sale dates / sale reports / carlisle 15th october 2005YOUNG LIMOUSIN BULLS SPARKLE AT CARLISLE8 bulls over 10,000gns – 17 bulls over
5000gns – 111 Bulls Average £3789 A fantastic trade for young bulls led the way in a very confident pedigree Limousin Autumn Show & Sale at Carlisle on Saturday 15th October 2005. Fiercely competitive bidding between commercial producers for bulls of their choice saw a remarkable average of £4,789 for junior bulls, up £416 on the year and £4,002 for intermediate bulls, up £207 on the year. With the older bulls averaging £2,735, the day’s overall trade saw 111 bulls sell to an average of £3,789, up £140 on last year’s corresponding sale. Eight bulls made over 10,000gns with seventeen in all making over 5,000gns. The clearance rate was 55% of the 202 bulls forward.
The prolific Haltcliffe herd of Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket-New-Market, Wigton enjoyed another sizzling day’s trading when they secured three out of the sale’s top five top prices including the lead price of 14,000gns. This was paid for the shapely March 2004 born Haltcliffe Volvo who had been placed Reserve Overall Champion in the previous day’s show. Volvo is sired by the French bred Sympa, the Ridley’s stock bull that previously had sired the 43,000gns Haltcliffe Ullsawater at Carlisle in May 2004. Out of Brontemoor Razzledazzle, Haltcliffe Volvo was purchased for the commercial herd of F Ward, Rogerley Hall Farm, Frosterley, Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham.
In the pre-sale show, Haltcliffe Volvo had teamed up with half brothers Haltcliffe Viper (12,500gns) and Haltcliffe Vannistelrooy (13,000gns) to win the Carlisle Group of Three competition for animals that are by the same sire and are performance recorded.
The show of bulls was judged by John Fieldson, Poplar Farm, Corringham, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. After twenty-two classes and three sections, he awarded the Overall Supreme Championship and Intermediate Championship tickets and to Mr AJ Ewing, Drumbretton Farm, Annan, Dumfriesshire for his March 2004 born bull Sarkley Volcanic. This Moero sired bull had been purchased as a calf, at Carlisle, from breeders Messrs EH Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys. Through the summer Mr Ewing had taken the bull to the Royal Highland where he promptly won the Junior Male Championship and Reserve Overall Male Championship. A very popular champion with great style and shape, Sarkley Volcanic was sold for 13,000gns to joint purchasers RG Dodd, Kirtle View, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Lockerbie and Grange Quarry Ltd, Tudergarth Mains, Tundergarth, Lockerbie. Commenting on their Champion purchase Robbie Dodd said, “We are looking to produce quality suckled calves and this bull has everything: back end, length, size, style, conformation…and the sweetest head!” Industry conditions had seen breeders head to Carlisle with a cautious optimism of what trade they might expect. Beyond the sale they left with a realistically upbeat feeling that the demand for first-quality bulls with shape, width and muscling had been very strong throughout and particularly in runs of intermediate and younger bulls had been quite exceptional. BLCS Chief Executive Iain Kerr reflected the positive mood of breeders. He said: “To increase averages on the year by almost £140 to £3,800 is a tremendous performance by the breeders. Commercial producers have made a clear statement about their long-term vision and confidence in the Limousin breed’s sustained ability to drive the market and provide the necessary quality and added value. In a pivotal time within the industry they are demanding, and are willing to invest heavily in, cattle that they feel will raise the bar in both profit and performance.” Notably, 85% of the bulls sold at Carlisle were performance recorded and of the eight bulls making over 10,000gns, six were in the top 1% of the breed for Beef Value and the other two were in the top 10% as buyers demonstrated a keen eye for breeding and performance information to back their visual assessment.
Beyond the show champion, two further bulls made 13,000gns. The first was Haltcliffe Vannistelrooy, a part of the winning Haltcliffe Group of Three and a class winner in the Junior Section. This embryo calf was sired by Sympa and was born in May 2004. Out of the Broadmeadows Cannon sired Ronick Ricole, this bull sported a top 1% Beef Value of LM+37. Again, bidding was fast and furious before the bull was knocked down to commercial producers WM Reed & Sons, West Biggins, Frosterley, Bishop Auckland, Co Durham.
Also at 13,000gns was Kype Vandamme from R Cruickshank, Little Kype Farm, Strathaven, Lanarkshire. This June 2004 born bull was also a class winner and Overall Champion from thevery strongJunior Section. He was sired by the prolific Cloughhead Lord and is out of the Cannon daughter Kype Nanette. Purchased by the noted pedigree breeders RM Adam & Son, Newhouse of Glamis, Glamis, Forfar, Angus, this much admired bull also had a top 1% Beef Value of LM+39. Completing the top five prices was Haltcliffe Viper from Messrs Ridley who made 12,500gns when selling to Corries Meats Ltd, Crossnamuckley Road, Newtonards, Co. Down. Once again by Sympa, Haltcliffe Viper was the third member of the winning Haltcliffe Group of Three. Sired by Sympa, this April born bull was out of the Heros sired Cloughhead Rowan and carried a Beef Value of LM+33. The purchasers run 14 Limousin bulls on their 300 head commercial suckler herd alongside a small pedigree herd, with all calves finished on farm for their butchers’ enterprise. “In this day and age, commercial buyers need to go for the best quality Limousin crossing sires to pass on the necessary size and shape to their offspring. Visually, this bull was first class and by qualifying as elite for the BQI (Beef Quality Initiative) he had the figures to match,” commented Will Corrie. At 11,500gns was the powerful Aghadolgan Vagus from Raymond Savage, 50 Blakes Road, Castlerock, Co Londonderry. This June 2004 born bull was one of the youngest in the catalogue. He was sired by Sarkley Sebastien, himself a 23,000gns purchase from a Carlisle sale, and is out of the Carse Impact granddaughter Aghadolgan Rowena. With one of the highest beef values in the catalogue at LM+42, this young bull who had won this year’s N.Ireland Limousin Bull Derby was purchased by WR & JM Cowx, Hudscales, Hesket New Market, Wigton, Cumbria. In a tremendous run of young bulls, Heathmount Vicar from the McKinney Brothers, 91 Craigadick Road, Maghera, Co. Londonderry made 11,000gns when selling to J Ward & Sons Ltd, Glen Farm, Hillsborough, Co. Down . This Kype Orkney son was born on 12th May 2004 and carried a big Beef Value of LM+40. Out of the Jupiter sired Heathmount Ruby, this young bull had earlier in the summer been placed as Junior Champion at the Royal Ulster Show. The very next bull in the ring made 10,000gns for Procters Farm Ltd, Procters Farm, Woodhouse Lane, Slaidburn, Nr Clitheroe, Lancs. Procters Vierzon was sired by Greenwell Ronick, a Ronick Member son, and is out of the ten-year-old Greenwell Leiha. This April 2004 born bull by Balnacraig Supreme and out of Homebyres Sage heads to Mr Neill’s 300 head commercial suckler herd – recent winners of the Limousin Scottish suckler herd of the year title. He was sold with a top 1% Beef Value of LM+41. An undisclosed buyer purchased the half brother, Homebyres Vista, this time out of the dam Homebyres Ray again for 8,500gns. This May 2004 junior section bull also had a top 1% Beef Value of LM+34. Mrs R Stevenson, Howgill Foot, Kaber, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria bought Gunnerfleet Volvo, the top priced bull from the senior section, for 7700gns. A February 2004 Silex son and out of first calved heifer, Gunnerfleet Rosey, Volvo was bred and sold by J Handley, Chapel le Dale, Ingleton, Carnforth, Lancs.
