Limousin Breed secures all five Interbreed titles

Samson sired Clonlara Valance wins Overall Interbreed Championship

Clonlara Valance, exhibited by Crawford Bros, Maguiresbridge, Co Fermanagh, enjoyed a spectacular 2010 Royal Ulster Show at Balmoral Wednesday-Friday 12-14 May 2010 when securing the Supreme Limousin title, Individual Interbreed, Interbreed Team & Interbreed Pairs honours.

Progressing from the cow in milk with calf at foot class, this Limousin female went on to take the Female Championship and Supreme Overall on the Wednesday under Judge Mr. Paul Byas, Middledale Farm, Kilham, Driffield, East Yorkshire who was faced with a very strong line-up of Limousin animals numbering 84 forward representing the largest entry of any beef breed.

Bred by Colin Hogg, Erinagh, Clonlara, Co Clare in the Republic of Ireland, the six-year-old Clonlara Valance is sired by the 55,000gns Grahams Samson and out of the Eleazar daughter Daragh Noelle and was shown with her Sauvignon-sired bull calf at foot. Mr. Byas commented: “This was a super working cow suckling a strong calf and she had plenty of width, length and good locomotion. It was a particularly strong show of breeding females and the Limousin show as a whole was underpinned by very commercially relevant pedigree cattle.”

Raymond Crawford, who, together with brother Stephen and father Herbie run the Rathkeeland, Newlittlemount and Erne pedigree herds comprising 60 cows, said: “We bought Clonlara Valance privately in 2009 and this was her first show outing. Although this is our sixth Limousin Supreme Championship win at Balmoral, it’s the first Individual Interbreed Championship success and we are delighted to have won it in what is the Crawford Brothers’ 30th Anniversary year. The Royal Ulster title is the pinnacle of showing in Northern Ireland and it is truly a great honour to win both the Limousin title and the Overall Interbreed awards.”

Keadyview Eileen

Grahams Samson was sold at Carlisle in February 2003 for 55,000gns, a figure at the time that was a world record for a pedigree Limousin bull. Since then, Grahams Samson semen has sold around the world and progeny sold in the UK at auction have reached the 18,000gns mark. Grahams Samson semen is available on the Semenstore at £50.00 per straw.

Later on the show day Clonlara Valance doubled-up and took the Individual Interbreed title with the most votes from all the assembled breed judges. Then on the Friday, Clonlara Valance teamed up with Sylvandene Defoe and Milbrook Celine to win the Interbreed Group of Three title.

The Limousin Junior Female Champion and Reserve Junior Overall, was the stylish Keadyview Eileen, consigned by Barney O’Kane & Sons, Garvagh, Coleraine. This young heifer doubled up in the prizes when she stood as one half of the Junior Interbreed Pairs award. The Interbreed title was the icing on the cake for Barney O’Kane with Keadyview Eileen who is sired by the 29,000gns Ampertaine Abracadabra and out of Carmorn Babe.

Ampertaine Abracadabra was also the sire of the Reserve Junior Male Culnagechan Eagle, shown by Mr. Derek Hume, Randalstown, Antrim. This February 2009 bull is out of the Cloughhead Lord daughter Kype Vanessa.
