From the largest breed entry within the beef section, and from a strong section of young and mature bulls, Sauvignon was awarded the Overall Limousin Championship by the day’s judge, well known breeder and former British Limousin Cattle Society Chairman, Mr Peter Henshall, Sarkshields Farm, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie, Dumfries. The Overall Reserve Championship was awarded to Wilodge Vantastic from Smiths of Bloxham, Newlands Farm, Milton Road, Bloxham, Banbury, who had followed the Champion all the way through from his class.
With the Limousin Championship safely tucked away, Sauvignon then went head to head against the other breed champions and in front of all the breed judges in the open scoring spectacle of the Overall Interbreed. A tremendous score featuring a few perfect ‘20’s’ was enough to ensure that the Overall Interbreed title was won by the hefty margin of twelve points. In March of this year, Sauvignon had travelled to Paris and the SIMA/SIMAGENA Show where he secured the Male Championship and the Champion Carcase Bull award. Through the summer shows, Sauvignon has also placed Reserve Male Champion at the Royal Highland and stood second in his class at the Royal Show to the eventual Male Champion and Overall Reserve. For good measure, Sauvignon was also in the news earlier this year as the first Limousin bull in the world to have sexed semen made available from. Purchased in France, this September 2001 born bull is by Mexicain and is out of Manon. Once again the Limousin classes were kindly sponsored by Ripon Select Foods Ltd and Mrs Sarah Cooper duly presented the Doug Lewis Perpetual Challenge Trophy to Raymond and Stephen Crawford. Commenting on the Champion, judge Peter Henshall said: “Sauvignon displays tremendous width from his shoulder right through his loin and into the hind quarter. He moves very well for such a big bull and in what were difficult showing conditions today. Overall, the standard of Limousins forward was very high and it was particularly pleasing to see such a good show of young bulls at this time of year.” Despite bright and sunny weather, conditions underfoot were still decidedly ‘good to soft’ at best as a consequence of the heavy rain in the weeks leading up to the show.
Overall Reserve Limousin Champion was the October 2004 born Wilodge Vantastic from Smiths of Bloxham. Sired by Wilodge Tonka and out of the French dam Ravanelle, Wilodge Vantastic had placed Champion at the May 2006 Carlisle Sale before being purchased for 42,000gns from breeders DA Williams, Lodge Hill Farm, Park Lane, Shifnal, Shrops. The Reserve Championship also added to the Smiths of Bloxham summer show success with the Ironstone herd having previously won Junior Champion and Reserve Female awards at the Royal Show as well as featuring in the victorious Interbreed Team of Five.
Yorkshire breeders featured strongly in the day and it was from Topcliffe, Thirsk that the Overall Female Champion and Junior Female Champion appeared in the shape of Westside Avril from S & GA Potter. This October 2005 born heifer is an AI calf by the French sire Imperial and is from a tremendous female line being out of the noted dam Broadmeadows Jiji by Broadmeadows Cannon out of Broadmeadows Didi. In the space of a fortnight, this heifer has won the Great Yorkshire Limousin Female Championship, was first in her class at the Royal Show where she was also part of the winning Interbreed Team of Five. On the second day of the Great Yorkshire, Avril was also part of the winning Junior Interbreed Team. Of his Limousin Female Champion, judge Peter Henshall noted: “This is a super heifer, very correct, not extreme, sweet and again moved extremely well.” Westside Avril was later to place Overall Reserve Junior Champion.
Mr G Harvey, Balfron, Glasgow made his trip south worthwhile once again when his heifer Harveys Atique placed as Overall Reserve Limousin Female Champion, Reserve Junior Female Champion and was part of the winning Junior Interbreed Team. In a parallel to the bull classes, Atique had followed the Champion Female all the way through from her class. Born in July 2005, Atique is by the prolific Ronick Hawk and is out of the Cloughhead Lord sired Harveys Tique. The dam bloodline is particularly strong and deep going back to both Ronick Unique and Talent. Again, capping a super summer, Harveys Atique had also been a class winner at the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston in June.
Tomschoice Braveheart, a young bull from local breeders JM & SP Cooper, Hill Top Farm, Lane Foot Road, Dacre, Harrogate enjoyed a terrific show when winning the Limousin Junior Championship and along with it the Best Junior Exhibitor Bred Male, the Best Animal Under Two Years Old and Best Animal at Show by a North East Limousin Breeders’ Club member. He also featured in the winning Junior Interbeed Team. prolific summer winner, Braveheart’s titles now include the Gt. Yorkshire Junior Championship, Royal Highland Reserve Junior Championship and Royal Show Reserve Junior Championship.
Tomschoice Braveheart is by the Ronick Idol son Ronick Member. A January 2006 born calf he is out of the Normande Judge sired Tomschoice Universal. A super day for the Coopers was rounded off when the Tomschoice herd went on to win the Group of Three animals and the Pair of Animals by the Same Sire.
Pushing Braveheart all the way was the Reserve Junior Male Champion, Lowabbey Baccarat from TW & J Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Brydekirk, Annan, Dumfriesshire. This April 2006 born bull is by the Jordy sired Cloughhead Rattle and is out of the MCM Goldcard sired Lowabbey Liz. In winning his class, Baccarat pipped Lowabbey Boxer, a March 2006 bull from the same home and also by Cloughhead Rattle. Lowabbey Baccarat also won Interbreed honours as one of the winning Junior Interbreed team of four. The Junior Team Interbreed Championship was judged by David Thomlinson, Park View, Scaleby, Carlisle.
The opening day of the show had also seen another Limousin Championship one-two in the Commercial Beef Section. Of the foremost commercial shows in the year, this section was once again well supported with large numbers of first quality animals. Under the judging eye of Lincolnshire butcher Mr DA Wright, Boston, the Champion Steer a ¾ Limousin born in February 2006 and exhibited by Farm Tech UK Ltd went on to win the Overall Title. In Overall Reserve position was the heifer champion, again a June 2006 born ¾ Limousin exhibited by well known Welsh showman BE Williams, Sennybridge, Powys. This heifer had been purchased in February at Brecon Market for a centre record 7,100gns.
