CRAWFORDS “VICTORIEUS” AT ROYAL SHOW AS LIMOUSIN BREED DOMINATES

  • Victorieus wins the Individual Interbreed Championship and is Part of Winning Burke Trophy Interbreed Pair

  • Limousins make Modern-Day History by the Winning Burke Trophy for the Fourth Consecutive Year

  • Burke Winners Victorieus & Vigot both from the Crawford Brothers

Three year old Limousin cow, Victorieus, from The Crawford Brothers, Rathkeeland, Maguiresbridge, Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland swept the boards at the 2008 Royal Show which, despite a reduced entry due to Bluetongue movement restrictions, was brimming with quality Limousin cattle. Having been awarded Supreme Champion in the Limousin section on the Thursday, this true Limousin Queen was crowned Individual Interbreed Champion on the Saturday. To cap a tremendous day, she went on to take the Blue Riband Burke Trophy for the Champion Interbreed Pair when teaming up with her stable mate and Reserve Male Champion the three year old bull, Vigot.

When tackled, the Judge - and former Scotland Rugby International - Mr John Jeffrey, Kersknowe, Kelso, Roxburghshire gave his reasons for choosing his Champion Burke Trophy Pairing: “It was the dominance of the cow, Victorieus, that held my gaze all the while. With height and power in abundance, you really could not look beyond her,” he commented. This was the fourth consecutive year that a Limmy duo had won the Burke Trophy, believed to set a new record in the modern era.

On the Sunday, the Show was rounded off in some style as the Interbreed Team of Five Championship was awarded to the tremendously strong, balanced and distinguished Limousin entry. The team comprised of: Limousin bull, Greenhill Viper; Newstart Tansy, Reserve Female Champion and member of the winning Team of Five at the 2005 Royal Show – both from Cormack McDowell Partnership, Sunnyside Farm, Billesdon, Leics; Fleethill Sal, the 2004 Royal Welsh Limousin Female Champion, later sold as Red Ladies Champion 2004 for 17,000gns, and brought forward by Paul Dawes, Kipperknowle Farm, Dinmore Manor, Hereford; and the outstanding full sisters Brockhurst Batik and Brockurst Bolshoi- the 2008 Royal Highland Champion, from D Mash, Torrington Farm, Chesham, Bucks.

Victorieus

November 2004 born, Victorieus is fully French bred and is by the sire Romeo and out of the dam, Paloma. The Crawford Brothers – Raymond & Stephen, together with father, Herbie – had first seen her at the Paris Show in 2007 where she won the senior heifer class. “Her sheer size and scope really pulled me in and I couldn’t get her out of my mind,“ commented Raymond. So the following February he did a deal with Sebastien Lagrafeuil of Le Maubert, Meilhards, France and brought her to the UK for her one and only show outing at this year’s Royal. She is in calf to one of the Lagrafeuil-Puech’s stock bulls and the Crawford Brothers may take her and Vigot to the Paris Show in 2009.

In the Burke Trophy she teamed up with Limousin bull and Reserve Male Champion, Vigot, again November 2004 born and just a day apart from Victorieus, and another from the Lagrafeuil stable. It was the first time that two animals from one single Limousin exhibitor as well as perhaps from one single breeder had taken Burke honours. Vigot was bought as a calf at the National Limousin Show in September 2005. Show successes thereafter have included Reserve Male at Balmoral in 2006, Junior Male Champion at the Highland in 2006 and Junior Interbreed Champion at the 2006 Great Yorkshire Show. Vigot – together with the Sauvignon – were the first Limousin bulls to have sexed semen collected. Vigot is by the Danish bred bull Hammel Luc and is out of the French dam, Rebecca.

Earlier on the Saturday, Victorieus had taken Individual Interbreed honours under the watchful gaze of judge Mr Steven Bailey, Upper Lightwood Green, Audlem, Crewe, Cheshire.

From the Limousin section sponsored by Banbury-based Smiths of Bloxham on the Thursday, Victorieus had emerged from a very good in-calf cow class, and after securing the female championship, she eventually went head to head with the Male Champion, the four-and-a-half-year-old bull Greenhill Viper from Cormack-McDowell Partnership, Sunnyside Farm, Tilton Lane, Billesdon, Leicestershire. With two outstanding animals in front of him, judge Mr Alistair Graham, Tandragee, Co Antrim, N Ireland deliberated before awarding the Supreme Championship to Victorieus.

The judge was full of praise for what he described as “an exceptional female, powerful, breedy about the head, a tremendous size and top right through to her tailhead and very clean through the middle.” He went on to emphasise the size and power that was paramount for the meat trade.

The Crawfords now own the distinction of having won the Grand Slam of major ‘Royals’ during their showing career. Championship titles have been secured at the Royal Ulster, Royal Highland, Royal Show, Royal Welsh, and in addition, the Royal Dublin. The 2008 Royal Show title was their second Championship at the Stoneleigh based show having first won it in 1999 with the bull Milbrook Lancelot who went on to be part of the first winning Burke Trophy team for the Limousin breed in that same year.

Standing Reserve Overall Champion in 2008 was the classy Female Reserve Champion, Brockhurst Batik, an April 2004 heifer from WJ & M Mash Ltd, Grove Lane, Chesham, Bucks. Fresh from winning this year’s Royal Highland Limousin Championship, where Doug Mash had completed the domestic Triple Crown of Royals, Brockhurst Batik is an embryo calf out of Ronick McAinsi and sired by Grahams Samson. Ronick McAinsi was purchased from the Stirling herd of R Dick for a maiden heifer record of 28,000gns at Carlisle in 1997 and subsequently was crowned Royal Show Champion in 2004. Grahams Samson, bred by R& J Graham, Strling, was sold to Penrith breeder Doug Edgar for a then world record 55,000gns in February 2003. These tremendous bloodlines had combined to produce the classy Brockhurst Batik who is in calf to Samy, the record three-time Royal Show Burke Trophy winner.

Millstone Calypso

Junior Female Champion and Junior Champion Overall was Millstone Calypso from Mr J Oakes, Stone Trough Farm, Holly Lane, Harrisahead, Stoke on Trent. April 2007 born and sired by Mas Du Clos, Calypso is out of the dam, Themis, who John Oakes purchased in Brittany and having three generations of high performance RRE in her back pedigree. This was Mr Oakes’ best showing at the Royal since his Royal Show Supreme in 2003 with Tunnelby Scallywag and he was also awarded the Bill Callion Trophy for the tidiest lines by judge Dorinda Dixon of the Roughley Herd. Millstone Calypso emerged from a strong heifer line-up to narrowly pip Dinmore Climrose from Paul Dawes, Dinmore Manor, Hereford who took the Reserve Junior Female title.

Junior Male Champion and Reserve Junior Overall was Brockhurst Columbus, a May 2007 born bull calf sired by Brockhurst Venture and out of Brockhurst Rouge again from Doug Mash. Standing Reserve Junior Male was Millington China exhibited by Mr J Weatherill, Millington Grange Estate, York. He boasts full French bloodlines with Neuf as sire and Nina on the dam line.
