NEWHOUSE BULLS LEAD CRACKING PERTH LIMOUSIN SALE

Averages up by £700 – 20 more bulls sold – 92% clearance

A cracking day’s trading at Perth saw a terrific demand for Limousin bulls and another breed record mark set.

Newhouse Black Angus

The two highest-priced bulls at 16,000gns and 12,000gns respectively were black Limousin half-brothers from the Newhouse herd of Messrs Robert M Adam & Son, Newhouse of Glamis, near Forfar. Leading the way was Newhouse Black Angus, a July 2005 son of Greenhaugh Utwo and out of Newhouse Sue, which had a Limousin beef breeding value of +29. His 16,000gns sale price was a new UK record price at auction for a black Limousin. Buyer was Welshman G D Roberts, of Llanstyrcanol.

The very next lot at 12,000gns was half-brother, Newhouse Black Alfy, also by Greenhaugh Utwo who was bred by breeder Keith Stewart from Huntly. Out of Newhouse Teak, Alfy was bought by the first quality commercial cattle producer Peter Alexander, of Mains of Mause, Blairgowrie. Mr Alexander had a busy day at the office as he bought six bulls in total. His other purchases included the 8,000gns he paid for the Junior Champion, Walkers Albyn, a June 2005 son of the 55,000gns Grahams Samson and out of Walkers Sionne, from Peter Walker, of Easterside, Dunnottar, Stonehaven.

At 5,500gns Mr Alexander bought Newhouse Ambassador, an August 2005 son of Ronick Shapely and out of Newhouse Maid, again from the Adams’ Newhouse herd. A further 5,000gns was paid for the Reserve Intermediate Champion, Terrace Atomic, a May 2005 son of Kype Sabre and out of Terrace Patricia, from Keith Redpath, of Redpath Farms, Spylaw, Kelso.

It was a good all round day for the Newhouse herd dominated by their black Limousin bulls. Three sold, all sired by Greenhaugh Utwo, grossed a very acceptable total of 36,000gns.

Throughout the sale, four bulls made over 10,000gns with a ready demand from buyers seeing a 92% clearance of the 121 bulls offered for sale. Averages were up on the year a mighty £673 to £3706.88 for twenty more bulls sold. British Limousin Cattle Society Chief Executive Iain Kerr said the trade had been tremendous and was underpinned by the ongoing commercial demand.

"The Limousin breed is providing commercial men with value added, premium-earning cattle and we are seeing that at markets right around the UK. Whether that is in the prime, store or breeding ring the all-round performance and predictability of Limousin cattle is driving a marked premium." Mr Kerr noted that the commercial demand for the breed was reflected in the 35% market share of cattle in the UK, with more than 700,000 cross or pedigree Limousin calves now registered annually with the British Cattle Movement Service.

A trip from across the water provided its reward for Henry McCracken, of Ganaway Road, Ballywalter, Co Down, when he achieved the third highest price of the day at 11,000gns for Seaview Arthur. This May 2005 son of the French sire, Oxygene, and out of Homebyres Minuette, was bought by local commercial man John McAlistair, of West Thomaston, Bannock, Stirling.

Dumbreck Aaron

John David Work and his son, Neil, of Mains of Dumbreck, Udny, sold Dumbreck Aaron, by their noted herd sire Greenbank Star, at 10,200gns. Out of Fleenasnagael Rhona, Aaron was sold locally to Geordie Reid, of Southpark, Muthill, Perth. In the pre-sale show, Dumbreck Aaron had been placed Intermediate Champion by judge Victor Woods, Farm Manager of Greenmount College, Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland's Bernard Mairs, of Hillhead Road, Ballyclare, paid 8,000gns for the stylish Ronick Argos, a July 2005 son of Bailea Olympia, out of a Ronick Janita bred dam, Ronick Rosita, from Ronald and David Dick, of Mains of Throsk, Stirling.

Brian and Matthew Jones, of Bailea Farm, Brecon, Powys, then got 6,800gns for Bailea Auberon, a May 2005 son of Salomon, out of the Greensons Gigolo dam Bailea Mena, who again went commercially to R Templeton, of Carslae, Wigtown, Newton Stewart.

Two bulls made 6,000gns. Christine Williams, of Lodge Hill Farm, Shifnal, Shropshire, hit that mark for Wilodge Aquarius, a June 2005 son of Wilodge Tonka out of Boswells Danette, with a breeding vale of LM+35. He was bought by M and U Campbell, of Glenstockdale, Stranraer. Also selling for this figure was another black bull from the Adams, the June 2005 Newhouse Black Atom, again by Greenhaugh Utwo and out of Mapleleaf Kay, which was bought by Richard Edward, of Letham Mains, Haddington.

Father and son Matt and Craig Ridley, of Haltcliffe, Hesket New Market got 5,500gns for two lots. Haltcliffe Aladdin, a September 2005 son of Goldies Terence, was bought by the Scottish Agricultural College, while Haltcliffe Atlas, an April 2005 son of Sympa out of the French cow Reole, went to M A Steele and Co, of Goddens, Pitroddie, Perth.

Early in the sale, Ian Nimmo, of Bogside Farm, Newmains, Wishaw, saw his Senior and Overall Champion, Maraiscote Abel, a March 2005 Tyddyn Mei son out of the ten-year-old Maraiscote Mollie, sell at the same price to Messrs Paton, of Easter Greenhill, Avonbridge, Falkirk. Tyddyn Mei was purchased at Carlisle for 7600gns and the Maraiscote herd has sold sons from him to a top of 15,000gns.
