Tremendous Limousin Female Trade sees Grahams Sophie top Breeders’ Sale at 8,500gns

It was another fantastic day’s trading at Carlisle on Saturday 18th November 2006 as the ongoing demand for quality Limousin breeding females continued at pace. The Sale from the Grahams, Lodge, Burnbank and Ioman pedigree Limousin herds at Harrison & Hetherington’s Borderway Mart, Carlisle saw a deep trade and tremendous averages for all classes of the quality stock on offer. A packed ringside of buyers ensured fierce and sustained bidding with many new faces competing with established pedigree herds. The 80 lots sold, almost a total clearance, grossed a remarkable £211,837.58.

Leading the way was the sale from the Grahams Herd of Mr RB Graham, Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan, Stirling. A top-class show of cows, featuring combinations of British and French bloodlines, saw five lots over 7,000gns and eight in all over 5,000gns. Nineteen cows averaged a mighty £4,371 with 13 heifers making £2,568 per head as the Grahams’ 33 lots grossed £124,320.

Topping the sale at 8,500gns was the homebred rising five year old cow, Grahams Sophie. Featuring full French bloodlines, Sophie is by the bull Paon and is out of the dam Parade who sold at the herd’s last production sale for 7,200gns. With a Beef Value of LM+23, Grahams Sophie is a third calver and was sold in calf to Samy, Burke Trophy Winner at the 2005 and 2006 Royal Show and a member of the Nat West Team of Five Champions at the Royal Show 2006. This classy female was purchased by J Gammie who runs the Westpit pedigree herd at Drumforber, Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire.

At 7,800gns was Sibylle, a 2001 born cow by Nounours, a paternal half brother to the noted Nenuphar, out of Nicotine who is sired by the equally noted Jersey. This well bred young cow was purchased by I Brown, Brownwood House, Holbeach, Spalding, Lincs for his Lowgate pedigree herd. Sibylle was sold in-calf to the stock bull Rodeo.

A few lots later, Sibylle’s daughter, Grahams Virtue, was sold to the establishing Elderberry pedigree herd of E Blenkhorn & Son, Elder Farm, Willitoft, Howden, Goole, Humberside for 5,000gns. Sired by Waindale Prime, Grahams Virtue - a two year old heifer - was a prolific 2006 show prizewinner and was one half of the Exhibitor Bred Winning Pair for the Grahams Herd at the Royal Show 2006.

Mixing it with the ladies was the one bull on offer, the Grahams’ stock bull, Rodeo. He made 7,500gns when going under the hammer to an undisclosed buyer. A big, powerfully built bull, Rodeo is October 2000 born and is by the Jersey son Noduleux and out of the dam Lame. Another undisclosed buyer bought Grahams Upperclass for 7,000gns. Born in September 2003, this first calver is by Grahams Poncho, who sold for 20,000gns at the ILC Sale in 2004, and is out of Nicole. She was sold with her Rodeo-sired bull calf, Grahams Badger, at foot and performance figures showing a Beef Value of LM+28 put her easily into the top 10% of recorded Limousin animals.

Selling into Fife was the stylish maiden heifer, Grahams Virtuous, who also hit the 7,000gns mark. November 2004 born by the Bambino sired Icare and out of Rosita, she was knocked down to the Beath pedigree herd of J Thomson, Easterton House, Hilton of Beath Farm, Kelty, Fife.

A Ewing, Drumbretton, Annan, Dumfriesshire paid a handsome 6,200gns for the prolific nine year old French bred cow, Nicole. By Limier and out of Issue, this tremendous breeding cow was sold with her seventh calf at foot, a Samy-sired bull calf, called Grahams Bernie.

The very first calf at foot in the ring, sold separately as an ‘A’ lot, made 5000gns. Grahams April, by the stock bull Samovar was born on 15th December 2005. Out of the Geant sired Maty, this eleven month old heifer calf was purchased by Mr & Mrs DK Wheeler, Goodiford Mill, Kentisbeare, Cullompton, Devon for their Rosecroft pedigree herd.

A first production sale from the Lodge Herd of Messrs WI & AW Callion, Bolfornought Farm, Stirling, in 25 years of breeding Limousins, again met with an excellent trade. 20 lots sold grossed £41,107 with 12 cows averaging over £2,500. Top of the shop was the 7,000gns paid for the cow and calf unit of Ronick Image and her bull calf Lodge Badge. The upstanding thirteen year old cow, Ronick Image, was purchased for 5,500gns by J Ferguson & Sons, 77 Ballyrainey Road, Comber, Co Down, N.Ireland. Image is by Tarvis and out of the famous Broadmeadows Ainsi. Oozing with classy bloodlines, she is a full sister to Ronick Idol and Ronick Iceman, and was sold in-calf to Lodge Herd sire Ronick Urinocco. Her tenth calf, the January born Ocean-sired bull calf, Lodge Badge, made 1,500gns when snapped up by AJ Dalgleish, Mid Murthat, Beattock, Moffat, Dumfriesshire.

Ronick Luke, a Broadmeadows Cannon son, has been a prolific and influential bull for the Lodge Herd. Going under the hammer for 5,000gns was his daughter Lodge Twinkle, a 2002 born second calver out of the Ronick Idol sired Lodge Primadonna. She was purchased in calf to Ronick Urinocco and with her Ocean-sired June born bull calf, Lodge Bouncer, at foot, by the Bollihope pedigree herd of JL & M Wilkinson & Son, Bollihope Farm, Frosterley, Bishop Auckland.

Depth of breeding was again in evidence with the sale of Lodge Jergie for 3,800gns to Bailey Farms Ltd, Crook-O-Lune Farm, Howgill, Kendal, Cumbria. Sired by Uplands Batman and out of the home-bred dam Lodge Fergie by Cloughhead Charlie, this 12 year old cow was sold in calf to Vivaldi and with her ninth calf at foot, the Ronick Urinocco-sired heifer, Lodge Brownie born in August 2006. RA Whitehead, 5 Princes Street, High Walton Road, Walton le Dale, Nr Preston purchased Ballangrew Laurel for 3,000gns. Born in 1995, she is by Balfunning Imperial and out of Ballangrew Hannah. Sold with her March 2003 Ronick Urinocco-sired heifer calf at foot, Lodge Bingo, she was once again sold Pd’d in calf to Ronick Urinocco.

The Burnbank Herd consignment for Messrs D&L Graham, Mains of Burnbank Farm, Blairdrummond, Stirling met with a ready demand for a quality offering of maiden heifers. In all, 11 heifers averaged an excellent £1,975 with six breaking the 2,000gns mark. With an established herd of over 100 females, the Grahams plan to make a heifer sale an annual fixture. Topping their trade at 2,500gns was the October 2005 born Burnbank Ashley. By the prolific Cannon son Cloughhead Jurassic and out of Burnbank Una this heifer, with tremendous shape, was purchased by D & W Hume, 44 Maghereagh Road, Randalstown, Co.Antrim, N.Ireland for their Culnagechan pedigree herd.

Going under the hammer to Perthsire breeders GL & D Reid, South Park House, Muthill, Crieff, were two Grahams Tycoon-sired yearling heifers at 2,300gns and 2,000gns respectively. First of these was Burnbank Amelia, who is out of Balfunning Notion and second was Burnbank Apricot, out of Balfunning Nadia. Grahams Tycoon is a son of Grahams Poncho and is out of the French cow Hardie. He has already sired progeny to 16,000gns. Another Grahams Tycoon daughter, Burnbank Apple, made 2,200gns. New owner of this April 2005 born heifer out of the MCM Goldcard sired Lowabbey Julie, is JE Jack, Carriston Farm, Star, Glenrothes, Fife who run the Kingdom pedigree herd.

Continuing a strong day’s trading, the Ioman Herd consignment on behalf of Mr RH Quayle, Ballavitchell Farm, Crosby, Isle of Man saw two cows hit the 2,500gns mark and 11 overall average a solid £1727. Heading back to the Isle of Man was Shire Snowwhite, an October 2001 born second calver who was sold with her Kype-Sultan-sired bull calf, Ioman Bobet, at foot. By Shire Milton and out of Shire Holly, and sporting a tremendous Beef Value of LM+34, she sold once again in calf to Kype Sultan to the Greeba prefix of R Chadwick, Cronk Breck Farm, Greeba, Isle of Man. MacFarlane Farms Ltd, Quixwood, Duns, Berwickshire also paid 2,500gns for another Shire Milton sired cow, this time the August 2002 born Shire Trudy who is out of Shire Mavis. Sold with her Kype Sultan sired heifer calf, Ioman Brielle, at foot, Shire Trudy’s Beef Value was an impressive LM+38 and she was again offered for sale in calf to Kype Sultan.

The Carser pedigree herd of T Akrigg, Manor Farm, Gray Buckton, Nr. Skipton made two purchases at the 2000gns mark. The first was for the eight year old cow Bellfield Opal sold with her fourth calf at foot, the bull calf Ioman Britain by Greenwell Orlando. Sired by Westhall Lovejoy, Bellfield Opal is out of Bellfield Heather. The Akrigg’s second purchase was Shire Ullswater the November born served heifer. By French sire Genial and out of the Cannon sired Shire Paloma, she was sold as having run with Kype Sultan.
