23/02/2010

Two sons of Semenstore bulls make over 20,000gns with five in all making over 10,000gns.

Driven by a terrific demand from commercial beef producers, the British Limousin Cattle Society Sale of Limousin bulls at Carlisle held on Saturday February 13th 2010 saw 176 bulls sell to an all-breeds centre record average of £6,045. Bulls available through the Semenstore again featured strongly led by the Millington Vascular son, Grahams Dublin, who made 26,000gns.

The 176 bulls traded, giving an 81% clearance, represented a record number of bulls sold at a February fixture at Carlisle. Eighteen bulls in all made over 10,000gns with ten within that number selling to commercial producers. The depth of trade resulted in the first Limousin sale to gross over £1 Million with 55 junior bulls leading the sections at an average of £6,512.

Two classy bulls from the herd of Mrs & Mrs R&J Graham, Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan, Stirling made the third and fourth top prices of 26,000gns and 21,000gns respectively. At 26,000gns was the October 2008 born junior bull Grahams Dublin. Standing second in what was arguably the strongest show class of the day, Grahams Dublin is by the Ideal 19 son, Millington Vascular, and is out of the Grahams Tycoon-sired Burnbank Adele. A powerful young bull with tremendous width, Dublin was purchased by Mr Allan Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Clifton, Penrith, Cumbria for his Whinfellpark pedigree herd of 120 females.

From the same vendors, Grahams Dynamite sold for 21,000gns to the noted commercial producer Peter Alexander, Mains of Mause, Blairgowrie, Perthshire. A July 2008 born bull, Grahams Dynamite came to Carlisle with a prodigious show summer behind him. This bull placed Junior Champion and Overall Male Reserve at the Royal Highland where he also won the Beefbreeder Interbreed. He is by the multi-title winning Graham’s stock bull Samy and is out of the cow Lisette who herself was the mother of Grahams Samson the ILC Champion bull in 2004 and the then world record priced Limousin at 55,000gns. At the pre-sale show, Grahams Dynamite won his class before picking up the very strong Junior Section Championship. A Beef Value of LM+42 and a Muscle Depth of +8.8 provided this bull with a combination of performance figures, visual appeal and depth of pedigree. Mr Alexander runs a team of over 20 pedigree Limousin bulls on a breeding herd of 800 Limousin blooded cows, which is thought to be the largest commercial Limousin enterprise in Britain.

With a Beef Value of LM+38, Ironstone Diego was sold jointly to the commercial producer Gary Bell, Haas Grove Farm, Haas Loaning, Lockerbie, and to the Fairywater pedigree herd of Andrew Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan, Dumfriesshire. Ironstone Diego was spotted by Andrew Ewing whilst visiting Smiths of Bloxham at the Limousin Society’s Open Day held there in July last year. Again, the combination of bloodlines, figures and visual appeal carried through to the sale day itself. Gary Bell runs approximately 30 commercial cows and is very much concentrating on the quality end with an ambition to produce top show calves. The Fairywater pedigree herd consists of 40 pedigree females and the bull will also be used within the farm’s fifty-strong suckler herd. Early plans, pending the usual entry requirements, are to collect semen from Ironstone Diego on-station.
