The day’s outstanding price was the 37,000gns paid for Fieldson Alfy bred and sold by JW Fieldson, Poplar Farm, Corringham, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. A March 2005 born bull, Fieldson Alfy was sired by Gunnerfleet Plunas, a Tunnelby Monkeytricks son that the Fieldsons purchased from Carlisle in 2000 for 7000gns. Out of Eden Natasha, Alfy featured the prolific Broadmeadows Cannon on both sides of his pedigree and carried an excellent Beef Value of LM+34. From one of the strongest line-ups of Intermediate Limousin bulls seen at Carlisle, Fieldsons Alfy came all the way through to win the pre-sale Overall Supreme Championship on the Friday evening. Show judge Brian Jones of the noted Bailea herd, Heol Senni, Sennybridge, Brecon, after seeing nineteen classes and three sections, had no hesitation in giving the nod to his champion and was full of praise for the bull. “He is a terrific bull, just like a Limousin should be. A tremendous carcase animal with a great top and back end, he is also ultra clean. Really he had no faults and pedigree or commercial this is a bull whose progeny should be top earners,” he said.

Purchasing the Champion was David Kelly, Nether Hall Farm Ltd, Monsergh, Kirkby Lonsdale, Carnforth, Lancashire for their growing Netherhall pedigree herd which contains approximately 40 breeding females. Commenting, Mr. Kelly said, “we are trying to put together a first quality pedigree herd and as such we needed to invest in a bull that will put a real stamp on the herd. Alfy is a super bull, very correct, with great presence, wide with a great loin and so good on his legs. We hope to collect semen from the bull on centre and we will also use him on some of our commercial cows to try and breed a few show calves.”

Carlisle 3
Carlisle Group of Three

It was a show and sale to remember for the Fieldsons who also picked up the prestigious Group of Three bulls title from a ring full of ten teams. This title is awarded to the best pen of three home-bred bulls and are performance recorded. As well as the champion, the team featured Fieldson Albert (4800gns) and Fieldson Aussie (5000gns).

Underpinning the day was the quality of the bulls on show with the ringside opinion that breeders had again raised the bar and provided one of the best and deepest shows of bulls seen at Carlisle and specifically at an October sale. British Limousin Cattle Society Chief Executive, Iain Kerr, was delighted with the day’s trading, “It was a fantastic sale and buyers were spoiled for choice such was the in-depth quality of bulls offered to them. Limousin cattle continue to drive the market and, with the added opportunities of a growing export demand, bull buyers know that there is a real price differential when they provide cattle with the carcase quality, consistency and conformation at any weight that is demanded,” he said. “Easy care, easy calving females and a top terminal sire. Limousin is an all round package that practically suits farmers and the modern industry requirements.” Harrison & Hetherington auctioneer David Thomlinson noted the value that was on offer at the sale for buyers. “The depth in the classes was such that a lot of buyers were able to buy very good quality bulls at real value prices,” he said.
