72,000gns HALTCLIFFE BULLS LEADS AS 176 LIMOUSIN BULLS SELL TO AN ALL-BREEDS RECORD AVERAGE OF £6045

Sale grosses £1,064,025 – All-breeds centre record average - Highest number of bulls sold at a February Sale – 81% clearance rate – 18 bulls at 10,000gns or more – Averages up by £357 for 45 more bulls sold - 72,000gns top price is second highest ever at UK auction

Driven by a terrific demand from commercial beef producers, the British Limousin Cattle Society Sale of Limousin bulls at Carlisle held on Saturday February 13th saw 176 bulls sell to an all-breeds centre record average of £6045. The top end of the pedigree trade saw the prolific Haltcliffe herd of Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Hesket-New-Market, Cumbria lead the sale at 72,000gns for their May 2008 born bull Haltcliffe DJ.

The 176 bulls traded, giving an 81% clearance, represented a record number of bulls sold at a February fixture at Carlisle. Eighteen bulls in all made over 10,000gns with ten within that number selling to commercial producers. The depth of trade resulted in the first Limousin sale to gross over £1 Million with 55 junior bulls leading the sections at an average of £6,512.

Haltcliffe DJ
Haltcliffe DJ - 72,000gns

At the top end of the sale the 72,000gns paid for Haltcliffe DJ, the pre-sale show champion, was the second highest price ever paid at auction in the UK standing only behind Haltcliffe Vermount, also from the Ridleys, who made a world record 100,000gns when selling at the corresponding sale in 2006. Bay a strange quirk of fate, both Haltcliffe DJ and Haltcliffe Vermount were born on the date of 22nd May. Haltcliffe DJ is by the 42,000gns sire Cloughhead Umpire and is out of the French bred female Radio. Radio, a Nenuphar daughter who was purchased as a heifer from the noted herd of Camus Huberson whilst the Ridleys were re-stocking the Haltcliffe herd following FMD in 2001. Joint purchasers of Haltcliffe DJ were Procters Farm Ltd, Woodhouse Lane, Slaidburn, Clitheroe, Lancs, and Nether Hall Farm Ltd, Nether Hall, Mansergh, Kirkby Lonsdale, Carnforth, Lancs, for their Procters and Netherhall pedigree herds. David Kelly of the Netherhall herd said, “We bought Fieldsons Alfy a few years ago and he has been a super bull for the herd. Haltcliffe DJ we think will be a really good match for Alfy’s females. He will put some size in but keep the natural shape and width. The bull was absolutely outstanding and we are delighted to get him”. The Netherhall herd presently comprises of 50-60 breeding pedigree females. Sharing these sentiments was Gary Swindlehurst, Farm Manager at Procters Farm who also commented that Haltcliffe DJ would be used on the Haltcliffe Vermount females within the Procters herd of sixty females.

At the pre-sale show, judged by noted Aberdeenshire breeder Harry Emslie, Kinockie, Mintlaw, Peterhead, Haltcliffe DJ had been placed as Intermediate section Champion before moving on to take the Overall Supreme award. Commenting on his popular Champion, Harry Emslie said; This was an outstanding bull, one of the best seen yet from the Haltcliffe herd. He caught my attention as soon as I saw him for his power and scale coming towards you, and really filled my eye walking away. He was the real deal!”

Haltcliffe Dynamo
Haltcliffe Dynamo

The Ridleys’ second five-figure bull on the day, Haltcliffe Dynamo, realised 15,000gns when knocked down to ML Howatson, Ty Newydd, Nantglyn, Denbigh, Denbighshire for their largely commercial herd of 90 suckler cows together with a pedigree herd of some 15-20 cows. Well-known in showing circles, Glyn Howatson commented: “We picked out this bull as he’s suitable for both pedigree and commercial use. He has a nice head, great length and a very good top line and will be ideal for producing show calves as well as for the pedigree side.” An embryo calf, this first prize winner is by Haltcliffe Vermount and out of Cloughhead Romany and has a Beef Value of LM+27.

The principal feature of the day was the strength and depth of the trade driven by commercial producers and this was picked up by British Limousin Cattle Society Chief Executive Iain Kerr who said, “every credit must go to the breeders who are so commercially minded and bringing such a high standard of bulls forward that are meeting the market requirements. There was a tremendous level of quality right through the catalogue and a great standard of bulls available for every budget and for every job. Limousins are easy managed, easy calving, easy kept and fed, and that makes for good economics. Less cost in labour and feed and a premium in the market place for a quality and repeatable carcase is very attractive”, he said. “The bulls forward had growth, width and thickness, and sold readily. The pedigree prices are an important bonus on top to what was an outstanding commercial sale of bulls”. In a notable part of the sale, bulls in numbers sold to all parts of the UK. Accounting for fifteen bulls at an average of £3900, was the Crofters Commission, Inverness, who were purchasing for their crofters cattle improvement scheme. Farm manager John Cowan and head stockman David Matthew were selecting bulls on a combination criteria of both performance EBVs and high health status. In all, fifty nine bulls in the sale (34%) sold into Scotland.

Plumtree Deus
Plumtree Deus

Cloughhead Umpire, whose sons had previously sold to a top of 25,000gns, was the sire of the day’s top two sale prices of 72,000gns, and the 35,000gns Plumtree Deus from first time vendor Paul Cairns, Tollerton Lane, Tolerton, Notts. Remarkably, Plumtree Deus was the first bull bred by Mr. Cairns whose herd, established in 2006, presently consists of eight breeding females. This May 2008 born bull had caught many ringsiders eye and in the pre-sale show he had duly won his class and placed Reserve Overall in the Senior Section. With a depth of breeding Deus (which means God in Latin), was sired by Umpire and is out of the Sympa female Bankdale Amber which was purchased by Mr Cairns for 7000gns at the Limousin red Ladies Sale at Carlisle in November 2006. Making it a memorable debut for the Plumtree herd was purchaser CV Lewis & Sons, Garth Vaughan, Cyfronydd, Welshpool, Powys for their Garyvaughan pedigree herd which comprises of 70 cows and 30 heifers coming through. Commenting on his purchase Mr Lewis said, “This bull had tremendous conformation, shape and muscling with plenty of breeding behind him. He has a great temperament and when we picked him we were prepared to buy him. He is very much a bull to take the herd to the next level. His first stop will be Cogent for semen collection as we are keen to put him straight onto the Semenstore”.

Grahams Dublin
Grahams Dublin

Two classy bulls from the herd of Mrs & Mrs R&J Graham, Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan, Stirling made the third and fourth top prices of 26,000gns and 21,000gns respectively. At 26,000gns was the October 2008 born junior bull Grahams Dublin. Standing second in what was arguably the strongest show class of the day, Grahams Dublin is by the Ideal 19 son Millington Vascular and is out of the Grahams Tycoon sired Burnbank Adele. A powerful young bull with tremendous width, Dublin was purchased by Mr Allan Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Clifton, Penrith, Cumbria for his Whinfellpark pedigree herd of 120 females that has been built to date mainly around a French-bred female base. The Whinfellpark herd was established in 2001 and as well as the pedigree Limousins, the farm carries 3200 ewes and has 700 acres of arable land.

Grahams Dynamite
Grahams Dynamite

From the same vendors, Grahams Dynamite sold for 21,000gns sold to the noted commercial producer Peter Alexander, Mains of Mause, Blairgowrie, Perthshire. A July 2008 born bull, Grahams Dynamite came to Carlisle with a prodigious show summer behind him. This bull placed as Junior Champion and Overall Male Reserve at the Royal Highland where he also won the Beefbreeder Interbreed. He is by the multi-title winning Graham’s stock bull Samy and is out of the cow Lisette who herself was the mother of Grahams Samson the ILC Champion bull in 2004 and the then world record priced Limousin at 55,000gns. At the pre-sale show, Garhams Dynamite won his class before picking up the very strong Junior Section Championship. A Beef Value of LM+42 and a Muscle Depth of +8.8 provided this bull with a combination of performance figures, visual appeal and depth of pedigree. Mr Alexander runs a team of over 20 pedigree Limousin bulls on a breeding herd of 800 Limousin blooded cows, which is thought to be the largest commercial Limousin enterprise in Britain. Later in the day Mr. Alexander paid 5600 for Newhouse Dynamo from Robert M Adam & Son.

Loosebeare Declan

The prolific Wilodge herd of DA Williams, Lodge Hill Farm, Park Lane, Shifnal, Shropshire paid 20,000gns for the fifth leading price, Loosebeare Diego. By the noted Rainbow Simon, whose first 14 male progeny had sold at Carlisle to average £8,459, this represented the top price to date for one of his sons. He is out of the dam, Loosebeare Soldy, a Broadmeadows Cannon daughter, and sports a Beef Value of LM+42. A cracking line-up of bulls from the 90 strong female herd of Messrs EW Quick & Sons, Loosebeare Manor, Zeal Monachorum, met with a strong trade. Another by Rainbow Simon, Loosebeare Declan, who is out of Loosebeare Topera, carried a Beef Value of LM+35 and heads to G & W Halliday, Crawthat, Tundergarth, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire for 10,000gns. Gorrycam Diarra
Gorrycam Diarra

A much anticipated bull coming to the sale was Gorrycam Diarra from David Kenwell, Main Street, Dromore, Co Tyrone and he did not disappoint when making 18,000gns. A first prize winner in the strong junior class, Gorrycam Diarra was bred by S Reel, 17 St Patricks Park, Cullyhanna, Newry, Co. Down. September 2008 born, he is sired by the AI bull Sympa who featured strongly through the catalogue, and is out of the Cloughhead Lord daughter Honeylodge Ava. Another bull with tremendous muscle and width, and a Beef Value of LM+36, Diarra heads to the high profile Ironstone pedigree herd of Smiths of Bloxham, Newlands Farm, Milton Road, Bloxham, Banbury. Smiths of Bloxham also purchased Rathkeeland Dylan later in the sale from Crawford Brothers for 4200gns.

This bull oozed class in his pedigree being by the 42,000gns Wilodge Vantastic and out of the 22,000gns Requin sired Bailea Umelia. With a Beef Value of LM+38, Ironstone Diego was sold jointly to the commercial producer Gary Bell, Haas Grove Farm, Haas Loaning, Lockerbie, and to the Fairywater pedigree herd of Andrew ewing, Drumbretton, Annan, Dumfriesshire. Ironstone Diego was spotted by Andrew Ewing whilst visiting Smiths of Bloxham at the Limousin Society’s Open Day held there in July last year. Again, the combination of bloodlines, figures and visual appeal carried through to sale day itself. Gary Bell runs approximately 30 commercial cows and is very much concentrating on the quality end with an ambition to produce top show calves. The Fairywater pedigree herd consists of 40 pedigree females and the bull will also be used within the farm’s fifty strong suckler herd. Early plans, pending the usual entry requirements, are to collect semen from the bull on-station.
