HALTCLIFFE BULL TOPS CARLISLE LIMOUSIN TRADE AT 30,000GNS

133 bulls average £4218 - Sale grosses £560,000 – Intermediate bulls average £5276

An extremely solid trade underpinned the Autumn Sale of Limousin Bulls held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday 9th November 2007. With one more bull sold compared to the previous year, overall 133 bulls sold to an excellent average of £4218. Although slightly down on last year’s record-breaking average, this year’s fixture saw averages well above the three year trend and reflected buyers’ immediate and long-term confidence in the Limousin breed despite the current industry difficulties. Five bulls made over 10,000gns with 25 in all making over 6,000gns. In the intermediate section 43 bulls sold to average a tremendous £5,276, up £245 on last year’s trade. Overall, the clearance rate was an acceptable 62%.

Trends of the day saw Scottish and Welsh buyers out in numbers with practically all of the bulls sold at over 6000gns heading to one of these home nations. Ringside opinion was that this was a high quality show of bulls, one of the best seen at an October sale, with the intermediate section particularly strong. Bulls that were visually strong and accompanied with good EBVs were easily sold.

Haltcliffe Banker

It was from the intermediate section that the day’s top price of 30,000gns emerged in the shape of Haltcliffe Banker from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket New Market, Cumbria. A son of the prolific French sire, Sympa, Haltcliffe Banker is an April 2006 born bull out of the dam Cloughhead Rowan who goes back to Broadmeadows Cannon. Sporting an impressive Beef Value of LM+40 which places him easily in the top 1% of breed, he was purchased by EH Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys for their Sarkley pedigree Herd. Sympa sons have sold at 43,000, 28000, and 24,000gns respectively for the Haltcliffe herd to date.

Ampertaine Bravo

Making it a top price double on the day for Sympa breeding was the March 2006 born Ampertaine Bravo at 24,000gns. Show judge, Mr Andrew Ewing of Dumbretton Farms, Annan, Dumfries had selected Ampertaine Bravo as his Intermediate and Supreme Champion and this was reflected in the successful 24,000gns joint bid on behalf of BT Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries and Castlewigg Farming Co Ltd, Castlewigg Farm, Whithorn, Newton Stewart. Bred by James McKay, 88 Kilrea Rd, Upperland, Maghea, Co Londonderry, Ampertaine Bravo was once again sired by Sympa and is out of the privately bought dam Kype Ultra. He is no stranger to show success, having won the Junior Champion and Overall Male Championship at both the Royal Ulster Show and All Ireland Derby respectively in summer 2007. His Beef Value was a whopping LM+43. In the February sale at Carlisle this year, Mr McKay had sold another Sympa son for 29,000gns.

Commenting on the show of bulls, Judge Andrew Ewing said: “This was an outstanding show of bulls especially in the Intermediate section and my Champion was a bull with great presence with all the Limousin characteristics I wanted – natural muscling, growth and good mobility. He is the complete beef type animal and ideal both for pedigree or commercial use.”

British Limousin Cattle Society Chief Executive, Iain Kerr, was also satisfied with the day’s trading: “This was a very good sale, coming as it did at a difficult time for the industry. Commercial cattlemen know the performance of the breed in producing first-quality calves and providing a high standard of breeding females. This trade is indicative of the long-term confidence that pedigree and commercial cattlemen have in the Limousin breed.”

Hudscales Bigboy

Show judge Andrew Ewing’s Reserve Overall Champion got the nod for his size and overall correctness and was the aptly named Hudscales Bigboy from Messrs Cowx who run 80 pure cows at Hudscales, Hesket New Market, Wigton . Junior Champion & Reserve Overall, Bigboy sold for 19,000gns to the pedigree Newhouse Herd of RM Adam & Son, Newhouse of Glamis, Forfar, Angus. Again, prices reflected the Beef Value (LM+39) and the combined breeding of the Cowx 11,000gns stock bull Gunnerfleet Talker and the homebred dam, the Broadmeadows Jiver daughter Hudscales Pansy. The Judge said he was particularly pleased that both his Champion and Reserve Champion would be going into top pedigree herds.

Anside Barnabas

The first prize winning Senior bull, Anside Barnabas made 14,000gns when going under the hammer to commercial buyers C Birrell & Co, Barnboard, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire. Exhibited by Stephen Irvine, Braehead Farm, Drummuir, Banffshire, Barnabas is by the 10,000gns Fleethill Talisman and out of the home-bred Bewick Orbit sired dam Anside Ultra. This was the Irvine’s top price Limousin bull to date. Also at the 14,000gns mark was another Northern Irish bred bull Ashhollow Bombshell. This first prize winning bull was brought forward by Mr & Mrs J Callion, Shaneragh, Dromore, Co Tyrone. With a Beef Value of LM+38, this long, shapely Rocky son out of the dam Lyvennet Paris was the Reserve Male Champion in this year’s All Ireland Derby and heads to W Dick & Sons, Mains of Throsk, Stirling for their noted pedigree Ronick Herd.

Before purchasing the day’s top price EH Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys sold their Senior Champion for 9500gns. This well bred bull is a Greenwell Major son out of the Ronick Gains grand-daughter, Sarkley Ola, herself the 2000 Royal Welsh Supreme Limousin Champion. Staying in Wales, the new owners are RW & SG Williams, Glansawdoe, Llangadog, Carmarthenshire. Again at 9,500gns was Dyke Ben Nevis from JR MacGregor, Dyke Farm, Milton of Campsie, Glasgow. In the top 1% of the breed for all growth and muscle traits and with a 500 day weight of 948kg, Ben Nevis is by Ardbrack Taketime and out of the Ronick Hawk sired Dyke Pat. Described as the best breeding cow in the herd Dyke Pat has previously had calves make 7000 and 6800gns respectively. He was purchased jointly by H Cockburn & Partners, Kingside, Leadburn, West Linton and Hartside Farms, Tintoside, Symington, Biggar, Lanarkshire.

The Dyke prefix was once more to the fore when Dyke Bingo, another Ardbrack Taketime son and this time out of the Haltcliffe President sired Dyke Uist made 9,000gns when selling to DR Owen & Son, Sandilands Farm, Tywyn, Gwynedd. Dyke Bingo had earlier stood as Reserve Intermediate Champion. Two further bulls, all with red tickets, hit the 9,000gns mark. Burndale Blizzard was brought out by JE Henderson & Sons, Burn Tongues, Allendale, Hexham, Northumberland who run 12 pure cows and have 80 sucklers. February 2006 born, this Sympa son out of the Jockey sired Burndale Tamsin, was snapped up by J & J Wilson, West Cairnglass, Gollanfield, Inverness. 9,000gns was the price paid for Clury Bonbon bred by WF Cruikshank & Sons, Clury Farm, Dulnain Bridge, Inverness. With all-French breeding behind him, notably the sire Snoopy and the dam Raquette, Clury Bonbon was knocked down to J Gordon & Co, Waterside Farm, Bridge of Alford, Aberdeenshire.

Selling pedigrees at Carlisle for the first time was Mr J Rafferty, Scaffog Avenue, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh who has a pedigree herd of 30 females. His first sale was one to remember when he made 8000gns of the well muscled Raffertys Buster. A March 2006 born son of Rocky out of the Ronick Idol sired Ronick Rinkle, Buster also headed to Wales and pedigree purchaser TW&MW Price & Morgan, Tyrosser, Llanafan, Builth Wells, Powys.

Messrs John Logan, Humebyres, Kelso, Roxs, had a top price of 8000gns for their March 2006 born Ronick Hawk son Homebyres Balfour. Another bull featuring a good Beef Value of LM+36, Balfour is out of Homebyres Unicity which is by Balnacraig Supreme.

TW& J Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Brydekirk, Annan had enjoyed an extremely successful summer show season with Lowabbey Baccarat, an April 2006 born bull that had won first prize rosettes at both the Royal Highland and Gt. Yorkshire shows. Sired by Cloughhead Rattle and out of the homebred Lowabbey Liz, this bull wen to the noted commercial home of the Page Brothers, Lodge Farm, Elkington, Northampton.

Also hitting the 8000gns mark was the Reserve Junior Champion, Hartsideanew Boumsong, an April 2006 born bull from JM Thompson, Townfoot, Melmerby, Penrith. This bull is by the Ronick Member son Greenwell Ronick and is out of the Cannon sired Eden Senorita. Purchasers were the pedigree breeders A and C Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, Swarland, Morpeth.
