Heavy rain showers and horrendous under foot conditions may have fore shortened this year’s Royal Show at Stoneleigh but it could not stop the Limousin breed from dominating the beef entries and securing a clean sweep of the ‘Blue Riband’ Interbreed titles.
It was sunshine in particular on David & Mary Cormack, Abbotts Close Farm, Sutton Road, Thirsk, N. Yorks, who secured the Overall Supreme Limousin Championship with their outstanding homebred four-year-old cow, Newstart Upsydaisy, who was shown with her classy September 2006 born heifer calf, by Greenhill Viper, at foot. The Limousin title was the path to the Interbreeds where Upsydaisy lead a memorable hat-trick of Interbreed titles. After winning the Overall Individual Interbreed Supreme title, in front of judge Mr Emyr Jones, Graig Goch, Nebo, Llanrwst, Denbighshire, the prestigious Burke Pair Interbreed Trophy followed and the day was rounded off when the Interbreed Team of Five was awarded to the Limousin entry.
Prolonged rain prior to the show had made exhibiting on the traditional lawns impossible. Therefore for the first time in recent memory the Limousin judging took place on a hastily arranged ring on a concrete area of the show ground. The showing conditions could not detract from the quality of the entry presented before the Limousin judge for the day, Mr. Ian Callion, Bolfornought Farm, Stirling who with his wife Wendy, runs the Lodge pedigree herd.
From a superb cow in milk with calf at foot class, emerged Newstart Upsydaisy a four year old cow by the Tarvis sired Ronick Iceman and out of the Ronick Gains sired Rivermead Rosebud. After securing the female championship, Upsydaisy eventually went head to head with the Male Champion, the rising six-year-old bull Samy from Mr & Mrs R&J Graham, Airthrey Kerse Farm, Bridge of Allan, Stirling. With two outstanding animals in front of him Mr. Callion deliberated before awarding the Supreme Championship to Newstart Upsydaisy. Despite the conditions a large crowd roared their approval for what was a fantastic moment of delight and emotion for the husband and wife Newstart team. The judge was full of praise for what he described as ‘a truly outstanding Limousin female’. He said, “What a fantastic animal, she has just got everything you would want in a Limousin female. Presented absolutely at 12 o’clock she just looked perfect on the day. Tremendous volume, size, shape, very correct with great legs, feminine with lots of character and with a super calf at foot. She was the real deal and a worthy champion”. Ten days earlier, Upsydaisy had been part of the winning Interbreed Team of Four at the Royal Highland Show where she had also been judged as Best Limousin Cow.
At both shows, Upsydaisy had been shown by David Cormack who after each success contacted his wife Mary who unfortunately could not attend the show. The win was all the more poignant as the cow’s grandmother, Uplands Daffodil sired by Ami, had died at the ripe old age of 18 at the begining of June this year. Upsydaisy, a second calver, has previously won classes at the Royal as both a yearling and as a two-year-old. In 2004 at the National Limousin Show, held during the ILC, she had also been placed Reserve Junior Female Champion.
Samy duly secured the Overall Reserve Supreme Championship a title he had also won at this year’s Royal Highland Show. He was however to move on to secure his own special place in the pantheon of Limousin and Royal Show history. Teaming up with the Champion, Samy and Newstart Upsydaisy formed what proved to be a memorable and unstoppable Burke Trophy Pair. Burke Interbreed judge David Barker, Manor Barn, Heathfield, Taunton, Somerset had no hesitation in awarding the title to the pair he described as having “perfect balance, presence and outstanding quality”. This was the third year in a row that Samy had been part of a winning Limousin Burke Trophy Interbreed Pair having previously teamed up with Ronick Money and last year, Kaprico Ultimate and it is the first time a bull of any breed has completed what is a truly outstanding feat. Breed judge Ian Callion was quick to praise Samy: “Again, Samy was in tremendous condition, he has plenty of power, is very correct and has great locomotion for both his size and age. Winning the Burke three years in a row shows that his quality and consistency has stayed at an extremely high level”. Samy, one of the most prolific show winning bulls in British rings is now a coming six-year-old bull. He was bred by Msr. Lagautriere, and is sired by Loriot out of Nova,
Due to the final day of the show being cancelled, the Team of Five Interbreed was brought forward to the Tuesday afternoon. Breed judge Ian Callion had selected what was, in many ringsiders opinion, one of the strongest teams ever presented at the Royal Show. “All the way through, the team matched in type, quality and balance and just oozed class. The team reflected the quality coming through from the classes and was actually quite straightforward to pick”. This view was backed up by the Team of Five Interbreed judge Mr. Jim Buchanan, Hayton Castle, Aspatria, Wigton, Cumbria who gave the nod to the Limousins with the Belgian Blues placing Reserve. The Limousin team comprised of animals from five different exhibitors which was indicative of the breed’s strength in depth. As well as Newstart Upsydaisy and Samy, the team consisted of the Reserve Female Champion Ardlea Tammy from Peter Smith, Smiths of Bloxham, Newlands Farm, Milton Road, Bloxham, Banbury, Oxon; Westside Avril, the winner of the third heifer class, from S& GA Potter, Westside, Topcliffe, Thirsk, N. Yorks; and Rosecroft Versace from Mrs A Wheeler, Goodiforde Mill, Kentisbeare, Nr Cullompton, Devon, the winner of the fourth heifer class.
Ardlea Tammy is an October 2002 born cow bred in Southern Ireland by Dan Tynan and is by the French sire Lino and out of the French dam Lilas. The very correct Rosecroft Versace, born in November 2004, is also by Lino and is out of another French cow Elite-Iszet. The homebred Westside Avril represented Steven Potter’s first red ticket within the Limousin section at the Royal Show. This October 2005 heifer is an AI calf by the French sire Imperial and is out of the noted dam Broadmeadows Jiji by Broadmeadows Cannon out of Broadmeadows Didi. After a show full of breed success, the Limousn judge, Ian Callion said; “The quality of the classes was superb and a great credit to the exhibitors. I feel fortunate to have judged when such a high standard has been presented. It has been a great honour to judge the Royal Show, it has always been an ambition and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience”.
Through the Royal Show, overall sponsor of the Limousin section was the Banbury based Smiths of Bloxham. With their breeder’s hat on they also enjoyed a tremendous day in the show ring. As well as being part of the winning interbreed Team of Five, and having the Overall Reserve Female award, they also secured the Junior Male Championship, Overall Junior Championship and Reserve Junior Interbreed title with their January 2006 born homebred Ironstone Bomber. This young bull with size and power is French bred being sired by Uniprix and out of Torpedo. Two further class wins were secured with the Opera sired cow Ironstone Vogue and the April 2006 born bull Ironstone Brandy by Unesco and out of the 50,000gns heifer Bailea Umandy.
At the Royal Highland Show, Tomschoice Braveheart, from Messrs JM & SP Cooper, Hill Top Farm, Lane Foot Road, Dacre, Harrogate had stood as Junior Male Champion.
This Ronick Member son was back in the prizes at the Royal Show where he followed Ironstone Bomber through from his class to secure the Overall Reserve Junior Male and Junior Championship awards. A January 2006 born calf he is out of the Normande Judge sired Tomschoice Universal.
The Royal Highland Show Limousin Champion, Grahams Butterfly, was also shown at the Royal Show and again met with success by winning both the second heifer class of the day and the Junior Female Championship. Shown by Mr and Mrs R&J Graham, this January 2006 heifer is by Samy and is out of the rising five year old Grahams Trendy sired by Grahams Poncho. Messrs JM & SP Cooper picked up the Reserve Junior Female award for another Ronick Member sired animal, the January 2006 born Tomschoice Bethan. This maiden heifer, which stood second in its class to Grahams Butterfly is out of the Rake Terence sired Tomschoice Unity.
n the commercial section, Limousin sired cattle were again dominant winning both the Champion and Reserve Champion prizes. Well know commercial showman Jim Hollingsworth from Denbighshire took the top prize with the fourteen-month-old ¾ bred heifer, Katherine. This heifer is by Rossignol and is out of a Muirhouse Lagonda sired dam. She was purchased for 5,800gns from Messrs Richardson, Ghyll House, Dufton, Appleby. Standing Reserve was the pure Limousin steer, Bailea Bling Bling, purchased by Mr Hollingsworth from MT Jones, Sennybridge at the Show Potential Sale in Brecon.
