Fermanagh-based Crawford Brothers have launched the first Limousin male sexed semen in the world from their prolific Show winning bull, Sauvignon.
In partnership with Cogent, the world leader in sexed semen technology and the UK’s largest bull stud, this development is expected to have a significant impact for export markets. In 2007, Sauvignon became the first Limousin bull in the world and the first beef bull in the UK from which female sexed semen was made available. His straws have been successfully exported throughout the world.
Both male sexed semen and female sexed semen priced at £40 per straw are now available for purchase through the semenstore.co.uk website.

Raymond Crawford said: “This is another very exciting development for us and one which we have been working on for some time. Each straw has on average over 90% male sperm and it gives breeders and commercial producers the opportunity to buy world-class semen to improve the profitability of their family business.”
In March 2007, Sauvignon took the Male Championship title at the SIMA/SIMAGENA Show held in Paris. As well as winning his class and standing Male Champion, Sauvignon also took the Champion Carcase Bull award. An outstanding winner, he was also the 2007 Supreme Beef Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show and the Overall Limousin Champion at the Royal Welsh Show in 2006. Now seven years old, he was imported from France by Crawford Brothers in 2006.
Female sexed semen as well as conventional sexed semen – priced at £30 and £10 respectively – have also been made available to the semenstore.co.uk website from the Limousin bull, Procters Duvalier, on behalf of Paul Dawes, Kipperknowle Farm, Dinmore, Hereford. He joins Milbrook Alistair, another bull with sexed semen sales already established through the website.
