Bulls available on the Semenstore again featured prominently at what was
a record breaking autumn sale period for the Limousin breed in October 2009.
In just over 72 hours, 204 Limousin bulls were sold, at Carlisle and Stirling
respectively, to an average of £5369 and a total gross in excess of £1
Million. Carlisle lead the way with 143 bulls selling at an all-breeds centre
record average of £5735, surpassing the previous mark set at the Limousin
Sale in February this year.
The top price was the 30,000gns paid for the Wilodge
Vantastic son, Wilodge
Dallaglio from Miss C Williams, Lodge Hill Farm, Park Lane, Shifnal,
Shrops. Joint purchasers were KD Harryman, Keskadale Farming, Newlands
Valley, Keswick, Cumbria together with Messrs M&W Richardson, Gatesgarth
Farm, Buttermere, Cockermouth, Cumbria who run the Keskadale and Honister
pedigree herds respectively.
They described Wilodge Dallaglio as: “a bull of outstanding quality,
full of muscle with plenty of style, good mobility and thickness right
through – a true modern Limousin.” As well as the bull’s
visual appeal, the purchasers admired his back pedigree which comprised
Oxygene, Cloughhead Lord and Ronick Luke. Bred by Christine Williams,
Wilodge Dallaglio is an embryo calf by the prolific 42,000gns Wilodge
Vantastic and out of the dam Sarkley Bellola, purchased as a maiden heifer
in 2007 for 24,000gns. July 2008 born, this fifteen month old bull was
one of the youngest in the catalogue. Much admired, he had collected
the Overall Male Limousin Championship and Elite Beefbreeder titles at
the 2009 Royal Welsh Show. Here, Dallaglio followed the eventual Champion,
Kaprico Davelle, right through the classes to gain the Reserve Overall & Junior
Championships with Judge, Mr Bob Adam of the Newhouse herd, praising
his exceptional width and muscling.
In February this year another Wilodge
Vantastic son, Goldies Comet, topped
the Spring Carlisle Sale when selling for 23,000gns. Wilodge
Vantastic has been a consistent best seller on Semenstore and is available for £20
per straw.

The 18,000gns Junior & Supreme Champion at Carlisle, Kaprico Davelle,
was presented by AK & C Stafford, Stanford Drive, Houghton-Le-Spring,
Tyne & Wear. This represented the top price at sale to date for the
Kaprico Herd which comprises just 6 breeding females but already has
a Royal Show & Burke Trophy Champion to its name in the shape of
the 2006 winner, Kaprico Ultimate. The youngest bull in the sale, Kaprico
Davelle has a Beef Value of LM+23 and is sired by Wilodge
Tonka and out
the Greensons Gigolo daughter, Kaprico Ravelle. He was first spotted
back in 2008 by eventual purchaser Mr John Logan, Humebyres Farm, Kelso,
Roxburghshire when judging the North East Herd Competition where the
Kaprico Herd won the Small Herd Competition for the sixth time. The 30,000gns
Wilodge
Tonka is another consistent best seller on Semenstore
and his semen is available at the price of £10 per straw. Tonka’s
sons include the 42,000gns Wilodge
Vantastic and the 50,000gns Wilodge
Cerberus.
A strong commercial demand for Limousin bulls, which saw averages rise
on the year, was the story behind a solid trade at the British Limousin
Cattle Society’s Perth Bull Sale through United Auctions held at
the newly completed Stirling Agricultural Centre on Monday 19th October
2009. A 74% clearance saw 61 bulls go under the hammer to average £4509
with 20 bulls in all selling for 5,000gns or more with a top price
of 12,000gns.
Kinnahaird David from JP Clark Ltd, Kinnahaird Farm, Contin, Strathpeffer,
an AI son of the 35,000gns Grahams
Unbeatable, whose semen is available
on Semenstore at £35
per straw, sold for 6500gns. Out of Allanfauld Saffron, Kinnahaird
David was sold with a Beef Value of LM+32 to MJ MacTaggart, Uiskentuie
Farm, Bridgend, Isle of Islay. Grahams
Unbeatable who has sold sons at auction up to 10,500gns
has a Beef Value of LM+44.
