Supreme Champion bull, Brims Vacant - 9,500gns

Brims Vacant

The first official Limousin sale of the year saw a solid trade underpinned by demand from commercial producers with two bulls above the 9,000gns mark and 15 bulls selling at 4,000gns or more. Overall, 95 bulls averaged £3,040 with the sale grossing £288,800. The clearance rate saw 70% of the 137 bulls forward find new homes with almost all of the bulls heading to commercial buyers who readily bid on those bulls with width, growth and natural muscling.

Supreme Champion bull, Brims Vacant exhibited by Messrs W&A Oag, Brims Mains, Forss, Thurso, Caithness took the day’s leading price of 9,500gns when selling to Messrs John Logan, Homebyre, Kelso. Judge David Baillie Snr of Calla, Carnwath had put up this 20 month old bull of exceptional width as his Champion in the previous day’s Show. By Beechlodge Rembrandt and out of Gallaber Paula, Brims Vacant capped a tremendous day’s trading for the Brims pedigree Limousin herd which sold 9 out of their 10 bulls forward to average £3,333.

Burndale Vision - 9,000gns

Going under the hammer for 9,000gns was the powerfully built Reserve Intermediate Champion Burndale Vision brought forward by Redpath Farms, Spylaw, Kelso. This Jockey son is out of Burndale Opel and was bred by Mr JE Henderson, Allendale, Northumberland. New owners are Messrs W Thomson & Son, Hilton of Beath, Kelty.

The day’s third best price of 7,500gns went to Junior Champion and Reserve Overall Elrick Vanguard brought out by Mr M Massie, Auchnagatt, Ellon. By the prolific sire, Ryedale Paragon, Vanguard scanned 94.2mm for muscle depth with an exceptional Beef Value of LM+38. Purchaser was Mr W Campbell, Carnlough, Ballymena for his Spage pedigree herd.

Calla Veron, the March 2004 born bull from judge David Baillie made 7,000gns. By Goldies Onyx and out of homebred dam Calla Octave he sported a beef value of LM+33 putting him close to the top 1% of breed. He heads to the 100 strong commercial herd of the RSPB Loch Gruinart Reserve on the Isle of Islay.

First prize winning bull, Crossdykes Vagabond, was knocked down for 5,800gns. Shown and bred by Mr J Common, Lockerbie, Dumfries, this Redpaths Pelican son who is out of Crossdykes Polly sold to Messrs RW Cameron, Wester Bonhard, Perth.

Normande Visionary from Cruickshank Normande, Cleghorn, Lanark saw a successful bid of 5,500gns from Craigkelly Farm Ltd, Kinghorn, Kirkcaldy secure this Aldwyck Orpheus son out of the dam Normande Illusion.

Three animals hit the 5,200gns mark. First of these was the Reserve Senior Champion Ronick Vortex from Mr R Dick, Mains of Throsk, Stirling. By the renowned sire Bailea Olympia and out of Rhoswen Rio this April 2004 born bull was bought by Culfargie Estates Ltd, Balbeggie, Perth. Also at 5,200gns was Mr J McConachie’s Lethendry Valmet from his Comdale, Grantown on Spey holding. New owners of this Sarkley Pepsi sired bull out of Lethendry Suzie are Messrs JA&JC Beaton, Hillhead of Barra, Inverurie. Anside Viscount brought forward by Mr & Mrs S Irvine, Braehead Farm, Drummuir also went under the hammer at 5,200gns. This first prize winner is a son of Ronick Sidney and out of Anside Pippa and heads to Messrs JA Lambie & Son, Loanhead of Duchally, Auchterarder.

Reserve Junior Champion, Lowabbey Vagabond, shown by Mr & Mrs TW & J Hunter of Upper Brydekirk, Annan secured a final bid of 5,000gns. This 18 month old son of Cloughhead Rattle and out of Lowabbey Nanette was snapped up by MacArthur Brothers, Mid Fleenas, Nairn.

The Female Champion, Carnew Vicky, drew the day’s top price of 2,000gns in the smaller female section. Exhibited by Messrs J&J Aitken, this daughter of Ocean and out of Carnew Shania was purchased by Messrs JS & L Adam, Ardfern, Lochgilphead. The sale also saw a draft from the Westhall Herd of local pedigree Limousin breeder Mr A Fotheringham, Craighall Farm, Forgandenny who had a 100% clearance with 10 females averaging £1170.75.
