The Red Ladies Limousin Derby held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday 18th December brought the 2009 British Limousin Sale Season to a spectacular close with a top price of 38,000gns, eight animals at 8,000gns or more, and an all-breeds record average of over £4,400 for maiden heifers.

Trueman Duet 38,000gns

Trueman Duet

Christmas arrived a week early for the Savage Family of father Henry and his sons Henry Jnr, Benedict and Phelim, Altnamackin, Newry, N Ireland who secured the day’s top price for their pre-sale Show Champion, the September 2008 born maiden heifer Trueman Duet. Combining visual appearance and depth of pedigree, Trueman Duet is an AI calf by the prolific Sympa and is out of the Nenuphar-sired Trueman Acoustics. In September this year she had placed first in her class at the N.I. Calf Spectacular and was described by Henry Savage as ‘the best female ever to have been bred by the Trueman herd.’ Paying the top price was the Banbury-based Smiths of Bloxham, Newlands Farm, Milton Road, Bloxham, Oxon for their Ironstone pedigree herd. Frequent purchasers of high quality pedigree Limousin stock, the Trueman heifer was one of five purchases on the day for the Smiths of Bloxham team.

The Savages have been breeding pedigree Limousin cattle for twelve years and the forward aim is to grow the Trueman herd to twenty five cows. Established in 1997 with the purchase of foundation females from the Spage and Lynderg herds, the herd presently comprises of 12 pedigree cows put to AI sires. It won the Best Small Herd in the 2009 N Ireland Club Herd Competition. As well as the day’s top price, the 38,000gns figure is a new Northern Irish record for a pedigree Limousin, male or female, and is the second highest price ever paid for a maiden heifer in the UK. Speaking after the sale, Henry Savage said: “I’m absolutely delighted; this is a fantastic breakthrough for the herd and obviously a big lift. Duet has always been an outstanding calf but you never can anticipate such a sale.”

Pre-sale judge was Mrs Vicky Maynard of the Columbpark Herd, Caseberry Farm, Bradninch, Exeter. Commenting on her Champion, Mrs Maynard said: “Trueman Duet was a very stylish heifer with size and power. She is very feminine, is correct, with a lovely head and big ears, a truly wonderful heifer. The overall quality in the show was extremely good and I was delighted with the final championship line-up.”

A much-anticipated sale catalogue, encompassing both the Red Ladies and a sale of pedigree Weaned Calves, duly delivered with the day’s total sale gross amounting to over £407,000. Four animals made over five figures, with eighteen in all making 5,000gns or over. As well as the Northern Irish record, the 52 maiden heifers sold for a record average of £4,421, surpassing last year’s record figure by £1,100 for eight more heifers sold. The 65 animals sold in the Red Ladies Sale grossed £289,133 up by £93,900 on the previous year. Purchasers comprised of both new and established breeders from all corners of the UK, and from Southern Ireland.

Millington Davina 28,000gns

Millington Davina

The day’s second top priced animal was Millington Davina, a first prize winner, from Millington Grange Estate, Millington, York who sold for 28,000gns to the newly establishing Sportsmans pedigree herd of Boden & Davies Ltd, Mellor Hall Farm, Mellor, Nr. Stockport, Cheshire. Millington Davina, a February 2008 born heifer, arrived at Carlisle with a combination of depth of pedigree, performance figures and an impressive 2009 show record. An embryo calf, Millington Davina is by the French sire Mas Du Clo and is out of Brockhurst Option whose dam is the noted Ronick McAinsi. In 2009 Davina, who has a Beef Value of LM+39, picked up a host of show titles with the most notable being when she was crowned Supreme Limousin Champion at the final Royal Show. At the same event she won the Junior Interbreed Championship and the Reserve Supreme Overall Interbreed title. In 2008, the Millington Herd secured the top price at the corresponding sale when selling Millington Choice, a full sister of Millington Davina, for 10,000gns. Owners John & Pauline Weatherill only decided after much consideration to enter Millington Davina just before the close of entries to the sale. A full sister is retained amongst the pedigree herd of 40 females and a full brother is due to be offered at the February Spring Bull Sale in 2010. The herd’s top sale price to date was an additional ‘present’ for Mrs Weatherill who happened to be celebrating her birthday on sale day! Earlier, Boden & Davies Ltd had purchased the in-calf Whinfellpark Clover for 9,000gns from Messrs A Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith, Cumbria. A big March 2007 born heifer, Whinfellpark Clover is French bred being sired by Regal and out of Toison. She was sold as being PD’d in calf to the 50,000gns Whinfellpark stock bull Wilodge Cerberus.

Another daughter of Haltcliffe Ullswater, the September 2007 born Calex is out of the Jacot granddaughter Glangwden Ulex.

Dunnamona Davina 9,000gns

Dunnamona Davina

Smiths of Bloxham were also the purchasers of the day’s Reserve Supreme Champion Dunnamona Davina for 9,000gns from John D Rainey, Kilrea, Co. Derry, Northern Ireland. Bred by IS Jobb, Fintona, Co. Tyrone, this April 2008 born heifer is by the noted Sauvignon, a previous Supreme Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show, and Male Champion at the Sima Show in Paris. Dunnamona Davina is out of Ashmara Angelina and her pedigree goes back to the famous Greensons Gigolo. This was the first time Northern Irish bred animals had placed both Champion and Reserve at this longstanding female sale fixture. The Northern Irish connection continued when Mr & Mrs J&A Callion, Shaneragh, Dromore, Co. Tyrone, sold Melbreak Dazzle for 8,000gns to Smiths of Bloxham. This September 2008 born heifer is another by the prolific Sympa and is out of the Malibu sired Ashhollow Twinkle who bred the Reserve Champion at the 2008 Red Ladies Show & sale. Rounding off the Smiths of Bloxham purchases was Mynach Diamante who made 6,500gns for ED Griffiths & Co, Cilgryman Fawr, Cymfelin Mynach, Carmarthen. January 2008 born, Mynach Diamante is by the herd’s stock sire Sable who has sired progeny sold up to 12,000gns. She is out of the homebred Sarrasin-sired Mynach Amethyst.

A good day for the Melbreak herd of Mr & Mrs J&A Callion was rounded off when they sold Melbreak Delight for 6,400gns to the Cawfield herd of Messrs TW Oliver, Cawfields, Haltwhistle, Northumberland. Melbreak Delight is an April 2008 born daughter of the noted Cannon son Ronick Luke and is out of Sarkley Tarriane. Sarkley Tarriane is a full sister to the 28,000gns Sarkley Arriane.

RECORD FROZEN EMBRYO PRICE SET
Continuing the trend of the day, a new all-breeds record price for frozen embryos was set when 4 Grade A embryos from Miss C Williams T/A DA Williams, Lodge Hill Farm, Park Lane, Shifnal, Shropshire made 2,200gns apiece. The breeding of the embryos combined the 42,000gns Wilodge Vantastic with the 24,000gns Sarkley Bellola. Sarkley Bellola is the dam of Wilodge Dallaglio who made the top price of 30,000gns at the Society’s October 2009 Sale at Carlisle. Purchaser was DW & EME Armstrong, Highfield Farm, Jolly Tar Lane, Coppull, Chorley, Lancs who runs the Gritstone pedigree herd.
