Elrick Bull tops strong Limousin trade at Perth
63 bulls average £4045 - Averages Up £778
- Sale Grosses over £250,000
4 bulls over 10,000gns - 64% clearance
Shape and muscle were again the by-words to success at a buoyant sale
of Limousin bulls, at Perth, on Tuesday 24th October 2006, where the
average jumped £800 per head on the year, to level at a cracking £4247,
for three more sold and a higher clearance rate to boot.
Commercial producers seemed to have the confidence to dig deep for the best of
the bulls on parade, with several of the top priced lots selling into such units.
Demand from pedigree breeders for the top end was underpinned by a strong base
of commercial buyers who bid readily for the quality bulls of their choice. Four
bulls made five figures, with twelve in all making 5000gns or more. Of the four
top prices, three sold to commercial buyers.
“The beef market has improved greatly on the year. Our suckled calf sales
have been up 20% on the year, which has given producers added confidence to buy
quality bulls,” explained auctioneer, David Leggat. “This has been
one of our strongest October Limousin bull sales, which is good to see, and there
was also a real ready trade for quality bulls. People are looking for bulls from
high health schemes and bulls with good figures,” added Mr Leggat.
Iain Kerr, Chief Executive of the British Limousin Cattle Society, added: “This
was another excellent sale with a strength and depth in prices throughout. Again,
the price differential apparent for Limousin bred animals in the store, prime
and breeding rings is really driving an all-round demand. Pedigree breeders and
commercial producers really competed for the quality bulls on offer.”
In a two week period, at Perth and Carlisle, the BLCS Sales have seen 200 bulls
sell for a tremendous average of just under £4500. Clearance rate at Perth
was also very solid at 64%, with 63 bulls of the 99 forward finding new homes.
For the second year in a row, the sale’s top price was achieved
by Michael Massie of MJ Massie, Mains of Elrick, Auchnagatt, Ellon.
The reserve intermediate champion, Elrick Admiral born in April 2005,
lead the way at 12,000gns. Admiral is by Croftlimousin Spencer, a Marron
son who was purchased as a Carlisle show and sale champion in May 2003
for 8000gns. The dam, Elrick Olympia — a Blelack Legend daughter
which goes back to the 11,000gns Crownhead Elegant — has already
produced bulls at 8000gns and 4000gns. Buying the top price was Dr
Elaine Ingram, who has built up the 25-cow Whitelums herd at Whitelums,
Keithhall, Inverurie, in Aberdeenshire. Commenting she said her purchase
was “a superb animal with tremendous width
and length.” Elrick Admiral carried a Beef Value of LM+28.
The top price rounded off an excellent couple of Limousin days for
the Massies. At the Scottish Limousin Region meeting the previous evening,
the 30 cow herd had been awarded the Scottish medium-sized Herd of
the Year. Croftlimousin Spencer was also judged to have produced the
best progeny throughout this year’s Scottish Limousin Herd competition.
The top price was also a personal best Limousin price at Perth …..
so far!
It was also a pretty spectacular Perth Show & Sale for the father
and son team, Roy and Roy Fisher, who own the 180-cow Marlepark herd,
under the name of Castlewigg Farming Co Ltd, Castlewigg Farm, Whithorn,
Newton Stewart. They sold four bulls in all to a top of 11000gns and
an average of a hefty £7035. The previous day they had doubled-up
by winning both the Overall Male Champion rosette and Overall female
Champion rosette under the eye of pre-sale show judge, David Cormack,
Abbotts Close Farm, Sutton Road, Thirsk, North Yorks. It was the senior
champion, Marlepark Ace, who took the top show award and realised the
Fishers’ top price of 11000gns. Marlepark Ace is a son of the
Talent-sired bull, Smithston Rainman, which was bought privately in
2001 from John Smillie. He is the first bull calf born out of the Shire
Handsome daughter, Normande Pamela. Again a bull with a big beef value
of LM+41, this February 2005 born calf was sold to George McFadzean,
president of the Scottish National Fatstock Club, who runs 350 commercial
cows at Woodhead of Mailer, Perth. Commenting on his Champion, show
judge David Cormack said “My Champion was an all-round bull.
He had size, was stylish, long and clean and was very correct. Really
he was a bull you would be delighted to use on pedigree cows.”
The Fishers’ show bull from this year, Marlepark Albert, was
another in demand, selling for 9000gns to quality commercial producers
Cloquhat Farms, Wester Cloquhat, Bridge of Cally, Blairgowrie. This
18-month-old bull stood second in his class at the pre-sale show to
the Reserve Junior Champion. Albert is the first son sold by the Dauphin-sired
bull, Normande Tuscan, which was bought at Carlisle in 2004 for 13,000gns,
and is out of the home-bred Marlepark Tracey. This powerful young bull
carried another good beef value of LM+28.
Fresh form a good trade at Carlisle, JK Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald,
Dumfries, carried on their good form with two five figure prices and
four bulls in all averaging £6772.50. The first of their bulls
to sell at 10,000gns was the fifth-prize Goldies Anchorman, by the
home-bred stock bull, Goldies Terence — an Ideal son out of Emue,
the cow which has produced two 12,000gns sales for the herd. The mother,
Goldies Tailormade, is a full sister to the 12,000gns Goldies Thunderbolt,
a former champion at Perth. Classified elite for the BQI scheme and
in the top 1% for weight, muscle traits and beef value (LM+38), he
was sold, primarily for commercial use to T and M Sinclair, Reaster,
Lyth, Wick, who also runs the Reaster pedigree herd. Goldies Terence — who
a son of had made 11,000gns at Carlisle 10 days ago — was also
the sire of the second 10,000gns sale from the Goldies herd. Goldies
Actionman (LM+30), a May 2005 calf out of the Imperial-sired cow, Goldies
Truffle, was knocked down to Seamus Glen, Ballycastle, Co Antrim, Northern
Ireland.
Another top price from the junior section was the 7800gns paid for
the Reserve Junior Champion, Wilodge Aldiniti, from Christine Williams
and Richard Bartle, Lodge Hill Farm, Park Lane, Shifnal, Shropshire.
Their April 2005 born calf was the first son sold at auction by the
home-bred Wilodge Thumper, who was sold for 31,000gns in February 2004.
Out of Sarkley Odette, and with a beef value of LM+23, Wilodge Aldiniti
went locally when purchased by WS Paterson, Golland, Kinross.
Stephen Duncan, who runs the fledgling Livet herd at Achdregnie, Glenlivet,
Ballindalloch alongside a well-known Blackface sheep unit, received
a terrific 7500gns for his first entry at Perth. This was for Livet
Apache, a bull by the Bailea Imij son, Calla Outlaw, and purchased
by Ballintomb Farms, Grantown-on-Spey. The mother is Newhouse Perm,
a Ronick Member daughter bought privately from the Adams, at Newhouse,
Glamis.
The tone of the sale was set when one of the first bulls through the
ring, Ringway Alpha, from PJ Henshall, Sarkshields, Eaglesfield, Dumfries,
made 7200gns. This powerful rising two-year-old is by the prolific
Ronick Hawk and is out of Ringway Treasure. Fitting into what was a
theme of the day, Ringway Alpha had excellent figures with a beef value
of LM+37 and sold to A Wallace, Claycrop, Kirkinner, Newton Stewart.
A number of Southern Irish farmers had made their way over to Perth
and one of them Mr M Phillips, Doon West Gurteen, Co Sligo paid 7000gns
for Grahams Apache from R & J Graham, Airthrey Kerse Dairy Farm,
Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire. A second-prizewinner, the February
2005 Grahams Apache, one of the first sons sold off the 8000gns Waindale
Prime, is out of Lisette, which bred the former world record-priced
bull, Grahams Samson, which sold for 55,000gns.
At 6800gns, was the Intermediate Champion Taymar Ali from Elgin breeder,
Martin Taylor, Kirkhill Farm, Alves, Morayshire. Securing a personal
best for their 25-cow Taymar herd was the March 2005 son of Fieldson
Officer, out of Brotherstone Iacsa, bought at the Brotherstone dispersal,
at Carlisle. Buyer was Ian Petrie, Woodhill, Ballintuim, Bridge of
Cally.
Archie MacGregor, Allanfauld, Kilsyth, again sold well at Perth when
Allanfauld Amadeus made 6000gns. A January 2005 calf, Amadeus is by
the Imperial son, the 11,000gns Ardbrack Taketime, and is out of the
Bailea Imij sired Allanfauld Mandy. This bull with a beef value of
LM+29 sold to LD Carr, Upper Higham, Higham Ferrers, Northants.
At 5200gns was Newhouse Archdeacon from Messrs RM Adam & Son, Newhouse
of Glamis, Glamis. He was purchased by Campbeltown buyer John Wallace,
Uigle. The one bull entered by the Adams, Archdeacon is by Ronick Shapely
and is out of the homebred cow Newhouse Joy.
Two lots came under the hammer for 5000gns, including the black Limousin,
Towthorpe Black Ambassador, from John Weatherill’s Millington
Grange Estate, Cold Skin Farm, Millington, York. This February 2005
born bull has Canadian bloodlines on both sides, with the sire being
Mapleleaf Keith and the dam being Mapleleaf Tanita out of Belldoon
Miss Windsor. Ambassador sold to the Midlands of England, when purchased
by Joe Adams, Park House, Watford, Northants.
David Orr, Keirsbeath, Mains of Beath, Crossgates, received 5000gns
for Keirsbeath Anchor, from John Wink, Bainshole, Huntly. By the Jockey
sired Dyfri Target, this May 2005 born calf is out of Rhynd Scotia
and was sold with a beef value of LM+38.
Castlewigg Farming Co Ltd’s Female Champion was the April 2005
heifer Marlepark Alison. By the French sire Prestige and out of Montgomery
Lizzy this young lady made the leading female price of 2200gns when
selling to the Livet pedigree herd of S Duncan, Achdregnie, Glenlivet,
Ballindalloch, Banffshire.
