sale dates / sale reports / carlisle 1st / 2nd May 2009STRONG AND DEEP LIMOUSIN TRADE AT CARLISLE SEES 175 BULLS AVERAGE £5,500Ampertaine & Tunnelby bulls sell for top prices of 20,000gns – The trade for Limousin bulls was strong and deep at a packed Borderway Mart, Carlisle for the 26th British Limousin Cattle Society Show and Sale on Saturday May 2nd 2009. Underpinned by a big demand from commercial beef producers from all parts of the United Kingdom, 175 bulls were sold to average £5,502. This represented fifty more bulls sold on the year and an increase in average of £454. When the dust finally settled on what is traditionally the largest Limousin bull sale of the year, just under 10% of the bulls sold had made 10,000gns or more with 77 in all selling for 5,000gns or more. The terrific demand for bulls ensured breeders enjoyed a highly satisfying sale clearance rate of 90% with 175 bulls of the 194 forward finding new homes. Bulls sold grossed £962,500 with the female sale held the previous evening pushing the total Limousin sale gross over the £1 Million mark. This is believed to be the highest grossing pedigree sale ever held at Borderway Mart. Underlining the depth of the sale was the fact that the day’s lead price was 20,000gns - achieved twice for Ampertaine Commander and Tunnelby Cymbellene respectively. The Overall Supreme Champion at the pre-sale show came in the form of the December 2007 born Ampertaine Commander from WJ & J McKay, 88 Kilrea Road, Upperlands, Maghera, Co Derry. Having come through a particularly strong class, this December 2007 born bull won the Intermediate Championship before being given the Championship nod by pre-sale show judge Martin Conway, 26 Meenagorp Road, Plumbridge, Co Tyrone.
Ampertaine Commander is an AI calf got by Glenrock Ventura, a Glenrock Spartacus son who sold for 24,000gns to the Gunnerfleet herd at the May 2006 Carlisle Sale. Described by James McKay as “the best bull I have bred to date,” Ampertaine Commander is out of one of the herd’s best cows, Ampertaine Arabella, who is by the prolific Sympa and is the first dam calved to that bull in the herd. Previously she had secured Interbreed Championship honours at the Royal Ulster Show at Balmoral. Pre-sale judge Martin Conway described his Champion as “a very modern Limousin bull,” adding: “This bull has plenty of shape and muscle and a great spring of rib. He has tremendous locomotion and is the type of bull that would ideally suit both pedigree and commercial use.”
The Ampertaine enterprise presently comprises of 65 pedigrees and 55 commercial cows in all. In recent years the herd has enjoyed consistent success selling bulls at Carlisle at 29,000gns, 24,000gns, 13,000gns and now 20,000gns. This is the second time the herd has won the Supreme Championship at Carlisle following on from the Sympa-sired Ampertaine Bravo in November 2007. Purchaser of the Champion was Willie Barron for his Barrons pedigree herd based at Morrow Edge Farm, Burnhope, Durham. Mr Barron had first spotted the bull on the Thursday prior to the Show. Looking to replace his stock bull, Mr Barron’s priority was easy calving. “As a one man band, I must have an easy calving bull. The dam line of Commander is very good and his sire is an easy calver,” added Mr Barron. The Barrons herd comprises 27 pedigree cows all due to calve in 2009 and Willie Barron thinks Commander will both compliment the bull he has just finished using as well as taking the Barrons Herd forward. Offsetting some of his purchase was the 6,900gns he had earlier received for the November 2005 born Rossignol sired Barrons Apollo from EJ & A Fox, Elsdonburn, Kirknewton, Wooler, Northumberland.
Rounding off a great day for the McKays, Ampertaine Coolcat, by the 29,000gns Ampertaine Abracadabra and out of Kype Tiffany sold for 12,000gns to AC Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm, Whitton-le-Wear, Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. This bull, December 2007 born, stood fourth in a strong class that had also produced the Ampertaine herd’s Overall Supreme Champion.
The day’s joint top price of 20,000gns was for Tunnelby Cymbellene from the Cheshire-based herd of Miss EA Thompson, Beechwood, School Lane, Onneley, Crewe. This stylish first prize winning bull came out of the senior section. He is by the Saphir son Hafodlas Abel and is out of the Ronick Cosmos cow Tunnelby Otteline. Following a deal agreed in the collecting pen only moments before the sale, this September 2007 born bull sold jointly to DA & RS Harker, Overthwaite, Carnforth, Lancs together with DBD & CA Edgar, Shire Farm, Ousby, Penrith, Cumbria who run the Overthwaite and Shire herds respectively. Commenting, Doug Edgar said: “This is a bull full of promise with typical breed characteristics, tremendous lenghth, top line, legs and feet.” He will be used on Mr Edgar’s 60 strong female herd and Mr Harker’s herd of over 50 breeding females. Miss Thomson’s herd is no stranger to success. In 1997, the Ronick Cosmos sired Tunnelby Monkeytricks sold for 10,000gns at Carlisle whilst in 2003 Tunnelby Scallywag won the prestigious Royal Show Supreme Limousin title for exhibitor John Oakes. Tunnelby Cymbellene was brought out on behalf of Miss Thompson by Alun Roberts who had bred the sire, Hafodlas Abel - a Saphir son - purchased for the Tunnelby herd for 3,000gns at the May 2006 Youngstock Sale. Mr Roberts had visited the Tunnelby herd in March of this year just prior to the closing date for entries for the May sale and he backed up Miss Thompson’s decision to bring him to Carlisle. “Since seeing him in March, he has come on and matured nicely but was not overdone. The Saphir breeding clicked well with the Tunnelby cow, one of the few animals that Miss Thompson had retained after her major reduction sale in July 2005 having been bid to 4,000gns,” said Mr Roberts. Commenting on the sale, a delighted BLCS Chairman Jim Bloom said: “This has been a fantastic sale with a high clearance rate underlining the demand from predominantly commercial producers. From the spring Society and club sales right through to today, the Limousin trade has been very strong and demonstrates again that the breed is the first choice as an all-round easy calving, easy care breed that is highly efficient, marketable and leaves a profitable carcase,” he said.
Mynach Coodoo at 16,000gns secured ED Griffiths & Co, Cilgryman Fawr, Cwmfelin-Mynach, Henydgwyn, Carmarthenshire their highest sale price to date eclipsing their previous mark of 12,000gns paid for Mynach Axle. Mynach Coodoo won the second show class of the day and was placed Overall Reserve Senior Champion. Featuring a depth of breeding, Mynach Coodoo is sired by Rhonllwyn Vandal, the 2008 Royal Welsh Show Interbreed Champion and out of the Oedipe homebred daughter Mynach Samsara. Rhonllwyn Vandal was purchased for 4,000gns at the BLCS Sale in Brecon in November 2005. The consistent Mynach herd won the Best Extra Large Herd in the South Wales Herd Competition in 2008. Purchaser for their Norman pedigree herd was ES Norman, Little Orton Farm, Little Orton, Carlisle. Commenting, Eric Norman said: “I couldn't fault the bull at all; he was stylish, powerful with a good top line, great width across his plates, perfect locomotion and with an excellent loin.” He plans to use him across his 125 pedigree and 20 commercial cows. Happy with his purchase, a good day all-round for Mr. Norman was rounded off for when he sold Norman Correze for 9,500gns. Norman Correze, is by the French AI bull Vivaldi who featured throughout the sale, and is out of Stacey Shelly. This August 2007 born bull sold to noted commercial man and show calf producer AJ & JA Powell, Grove Farm, Knighton, Powys.
Making their mark at 15,500gns was the July 2007 born Dinmore Charmer from the Herefordshire based herd of P Dawes, Kipperknowle Farm, Dinmore Manor. This first prize winner is an embryo calf by the increasingly prolific Wilodge Tonka, the Oxygene son sold for 30,000gns at Carlisle in October 2003. Dinmore Charmer is out of the Brockhurst Liskeard sired Lumbylaw Oath. With a Beef Value of LM+32, this bull was snapped up by Chris Bustance for his Moulton pedigree herd based at Wimberley Hall Farm, Stonegate, Weston, Spalding, Lincolnshire. In February 2008, another Wilodge Tonka son, Dinmore Bandit, sold for 28,000gns at Carlisle.
The Senior Champion, Siddall Casanova, came from the day’s first class and was exhibited by Messrs G&P Long, Millbrow Farm, Skelwith Bridge, Ambleside, Cumbria. In a remarkable turnaround, Siddall Casanova was purchased at the October 2008 Carlisle Sale for 1,800gns from breeder Mr P Fletcher, Top O’ Th’ Hill Farm, Birch, Heywood, Lancs. Some six months later and with a Championship behind him, this impressive bull, who Mr. Long said had had great potential, was sold for 14,500gns to Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Aspatria, Wigton, Cumbria. Siddall Casanova is by the AI sire Ionesco and out of the Ronick Hawk granddaughter, Siddall Tara.

Dynamite’s figures featured muscle, growth and Beef Value (LM+38) all in the top 1% of the breed.
Redpath Farms also bid successfully to the same money when snapping up the one and only Black Limousin bull forward, Bailea Black Caviare, for 12,000gns. Their first visit proved a fruitful one as they also secured the Reserve Junior Male Championship with the February 2008 born Netherhall Desmond. This embryo calf featuring shape and muscle is another by Sympa and is out of Parkhouse Angel, a female the Kellys purchased at Carlisle for 16,000gns.
