, Workington.
