‘VANTASTIC’ WILODGE BULL MAKES 42,000GNS AT CARLISLE

3 bulls over 20,000gns – 10 bulls over 10,000gns – 26 bulls over 6000gns
67 Intermediate bulls average £5275 – Overall averages up £1244 – Sale gross up £50,000+

An electric trade for Limousin bulls lit up the Society’s annual May Sale held at Carlisle’s Borderway Market on Saturday 6th May 2006 and sponsored by Merial Igenity.

As well as a top price of 42,000gns, three bulls in all made over 20,000gns, ten in all over 10,000gns and 26 in all over 6000gns.

Once again there was a tremendous demand from commercial producers who bid fiercely for the first quality bulls with muscle, shape, length and good tops. The depth of trade saw 67 Intermediate Bulls average an incredible £5,275. In all, 142 bulls sold averaged a mighty £4353.80, up over £1200 on the year and just a fraction short of the record Limousin average at an official bull sale. The total sale gross was just over £618,000.

The Premier May Limousin Bull Sale was underpinned by a real sense of excitement as Supreme Champion Wilodge Vantastic took home the honours and with it the 42,000gns top price for breeders Christine Williams & Richard Bartle of DA Williams, Lodge Hill Farm, Park Lane, Shifnal, Shropshire. Having been put up as Intermediate Champion and Overall Supreme Champion in the previous day’s Show by judge Mr Steadman Dodd, West View, Temple Sowerby, Penrith, Cumbria, the sale of Wilodge Vantastic was eagerly anticipated.

This powerful and imposing October 2004 born bull weighed in at a tremendous 912kgs at 556 days old. He is the first son of Wilodge Tonka to come up at auction and sported an impressive Beef Value of LM+43 ranking him easily in the top 1% of breed. Wilodge Tonka is by the French sire Oxygene and out of the dam Wilodge Meclaire and himself sold for 30,000gns in October 2003 at Carlisle to Paul Dawes of the Dinmore herd.

Wilodge Vantastic is out of the French-bred dam, the greatly admired Ravenelle, and it was his combination of back pedigree, performance figures and great visual presence that convinced Smiths of Bloxham, Newlands Farm, Bloxham, Banbury, Oxon, to buy him for their pedigree Ironstone herd.

It was an exceptional day’s trading for Christine Williams and Richard Bartle under their Wilodge prefix as four quality bulls offered realised over £62,000. The 42,000gns price is the highest priced bull sold to date by the Wilodge herd who also claimed the distinction of being the first herd to have sold three bulls over 30,000gns at pedigree Limousin bull sales. 42,000gns is the fourth highest price ever paid for a Limousin bull at auction in the UK.

Naturally Christine Williams and Richard Bartle were thrilled with the top price. Commenting, Richard Bartle said: “We always felt that Vantastic was a super bull right from being a young calf. He’s just got that little bit of star quality, that extra bit that makes him special.” Prior to the sale, Smiths of Bloxham had visited Wilodge to view the bull, its mother and four further sisters. Solid homework and the bull himself made their decision straight forward. A delighted Peter Smith had said: “This bull is the real deal. He has got everything, style, carcase, size and just a beautiful Limousin to look at. It’s not often that you get eye appeal, size, shape, figures and breeding all rolled into one bull.” Mr. Smith noted that the bull would be going straight into Cogent to have semen taken with a view to both the domestic market and the export market. Thereafter he will be put to work in the Ironstone herd.

Glenrock Ventura

Two further bulls broke the 20,000gns barrier. Going under the hammer for 24,000gns was the Overall Reserve Champion Glenrock Ventura, a Glenrock Spartacus son and out of the dam Glenrock Saspirella, a well-muscled 23 month old bull who Signet had scored 15 out of 15 for muscle development. Presented by Mr SD Illingworth, Howgillside, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire he was snapped up by Mr J Handley for his Gunnerfleet pedigree herd based at Chapel le Dale, Ingleton, Carnforth, Lancs. Further success was enjoyed by the Illingworths as the red ticket winning Glenrock Victory - by the French sire Rocky and out of the homebred Glenrock Spangle – was purchased for 13,000gns by Mr & Mrs Jones & Daughters, Coedmore Hall, Lampeter, Dyfed.

Clury Vanityfair

Clury Vanityfair was the second bull above the 20,000gns mark as he topped out at the day’s third highest call of 21,500gns. A powerful bull with width and style, he was sired by Sultan and is out of the dam Clury Penance and was brought forward by WF Cruickshank & Sons, Dulnain Bridge, Invernesshire. This first prize winning bull was purchased by an undisclosed buyer.

RS & BA Harker, Overthwaite Farm, Holme, Carnforth, Lancs paid 14,000gns for Carmorn Vandyke, exhibited by C&F McAuley, 22 Carmorn Rd, Toomebridge, Co Antrim, N Ireland. An embryo calf once again sired by Rocky and this time out of Carmorn Penny, he had a tremendous Beef Value of LM+40 putting him easily into the top 1% of breed.

There was a strength in depth to the bulls forward to catch both the pedigree breeder’s and the commercial producer’s eye. Again hitting the 14,000gns mark was the class winner Grahams Voyagerman from R Graham, Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan, Stirling. The first bull for sale by the noted Samy, he is out of the French-bred dam Nicotine, a daughter of Jersey and was bought by Mr P Alexander, Mains of Mause, Blairgowrie, Perth. Reversing the roles, Mr Graham earlier purchased Millington Vascular from Millington Grange Estate, Cold Skin Farm, Millington, York. Sired by Ideal and out of Brockhurst Option, this high Beef Value bull (LM+39) was bought for 9,800gns.

AJ Ewing, Drumbretton, Annan, Dumfriesshire was the buyer of the red ticket winning intermediate bull, Bailea Varley brought out by MT Jones, Heol Senni, Sennybridge, Brecon, Powys. A Marron son and out of Bailea Mhari he went under the hammer for 12,200gns.

Two bulls made 12,000gns: the prizewinning Ronick Valeur from R Dick, Mains of Throsk, Stirling – an embryo calf from the terrific combination of sire Bailea Olympia and dam Ronick Janita who was successfully bid for by JW & ME Fieldson, Poplar Farm, Corringham, Gainsborough, Lincs; and Cloughhead Vulcan, a son of Cloughhead Tommy and out of Cloughhead Rosa, who heads to WM Reed & Sons, West Biggins, Frosterley, Bishop Auckland.

The tenth bull to hit the 10,000gns mark was Mr IG Wilkinson’s Redstroke Valentino from his Baldarroch Farm, Murthly, Perthshire holding. The full French parentage combining the sire Samy with the dam Sage convinced G&N Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat, Dumfriesshire to take home this October 2004 born bull with a Beef Value of LM+34.

The sale continued in positive style for the Wilodge pedigree Limousin herd as two further bulls hit the 8,200gns and 7,000gns mark respectively which meant their top three consignments had averaged over £20,000 apiece! Purchased for 8,200gns by RJ Lawrence, Upper Farm, Far Coton, Market Bosworth, Warks was Wilodge Vontrapp, another Tonka son this time out of Newsham Heron.

Knocked down for 7,000gns was Wilodge Viceversa by Procters Subaru and out of Wiolodge Soblahdi who was bought by JJ Kingan, Laneside Farm, Troqueer, Dumfries.

Week in week out, in markets throughout the country, prime, store and breeding sale trades are consistently topped and underpinned by Limousin bred cattle.
